Hot off the success of last year’s box office record-setting smash The Mermaid, Stephen Chow brought us a sequel this Lunar New Year to his 2013 film Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons. While it set an opening day record in China, and was initially released in North America on roughly twice as many screens, it has thus far failed to match The Mermaid’s financial success. I have no idea why that is, anyone who claims to understand what makes the difference between a hit and a super-hit is a liar or a fool, but I can theorize that the film’s somewhat mixed critical response is a response to its weird hybrid nature. Not just in the ways Chow situates a sincere appreciation for religion within a goofy pop context, but in the film’s dual authorship between Chow, who co-wrote and produced, and Tsui Hark, who directed.

The latest film, Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons, from prolific filmmaker Stephen Chow serves as a (very loose and comedic) prequel to the 16th century classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. Told in a highly comedic Kung Fu style, Journey to the West embraces religious beliefs in one man’s quest to rid the world of demons and their evil influences. A mighty tall order for anyone, especially this meek, yet eager, young man Xuan Zang (Wen Zhang) whose unkempt, dusty hair is extremely distracting.

Frequently adapted for the big screen, the latest version of Journey to the West quickly became one of the highest grossing films in China's box office history. That's not surprising, really, given the recent penchant for black comedy in cinema, combined with a classic tale, and the legendary Stephen Chow at the helm. How could it fail? The film is a prequel of sorts and follows do-gooder demon hunter Tang Sanzang (Wen Zhang) as he tries and fails to lull the evil out of the demons via a Buddha nursery rhyme book. Enter Bai Gu Jing (Shu Qi, in one of her best roles), a rough-and-ready but tired demon hunter who helps him out more times than one. Happenstance leads to her falling for him,...

Gone With The Bullets, Jiang Wen's spiritual sequel to his monster hit Let The Bullets Fly, will arrive in cinemas across mainland China in 3D on 18 December, according to a newly released teaser trailer. Back in 2010, Let The Bullets Fly broke box office records in China, proving that director-star Jiang Wen had widespread mainstream appeal, in addition to critical acclaim. While this follow-up is not a precise sequel, it is being made very much in the same spirit of the earlier film, reuniting Jiang with co-star Ge You, who will be joined by Shu Qi, Wang Zhiwen, Wen Zhang and Zhou Yun in the 1920s-set comedy actioner, reported to revolve around a beauty pageant. With filming recently completed, a first teaser trailer has been unveiled,...

Having followed up his giddy 2004 martial arts comedy Kung Fu Hustle with 2008's risible E.T.–inspired dud CJ7, director Stephen Chow returns to more familiar terrain with Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons, a Buddhist fantasy adventure that unevenly hybridizes hectic combat, sappy romance, and slapstick humor.
In an ancient China of magic and monsters, Xuan Zhang (Wen Zhang) fights giant animalistic demons by bringing out their goodness via songs from a book of 300 nursery rhymes. This makes him a laughingstock among his peers save for Duan (Shu Qi), a badass beauty who immediately falls for Xuan Zhang because of his inherent goodness.

If you couldn’t tell from the title of today’s report from Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, the theme of Day Three for me could be boiled down into one word: subtitles. And if it wasn’t for one of the five films I watched today–not counting Cheap Thrills, which has its own, fuller review elsewhere in the section–the theme could’ve been Asian cinema. But alas, it was not to be. Stupid Borgman. (More on that in a bit.) Though there were fewer miracles to be had today, there was a bit of liquor imbibed, specifically a tequila-infused chocolate milkshake, which tastes as delightful as it sounds. Just like Day Two, as I sit to compose this report, I’m amazed that 15 hours ago, I was on my way to the Alamo Drafthouse Lakeline. In spite of staying either inside the theater or directly outside of it for the duration,...

With Chinese period epics still continuing to fill cinemas, it’s no surprise that old school Shaw Brothers favourites are increasingly being brought back to screens, 1975 classic “The Flying Guillotine” now reappearing as “The Guillotines”. Derek Kwok and Stephen Chow’s “Journey to the West” (also called “Odyssey”) is destined to wreck Hong Kong theaters next month on Chinese New Year, and it’s anybody’s guess when it’ll finally cross the ocean to our part of the world. I’m guessing late 2013, or if we’re really lucky, mid-Summer, but that’s a bit overly optimistic with these imports. Until the film does manage to find its way Stateside, though, check out a new English-subtitled trailer for the film, which is, yes, just as wacky as you thought it would be given that this is a Stephen Chow movie. Well, partially a Stephen Chow movie, anyway, though I expect he had the more dominant input into the film than his comrade Derek Kwok. Starring Huang Bo, Shu Qi, Wen Zhang, Show Luo, and Chrissie Chau. You’ll notice the absence of Chow’s name in the starring credits.

Yep, you read the headline correctly. In the upcoming Chinese drama Ocean Heaven (海洋天堂), action star Jet Li will perform no martial arts whatsoever. On the contrary, Li took a pay-cut to his usual high salary for a rare opportunity to stretch his acting chops as a terminally ill father seeking the means to ensure the well-being of his autistic adolescent son. The heartwarming film marks the directorial debut of Xue Xiaolu, the co-scriptwriter of Chen Kaige's Together, a drama similar in the father & son theme. Here's the official synopsis:

David (Wen Zhang) is one of them: he looks absent-minded, repeats other peoples words, swims with amazing ease, keeps everything at home in exact order and maybe he is not totally aware of his mothers death some years ago.
