Shout! Studios presents The Magic Flute by Florian Zigl, executive produced by Roland Emmerich, at 325 theaters with expansion likely. A reimagining of the Mozart opera, it follows a present-day teen sent from London to the Austrian Alps on singing scholarship at the legendary Mozart boarding school. There, he discovers a century old forgotten passageway into the magical world of Mozart’s famed opera.
This Harry Potter-ish adventure fantasy stars Jack Wolfe as Tim Walker, who passes from school into the world of the opera and its many adventures as hero Prince Tamino. Wide releases may be picking up steam and Scream, but in terms of new specialty, and family fare, these isn’t much new competition this weekend.
Melissa Boag, EVP of Family Entertainment at Shout! Studios, hopes it will play with fans of magical adventure, Harry Potter, and classical music. Wolfe is a star of Netflix YA series Shadow & Bone.

With over 25 years of experience working in Hollywood as a stunt performer and action actor, Sonny’s career has led him to reinvigorating the action genre in the Philippines as an action director and producer with a focus of bringing international productions to film in the country. Without any formal film school training, Lopez dropped out of college early when he realized that his true calling was in the entertainment industry, behind the curtains particularly in dark editing rooms where he started. He went on to pursue a career in broadcasting in local Philippine TV networks and in the advertising industry as a self-taught video editor. Then, he went on to teach himself visual effects and motion design until finally moving on to visual effects as a VFX supervisor. Eventually, he became an accomplished and award-winning music video director and TV commercial director – sought-after for his attention to detail and technical creative vision as well as his extensive expertise in post-production and visual effects.

The theme of the female vigilante with the additional value of the protagonist being a very beautiful woman not previously associated in any way with the action genre, has been working quite well recently for the Philippino film industry. In that fashion, after Richard Somes‘s “We Will Not Die Tonight” with Erich Gonzalez came Erik Matti’s “BuyBust” with Anne Curtis and now was the time for the latter’s co-protagonist in “No Other Woman”, Cristine Reyes, to play Pedring Lopez’s “Maria”.
The rather generic story involves a former BlackRose cartel assassin named Lily, who, after refusing to complete her last mission, has escaped and managed to evade the grasp of the syndicate, even forming her own family. Some years later, and as the power struggles in the organization, between Kaleb and Victor, the two number 2s in the hierarchy, rise over the assassination of an influential politician,...

Jose Javier Reyes' Working Girls is a disappointment. Just like the counterfeit bags one of Reyes' characters peddles to her internet clients, the film hardly matches the 1984 Ishmael Bernal satire with the same title that it supposedly updates. Even if independently assessed of Bernal's acclaimed urban comedy, Working Girls is still an unforgivably incoherent, annoyingly shallow, and ultimately pointless exercise. In an interview, Reyes admits that this film was made as a sort of tribute to Bernal and Amado Lacuesta, screenwriter of the 1984 comedy. Given Reyes' intentions for writing and directing this update of Bernal's classic, I can only conclude that this films' biggest achievement is that it will inevitably raise awareness of the existence of Bernal's film, and hopefully gain for it more followers.
Perhaps my displeasure for Reyes' film is a tad exaggerated. Reyes, I admit, is a very smart and able writer whose gift for gab...

Carlo Caparas‘ Ang Panday, a special effects-laden fantasy-adventure starring actor-politician Bong Revilla, remains the biggest box-office hit at the 35th Metro Manila Film Festival up to Jan. 2, according to a Manila Bulletin report. Ang Panday has earned P80.8 million (Us$1.75m) since Dec. 25. The runners-up are the vampire comedy Ang Darling Kong Aswang, starring Vic Sotto and Cristine Reyes as a sort of female Robert Pattinson, with P76m (Us$1.65m), and Laurice Guillen’s romantic melodrama I Love You Goodbye, starring Derek Ramsay, Gabby Concepcion, and Angelica Panganiban, with P69.8m (Us$1.51m). Of the festival’s seven films, the one box-office disaster has been boxer Manny Pacquiao’s fantasy flick Wapakman, which has grossed a paltry P2 million (Us$43,000). Throughout the two-week Metro Manila Film Festival, [...]...

Tony Y. Reyes‘ Ang Darling Kong Aswang, starring comedian Vic Sotto, is the 2009 Metro Manila Film Festival’s #2 hit. Apparently Filipinos, like movie audiences elsewhere, have been craving for stories featuring vampires. But unlike the worldwide megahits Twilight and The Twilight Saga: New Moon, in which the vampire is a sexy male (Robert Pattinson), in Ang Darling Kong Aswang the undead is a sexy woman, Christine Reyes. Ang Panday has been this year’s top film. At the other extreme, boxer-turned-actor Manny Pacquiao’s vehicle Wapakman has thus far come in last at the box office. Also of interest, Philippine News offers the Metro Manila festival’s criteria for the Best Picture award: "artistry, creativity and technical excellence, [...]...

Filipino director Yam Laranas did such a bang-up good job with his 2004 horror movie “Sigaw”, that he repeated the process on 2008’s “The Echo”, an English-language remake of “Sigaw” that went straight to DVD. Laranas is back with a new horror movie called “Patient X”, which has the makings of an effective “last stand in a haunted house” type, which is always something I’m down for. Trailer and poster for the movie via Bloody-Disgusting below. Here’s the not-all-that-coherent plot synopsis for “Patient X”: After twenty years, local police captures the murderer of the older brother of a young boy. Now a doctor, he must go back to his old town and face the murderers himself. He then discovers that the murderers are Aswangs (folkloric Filipino vampire-like creatures) and they pose a deadly threat not only to him but also for the entire town. Starring Richard Gutierrez, Cristine Reyes,...
