Woot woot! My pick to win Best Director at the Oscars took home the Feature Film trophy at the recently concluded Directors Guild of America awards. And it's truly deserving! Cuaron defied gravity, yes pun intended, to create "Gravity," a movie grounded in sci-fi realism that many directors before him (including James Cameron) were saying that it would be hard to do. But Cuaron did it, and did it extremely well! So hats off to "Gravity" and Cuaron's direction!
Here's the complete list of winners of the DGA awards and right after the jump, check out my interview with Cuaron for "Gravity" that we conducted back in October. Oh, and take a look at my interview with the lovely Sandra Bullock as well.

Winner: Alfonso Cuaron ("Gravity")
Paul Greengrass ("Captain Phillips")
Steve McQueen ("12 Years a Slave")

Updated: Gravity does not seem to be falling on the awards circuit. Alfonso Cuarón walked away with the top honor at the Directors Guild of America Awards Saturday night in Los Angeles, beating out Martin Scorsese, David O. Russell, Paul Greengrass, and Steve McQueen.
“This is truly an honor and I am humbled by it,” Cuarón said to the audience of his peers after last year’s winner Ben Affleck presented him with the award. But Gravity was not the work of just one mind, and no one knows that more keenly than Cuarón. “Directing is about the work of your collaborators,...

Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul were upset in their respective acting categories, but Breaking Bad won the night’s top prize, taking home its first Emmy for Best Drama. It was an unpredictable night in several major categories: In addition to The Newsroom’s Jeff Daniels taking home the trophy for Best Actor in a Drama and Boardwalk Empire’s Bobby Cannavale winning for Supporting Actor, Veep’s Tony Hale and Nurse Jackie’s Merritt Wever were surprise winners — Wever was so shocked that she practically ran off the stage without delivering an acceptance speech.

It’s a big boost for the London-based maker of the song identification smartphone app. Shazam says the $40 million investment from Carlos Slim‘s America Movil will help accelerate its ongoing growth in music, continued expansion into television and new product development. The deal includes an agreement to pre-install Shazam on mobile phones sold in Latin America, Shazam Executive Chairman Andrew Fisher told Bloomberg. Shazam uses algorithms to analyze unique elements of music to help users identify the title and other information. An acoustic fingerprint is created based on a sample taken from the phone’s microphone and is compared against a central database for a match. If a match is found, the app identifies information such as the artist, song title, and album. Shazam has over 70 million monthly users, according to the company.

Shazam has entered into a strategic partnership with, and received an investment from, Mexican telecommunications company America Movil. Part of a conglomerate of companies owned by businessman Carlos Slim Helu, America Movil has put $40 million into Shazam that will aid its growth into advertising and television and help the audio recognition service expand in Latin America. This deal isn't just about the money, Shazam executive chairman Andrew Fisher tells Billboard. "The reality is we have a very strong balance sheet and we didn't necessarily need to do a fund raise. We've actually preserved a lot of the cash

Colour me in organizational skills, because fuck knows I need them.
I’ve had this album streaming from a super secret link for about a week now, and today I realise I’ve not actually reviewed it yet. On top of that I open my emails for the first time in the best part of a week to find my super-secret-stream is not so special anymore – the band have been streaming the album on Rock Sound since Monday. I am not a professional.
Anyhow, my own uselessness aside there’s an album to review.
colourmeinkindness is Basement’s second album. No mere sophomore effort though, colourmeinkindness is likely to be Basement’s swan song too – the band having announced an indefinite hiatus to follow the album’s touring duties this winter. Unfortunate news given that on this second album they appear to be really coming into their stride.
