Sam Bahadur Movie Review Out! (Picture Credit: IMDb)
What’s Good: Vicky Kaushal’s attempt at bringing one of the most biopic-worthy characters in Sam Manekshaw on screen
What’s Bad: The collective work of the team to narrate a story in the most confusing and vaguely uninteresting way
Loo Break: Quite a few times!
Watch or Not?: Only and only if you can sit through 150 minutes of a film to watch how well the lead acts
Language: Hindi
Available On: Theatrical release
Runtime: 2 hours 30 minutes

Vicky Kaushal is back in the Indian Army uniform. This time, it’s a biopic of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, also known as Sam Bahadur. The film’s teaser, released on Friday, shows Vicky transform into India’s first field marshal.
Vicky looks quite like Sam Bahadur in his 1960s-70s days, his demeanour and the setting of the film carry a strong Uri hangover. Vicky, as Sam, is seen giving a pep talk to his fellow army men, almost making us believe that he’d soon breaking into “How’s the Josh,” his popular line from Aditya Dhar’s film.
His powerful dialogues “A soldier’s uniform is more valuable to him than his life,” he tells his troops, rallying them into battle against the nation’s enemies. We also meet Fatima Sana Shaikh as former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who tells Manekshaw that the duty of a...

Over the years, the definition of a man has changed its course, and with time the represention of the modern man has also changed in Indian Cinema. Gone are the times when men were just macho heroes rescuing women. This is the era of vulnerable, compassionate and sensitive men. Men who can cry, who are not shy about seeking help when they need it and acknowledging the worth of the women in their lives. Men who can express their feelings and not hide them.
Many Bollywood male characters written by women have played a big role in breaking the mould of a stereotypical hero.
This change has been a product of increasing number of female writers. Women writers have actually played a big role in breaking the stereotypes around masculinity, by creating male characters who are sensitive, understanding and would cheer for women.

One can be the biggest mastermind of them all when it comes to committing a crime, however there are those little clues that would entrap you eventually. It could be a pen, a lip balm or perhaps, just a footprint; eventually there would be something small out there that would lead to something big.
However, how do you entrap a criminal who commits a crime, forgets all about it and then walks into the room in plain sight?
Well, this is what makes Breathe: Into the Shadows super exciting as there is a character within a character, layer within a layer, and story within a story at play here. What you see may actually seem true, but how do you tackle a situation when there is something explosive, something truly dramatic waiting to be unveiled?
It is this very unveiling that comes to the mid-point of this Mayank Sharma directed...

Breathe 2: Into The Shadows (Amazon Prime Video)
Starring Abbhishek Bachchan, Nithya Menon, Amit Sadh, Saiyami Kher
Directed by Mayank Sharma
In Mani Ratnam’s Raavan Abhishek Bachchan played Raavan. In Breathe 2, Raavan plays Abhishek. There are mindgames based on the expression of each one of Raavan’s ten heads, manoeuvring Abhishek’s character through a series of clumsy capital crimes . So mindless are these mindgames that one is grateful Raavan had only 10 heads. If there were more, this series may have extended itself into some more episodes. And Breathe would have killed us all with the sheer lack of breathing space in the plot.
This is not to say that the storytelling is taut. Not at all! Loose-limbed and shaggy to the point of seeming lazy, the indolent tone of narration would have been excusable were it not so ridiculously self-important. It is hard to believe that it took four writers(Bhavani Iyer,...

Ronnie Screwvala and Meghna Gulzar have found the perfect actor for their upcoming biopic on Sam Manekshaw. It is Vicky Kaushal who has been cast to play the legendary army man.
“Sam Manekshaw’s name will be etched in history as one of the greatest soldiers and minds India has ever seen. Young India desperately needs role models to look up to, needs to be educated on the contribution made by this icon to India — as we know it today. I could not have asked for a better storyteller than Meghna to collaborate with on this one and will be a treat to do this with Vicky again,” says Ronnie Screwvala.

Kashmir and its blood-soaked political history renders itself well to cinematic treatment. It is to the credit of the makers of this series that not a moment of the eight episodes feels exploitative or artificial.
There is a free flow to the narrative and the main characters are written into the plot organically. Both Mohit Raina and Dia Mirza do well in their respective roles of the Kashmir-based lawyer-journalist searching for truth that may destroy his life, and the mysterious woman from Pakistan who has drifted into India and has been languishing in prison for years with no hope of being released.
That's where the lawyer's dormant skills kicks in.
"Kaafir" is a series with plenty of heart. Writer Bhavani Iyer has researched her subject of Kashmiri militancy. The series never lets the weight of its political theme sit heavily on the narration. If anything, the series is guilty of...
