This year's Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire wasn't exactly a monster hit, but it did manage to take in close to $555 million worldwide on a reported $135 million budget. Now, we have word that a sequel is officially in development, and Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have enlisted a writer to pen the script.
According to THR, Dave Callaham has signed on to write the untitled movie. No plot details have been disclosed, but it's assumed that both the King of the Monsters and the mighty Monarch of Skull Island will return to face a new, potentially world-ending threat.
Callaham has previously worked on several major studio tentpoles, including the 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot, Wonder Woman 1984, Marvel Studios' Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and Sony Pictures' Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. He also has some prior experience with Big G, having written the early drafts and received story by...

The Monsterverse will continue! THR reports that Dave Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) has been tapped to pen the sequel to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has proven to be a big success. The film is still in theaters, but it’s already grossed $548 million worldwide, making it one of the more profitable movies in the Monsterverse franchise, as it reportedly had a budget of just $135 million. Dave Callaham is no stranger to the Monsterverse, as he wrote the early drafts of the film that started the franchise: Godzilla.
Although the studio would like Godzilla x Kong director Adam Wingard to return for the sequel, there is no deal for him to do so. Wingard is set to direct Onslaught later this fall, which is said to be in the same vein as his previous cult classic movies, The Guest and You’re Next.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings screenwriter Dave Callaham is going from the Marvelverse to the Monsterverse.
The scribe, known for his action acumen, has been tapped to pen the next installment of Legendary’s Godzilla/Kong monster movie series.
The hiring comes in the wake of the box office success of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which has grossed close to $555 million worldwide. That is the biggest haul since 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, which peaked at $568 million. Empire, which is still in theaters, may also be one of the most profitable (if not the single most profitable) of the five movies in the series, as it only cost $135 million, per sources. Thus Legendary is keen to keep the monster juice flowing.

The Masters of the Universe toy and cartoon franchise got a live-action film adaptation back in 1987, with Dolph Lundgren taking on the role of lead hero He-Man, who defends the planet Eternia (and the rest of the universe) from evil forces, usually headed up by the villain Skeletor. To cut costs, the majority of the film is set on 1980s Earth, with He-Man and various other characters being transported from Eternia to Earth with the use of a “Cosmic Key.” Another live-action film adaptation of Masters of the Universe has been in development hell for a long time, but it looks like might finally escape into production, as Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Studios have announced that the movie will be receiving a theatrical release on June 5, 2026. Technically, summer in the northern hemisphere won’t begin until June 21st in 2026, but this is considered a summer release because summer starts early in the movie industry.

A new "Jurassic World" movie on the way, and it's happening in a hurry. Given that we only learned about the movie's existence several weeks ago, it's all pretty surprising. So, who will be shepherding this project through production? None other than Gareth Edwards.
We recently learned that the filmmaker behind franchise films such as 2014's "Godzilla" and "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" will occupy the director's chair. Here we go again. Another year is starting, which means it's time for the "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" movie to get yet another director. Like so many projects stuck in developing hell, it seems like practically every director currently working in Hollywood has, at some point, been involved in this film.
Now, Deadline reports that Travis Knight — the director of "Bumblebee" and "Kubo and the Two Strings," founder and CEO of Laika, and son of Nike co-founder Phil Knight — is the latest name to be attached to the long-in-development "Masters of the Universe" movie from Mattel. The report specifically says he is in "final negotiations" to direct, yet the deal hasn't closed just yet as other elements of the film are still being figured out. Gold House and Cape (Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment) debuted the fourth annual Gold List to guide voters during the awards race by honoring the most outstanding work in film by Asian Pacific creatives in the past year, as voted on by the community’s industry leaders. Notable winners this year include Past Lives (including Celine Song and Greta Lee), May December’s Charles Melton, Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, Olivia Rodrigo, The Boy and the Heron, and a historic number of Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander honorees.
Last year erased any doubt that films by and starring Asian Pacific creatives could achieve the pinnacles of commercial and critical success. According to Gold House’s research, 22% of films grossing over $100 million at the post-pandemic domestic box office featured an Asian Pacific director, screenwriter, or lead actor. 2023 Gold List winner Everything Everything All At Once broke records during the 2023 awards season...

Gold House and Cape (Coalition of Asian Pacifics) in Entertainment released the fourth annual Gold List, which spotlights outstanding work and talent within the Aapi community over the past 12 months.
“The Gold List was created to ensure awards seasons and mainstream society are up to date on the most worthy creative work — particularly work from communities that have been historically overlooked or excluded,” Jeremy Tran, executive director and chief operating officer of Gold House, said in a statement. “Every visible success leads to numerous unseen doors that are opened for new creative development, production, and distribution opportunities for these communities.”

In one of the odder twists of this awards season, the script that Ava DuVernay wrote for her film Origin has been deemed an adapted screenplay by the executive committee of the Academy’s writers branch, The Hollywood Reporter has learned, despite being classified as an original screenplay by the Writers Guild of America.
The moving drama, which premiered to acclaim at the Venice and Toronto international film festivals, was inspired by Isabel Wilkerson’s 2020 best-selling book Caste: The Origins of Our Discontent. Wilkerson, a Pulitzer Prize winner for her 2010 book The Warmth of Other Suns, is not featured at all in Caste, but is the beating heart and soul of Origin, as portrayed by Oscar nominee Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (King Richard). The book is about prejudice across vast swaths of history and geography, but the film, meanwhile, chronicles Wilkerson’s path to arriving at those connections.

As I tell my students, choices have consequences. Brilliantly, several choices made by Mikles Morales and his friends come back to bite them in the ass in the wonderful, if bloated, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Out now from Sony Home Entertainment, the 2:20 film is merely part one of a more sprawling saga that is entirely built around Miles (Shameik Moore) making a decision in the previous film that has multiversal implications.
In fact, his repercussions have such omniversal impact that Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac) has formed the Spider-Society with its core members traversing the multiverse to repair the damage (with a wonderful throwaway line about Doctor Strange).
Miles is blissfully unaware of this until another of his actions appears in the form of a new foe, the Spot (Jason Schwartzman), who is seen mastering his powers with growing confidence until he makes a mistake and enters himself and, therefore, the multiverse.

With the many, many, many versions of Spider-Man introduced in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, it says something that Spider-Punk emerged as a breakout character. However, the character wasn’t always part of the story and the producers had to fight to keep him in the movie once Daniel Kaluuya signed on.
Spider-Punk (Daniel Kaluuya), aka Hobie Brown, is part of the Spider-Society in Across the Spider-Verse, although he mostly plays by his own rules. He forms a bond with Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) and by the end of the film, the stage is set for Hobie to play a bigger role in the upcoming sequel. “He was in and out of the picture for a little while because we weren’t sure which elements we were going to stick in this part and which were going to migrate to the next movie,” Phil Lord told Entertainment Weekly. “When we met Daniel Kaluuya,...

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was recently released on Digital and fans quickly noticed many small changes from the version they recall seeing in theaters. While speaking with GamesRadar, Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller explained the reason behind the changes.
“There was an international version that was made almost two months before the movie came out because it had to be translated into different languages and these French censors have to decide what the rating of the movie is in Europe,” Christopher Miller explained. “The team at [Sony Pictures] Imageworks still had some shots that they felt they could do better for the finished version. So, they cleaned up and tweaked those things.“
Miller added that crew members would suggest other changes that made their way into the constantly shifting cut of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. “Certain crew members – people in the sound department or on the animation team – were like,...

While critics may not love them, audiences love the adventures of Sylvester Stallone’s Barney Ross, Jason Statham’s Lee Christmas, and the rest of the gang. The Expendables 4 (which is actually called Expend4bles) recently got it’s first full, official trailer (embedded above), which is pretty last minute considering the movie is set for a September 22, 2023 release date. Given how soon it’s coming out, we figured it’s time to try to assemble everything we know about the fourth movie in the Expendables series.
The Release Date
The fourth film, created and produced by Millennium Media and Campbell Grobman Films, as well as being distributed by Lionsgate, has been through quite a bit of development hell over the past decade. As previously stated, the last movie was released in 2014 with the sequel being released in 2012 and the original premiering back in 2010. Following this pattern, the fourth movie...

Skeletor must be in charge over at Netflix: The streamer is pulling the plug on Masters of the Universe, a planned live-action movie adaptation of the He-Man animated series and toy line, our sister site Variety reports. Toy maker Mattel is shopping the project to other studios.
The decision to scrap the film reportedly came down to “budget concerns,” with Netflix beginning with a production budget over $200 million and then trying unsuccessfully to pare that down to $150 million. Sources tell Variety that more than $30 million had already been spent on the project.

The Hollywood Critics Association has presented its midseason awards for the sixth time since 2018, giving Best Picture and Director to “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.” The big winner a year ago was eventual Oscar juggernaut “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Does that make them a new Oscar bellwether? Probably not, considering just how unique a phenomenon that movie proved to be. However, if this boost to “Spider-Verse’s” fledgling campaign results in the critically acclaimed animated film actually contending for the academy’s top award, studios may begin treating the Hca Midyears like a stop along the road to the Oscars and elevate their importance. And if it doesn’t, we may still see more overlap in the future if Oscar showings by spring releases “Eeaao,” “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Elvis” discourage winter backloading.

While The Flash may be struggling to find its footing at the box office, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is having no such issue. Sony’s animated sequel has now crossed $500 million at the worldwide box office, with $290.5 million domestically and $215.9 million internationally. Way to go, Spidey.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is also miles ahead of the first movie, which took in $384 worldwide, a number the sequel crossed in just 12 days. Across the Spider-Verse obviously still has legs at the box office, despite competition from Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Elemental, and The Flash.
Related Box Office Predictions: Can Spider-Man reclaim the top spot?
“When Miles Morales is unexpectedly approached by his best friend and love interest Gwen Stacy to complete a mission to save every universe of Spider-People from a mysterious new villain who could cause a catastrophic disaster, Miles is up for the challenge,” reads the official synopsis for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was filled to the brim with a variety of eclectic visual styles, so it says a lot that Spider-Punk was able to instantly catch the audience’s attention.
While speaking with Deadline, Spider-Verse writer-producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller reveal that we’ll be spending more time in Spider-Punk’s universe in Beyond the Spider-Verse.
Visiting Spider-Punk’s world is one of many crazy mixed media adventures that we’re going to have in [Beyond the Spider-Verse]. It’ll be a whole new feast for the eyes.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has been blocked from release in the United Arab Emirates after failing to pass local censorship laws, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The sequel to the 2018 Oscar-winning animated hit — which had a successful run in theaters in the region — was scheduled to debut June 22 across the territory ahead of the upcoming Eid al-Adha holiday. Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson from a script by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller and Dave Callaham, the film has apparently fallen foul of the country’s censorship laws due in part to the blink-and-you-miss-it protect trans lives poster featured in the background of one frame, according to a source familiar with the situation.
Regulators in the region have loosened censorship laws in recent years but there are still strict guidelines that international and local content must adhere to “local customs and values.” This is particularly the...

The official trailer for Expendables 4, written as Expend4bles – looks great in print, sounds weird if you say it as it’s spelled – shows Jason Statham and Megan Fox getting physical while the tagline declares: “Some relationships are built to last and some relationships are…Expendable.” The two-minute trailer then shows action fans a montage of select members of the ensemble cast, including Sylvester Stallone, Curtis 50 Cent Jackson, Dolph Lundgren, and Andy Garcia.
Directed by Scott Waugh, the fourth film of the action franchise also stars Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, Randy Couture, Jacob Scipio, and Levy Tran.
Kurt Wimmer, Tad Daggerhart, and Max Adams wrote the screenplay, based on characters created by David Callaham. Avi Lerner, Trevor Short, Boaz Davidson, Robert Van Norden, Jeffrey Greenstein, Jonathan Yunger, Spenser Cohen, Anna Halberg, and Stephen Paul executive produce.
