George Albert Smith(1870-1951)
- Producer
His father and grandfather had both been counselors to LDS Church
Presidents. While being employed at the Federal Land Office he was
called to the Quorum Of The Twelve Apostles at age 33. Despite his
fragile health and impaired eyesight he had a distinguished career as a
church leader. He became the 8th president of the church on May 21,
1945. He organized the Church'es massive welfare assistance to Europe
after World War II. He also championed scouting among Latter Day
Saints. Through numerous other Civic and Church responsibilities,
President Smith lived that portion of that personal creed that
declared,"I would be a friend to the friendless and find joy in
ministering to the needs of the poor". After 6 years as Church
President he died due to complications from Lupus on his eighty-first
birthday. He was buried in the Smith Family Plot in the Salt Lake City
Cemetery.
