James Barclay grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia and divided his time as a youth between the stage and the ice-hockey arena. When dreams of playing in the NHL didn't pan out, he took up golf and eventually became a professional in 1993. In 2000, he packed his bags and moved to Europe, where he shifted his focus to film-making and began to write, produce and direct his own work. He is a member of the Writers Guild of Denmark and the Danish Directors Union.

Was accepted into the CPGA (Canadian Professional Golfers Association)
in 1999, but decided not to pursue a career as a golf pro and moved to
Europe instead.
Formed Hemmingsen Entertainment Corporation with Danish actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau in 2007.
