Let me start this review with a warning: after watching Come Morning, it’s likely that you’ll never want to walk in the woods alone again. This film so vividly destroyed any notion I’ve ever had of a stroll through the forest being a peaceful, enjoyable experience that I want to hate it, but I simply can’t. The film is too memorable and too excellent for me to have any feelings of dislike toward it, despite the fact I’ll never again be able to enjoy nature without looking over my shoulder again.
Come Morning tells the story of D (Thor Wahlestedt) and his grandfather Frank (Michael Ray Davis) who accidentally shoot a trespassing neighbor while hunting deer. It isn’t as simple as calling the authorities and reporting an accident though, due to a long history of land disputes between the two families, so Frank and...

Ah, the moral dilemma of accidental murder. Add a bit of immaturity and grogginess to the recipe and you are probably onto something... The problem is when you force the uncertain uneasiness of border disputes to the mess, that things get suddenly -- well -- muddied. For better or worse, Come Morning focuses on a grandfather (Michael Ray Davis) who takes his grandson (Thor Wahlestedt) out on an ill-fated hunting expedition. The story revolves around the fact that they both aim and fire at a target in the brush that happens to not be a deer. They are both given excuses -- the grandfather's grogginess and the grandson's naivety -- but neither excuse completely pardons them from the guilt associated with their deeds. Of course their immediate response is: how do we cover this up?...

Film festivals exist to showcase the future talent in filmmaking and the Gasparilla International Film Festival (Giff) had plenty of talent on hand. The term filmmaking covers everyone from writers, directors, producers, to actors, actresses, and production folk. All the filmmakers that one meets at a film festival are invited to be there. They submitted their short and/or feature films and if selected by the board for screening at the festival, they are encouraged to be apart of the festivities. Or in Giff's case, four days of films and panels followed by kick-ass parties.
As I received the schedule and tried to attend as many of the events possible, I was able to meet a variety of filmmakers from all over. Most of them were kind enough to share their film and entertain my random interrogatories. Random, due to the lack of rest my mind received while covering the festival.
