PARIS -- Veteran journalist and television producer Patrick de Carolis has been elected head of pubcaster France Televisions, French broadcasting authority the Conseil superieur de l'Audiovisuel said Wednesday. Best known for hosting an award-winning cultural program on France 3, de Carolis will start his five-year term Aug. 22. He will preside over the France 2, France 3, France 4, France 5 and RFO channels, which make up the France TV stable. Other candidates for the coveted post included outgoing president Marc Tessier, who had been seeking a second five-year term, and producer Simone Halberstadt-Harari, chairman and CEO of the Tele Images group. Funded by a TV tax, France's public TV service faces strong competition from private broadcasters. De Coralis said that he would put in place an ambitious program to reinforce the group's image. This would include a change in editorial strategy, the use of new technologies and the modernization of relations between management and staff.
