Disaster movies have been a staple of cinema for years – be they of the man made or natural variety – the latter of which are usually showcases for massively budgeted special effects that are oftentimes more the focus of the film than the people involved. On paper it would seem 13 Minutes is set to be more of the same. However this story, from co-writer and first-time director Lindsay Gossling, takes a different tack, approaching its story of a tornado hitting an unnamed town in Oklahoma from the human aspect – focussing on the townsfolk whose lives will be impacted in the titular 13 minutes it takes for people to get to safety before the tornado hits…...

I’m not entirely sure what the message is at the center of Lindsay Gossling’s 13 Minutes. In fact, I’m pretty sure there isn’t one. A line of text runs before the end credits stating how the film honors those who have been affected by extreme weather, but there’s no mention of climate change, what you can do to help, or anything beyond the reality that extreme weather and affected people exist. And that’s how it treats everything across the board. Because despite being a disaster film, Gossling also injects hot button issues like racism, abortion, immigration, disability, and homophobia into its fabric without saying anything of substance about them. She merely acknowledges their existence as something to deal with. A better title might be Both Sides: The Movie.

Disaster movies used to be fun. Back in the ’70s, they were filled with aging movie stars, many very much in need of a commercial hit, doing things like flying crippled planes, desperately attempting to rescue earthquake victims, swimming underwater in an upside-down ocean liner, and jumping off burning buildings.
Writer-director Lindsay Gossling’s 13 Minutes takes a different approach to the venerable genre. The film uses the familiar disaster movie template to concentrate on hot-button social issues, and boy, there are plenty of them. Before and after a monster tornado wreaks havoc on a small Oklahoma town, the characters ...

"Are you sure this is the safest place to be?" Quiver Distribution has debuted an official trailer for a tornado movie titled 13 Minutes, a thriller from filmmaker Lindsay Gossling. Four families in a Heartland town are tested when a massive storm hits, giving them just 13 minutes to get to shelter before the largest tornado on record ravages the town completely, leaving them searching for their loved ones and fighting for their lives. Understanding the storm's effect on communities is what drove first time feature director Lindsay Gossling and certified storm chaser Travis Farncombe to write the story. "The threat in this film comes from the sky but the story is grounded in the real world. Every creative element has been designed to drop the viewer directly into a time and place that feels authentic so that they can live the experience of the world imploding with the characters." The movie stars Trace Adkins,...

Could there be a more perfect moment than this? Sitting in the garden behind the Hotel Nacional, looking at the Cuban flag so proudly waving over the Straits of Florida and the Gulf of Mexico. The same site where the defense was built during the Cuban Missile Crisis, this moment of time marks a particularly precarious balance between peaceful coexistence and military aggression as we contemplate the recent death of Castro and election of Trump, wondering how it will play out in 2017.Hotel Nacional, Headquarters of Festival de Cine Nuevo Iberoamericano, Havana, Cuba
