“There are no cheap parlor tricks here!” growls Locke (Armando Gutierrez), the cloak-swirling, goatee-twitching villain of Blake Harris and Chris Bouchard’s “The Little Mermaid,” providing such an easy way in for the disgruntled reviewer (and few will be gruntled) that it almost feels like a trap. Creaky visual effects, slapdash plotting and a script drunk on cliché: There’s pretty much nothing but cheap parlor trickery here.
The biggest trick of all, of course, is that though it feels like it was designed to capitalize on the confusion, this is neither the forthcoming Lin-Manuel Miranda-assisted Disney remake, nor Universal’s similarly titled, status-unknown project that formerly had Sofia Coppola and Chloë Grace Moretz attached. Nor does it bear much resemblance to the 1989 animated musical, or to the Hans Christian Andersen story that purportedly inspired all of the above. Sara (Agnes Bruckner) is a smart law student relying on a scholarship and a bartending gig to get herself through school. Her obvious crush on Eric (Shawn Ashmore) is her biggest downfall, since he’s dating privileged student Brooke (Shanna Collins). When Eric and Brooke grab drinks from Sara at the bar, Brooke sees Sara pilfer a couple bucks from the tip jar (or so it would appear, what exactly she does from grabbing Brooke’s money to opening the cash register is obscurely shown, at best). She tattles to Brooke’s manager, getting her fired, and reports her to her aunt who’s on the college board, getting her scholarship revoked and getting her kicked out of school housing.

Chicago – HBO’s under-appreciated original movie recalls the moment when entertainment-seeking Americans averted their eyes from actors to their neighbors over the fence. Voyeurism had a new name, “cinema verite,” and one-time producer Craig Gilbert was determined to take it from art houses to small screens in homes across the country.
His target was the Loud family—a large and popular clan headed by the philandering Phil and the strong-willed Pat. Their son Lance was openly gay and his flamboyant exuberance was celebrated within the walls of his home but proved to alarm conservative viewers once it was broadcast on TV. The show resulted in the dissolution of Pat and Bill’s marriage, which was already ailing but wasn’t at all aided by Gilbert’s manipulative strategies to intensify their domestic conflict.
Blu-ray Rating: 3.5/5.0
The enormous timeliness of the subject matter makes “Cinema Verite” a fitting entry in HBO’s ever-impressive filmography.

A couple find a Db in a fountain. Alexis (Molly Quinn) and Castle (Nathan Fillion) help Martha (Susan Sullivan) rehearse for a part in a play. Alexis comments Martha would leave them if she landed the lead and went on tour. Martha says Alexis would be sad but Castle would be happy. Castle leaves when he gets a call, "death, murder mayhem" is almost becoming his catchphrase. Alexis wants him to take her with him but he tells her to find her own "space to hide." Ryan (Seamus Dever) can't find the Db's shoes and her purse is missing. Lanie (Tamala Jones) finds she was stabbed in the back. Castle posits she was a model, underweight, etc. She was a model for New York fashion week and she'd been to a club. Castle saying they descend here like locusts, only "locusts eat." She was modelling for Teddy Farrow (Julian sands) and her dress is missing.

Remember Haley Joel Osment, the adorable/creepy kid from The Sixth Sense and Pay It Forward? He’s making a comeback in Sassy Pants and trying his darndest to make a new impression on a public that hasn’t seen him in a feature film since 2003 when he starred Secondhand Lions.
In the new independent comedy, he plays Chip, a young, hard-partying gay man who forms a relationship with his much older boyfriend’s naïve daughter. The bold career move reminds me of Macaulay Culkin, another former child star who tried to make the difficult transition into adult stardom by reemerging in edgy projects like Party Monster and the religious comedy Saved!. While it didn’t exactly work for Culkin, hopefully Osment’s makes a much more successful re-introduction on Jan. 28, the day when Sassy Pants premieres at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

[1] These days, reality television may be considered by some to be a blight on our cultural landscape, but there was a time when it offered a more honest counterpoint to the idealized families being portrayed on American sitcoms. Back in the early '70s, filmmaker Craig Gilbert conceived of a documentary series about a California household as a response to shows like The Brady Bunch. The show, "An American Family," was considered groundbreaking at the time, and is now thought of as one of the earliest examples of reality television. HBO Films' Cinema Verite, directed by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini (American Splendor), tells the story of the making of "An American Family." James Gandolfini stars as Gilbert, while Diane Lane and Tim Robbins play the parents of the Loud family. We've featured spots for the movie here [2] before [3], and a new trailer has just been released. Check it out after the jump.

Long before The Real World, Survivor or Jersey Shore, producer Craig Gilbert created An American Family. The PBS documentary special that aired in 1973 was unlike anything ever put on television. It chronicled the real life, daily struggles of the Louds, a seemingly perfect California family who were not only catapulted to fame by the film, but helped usher in a whole new genre: reality television. Cinema Verite is an HBO Original Film that tells the behind the scenes story of this groundbreaking piece of popular culture, starring James Gandolfini [1] as producer Craig Gilbert along with Diane Lane and Tim Robbins and Mrs. and Mrs. Loud, the main subjects of the film. Directed by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini (American Splendor), Cinema Verite premieres on HBO April 23. We recently highlighted [2] a first glimpse at the film but you can check out the full trailer after the jump. Here's a brief...

Way before Kim Kardashian and her family make the definition of reality TV blurry, America has tried out the approach on an ordinary family in early 1970s. HBO drops the first trailer to "Cinema Verite", a TV movie which tells the behind-the-scenes story of the groundbreaking documentary "An American Family".
It chronicles the lives of the Louds and catapulted the Santa Barbara family to notoriety while creating a new television genre: the reality TV series. It put the Louds in the spotlight as the parents (Diane Lane, Tim Robbins) struggled with their marriage while raising their children. In particular, Pat was criticized for her support of her openly gay son Lance (Thomas Dekker) at a time when homosexuality was rarely represented on television.

HBO has released the first trailer for its upcoming original movie Cinema Verite, and to describe it requires some thorny meta untangling: It’s a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the groundbreaking 1973 PBS documentary series An American Family, which chronicled the painful dissolution of a family in Santa Barbara, California. The series by Oscar-winning doc filmmakers Alan and Susan Raymond centered on couple Pat Loud (Diane Lane) and Bill Loud (Tim Robbins), who split up during the filming, and their children, the eldest of whom, son Lance, became TV’s first openly gay character.
Cinema Verite stars Diane Lane and Tim Robbins as Pat and Bill, Thomas Dekker as son Lance, and James Gandolfini as producer Craig Gilbert. It was directed by husband and wife team Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini (American Splendor, Wanderlust), and written by David Seltzer (1976′s The Omen).

[1] Reality stars are a dime a dozen these days, but HBO Films' Cinema Verite takes us back to a time when that wasn't the case. The film dramatizes the behind-the-scenes action surrounding PBS' 1973 documentary series An American Family, which HBO's marketing team is referring to the first reality show. This week's Greek season finale finally let Calvin and Grant get together, setting them up for a romance next season. More importantly, however, we also got some more of the odd friendship between Calvin and the born-again, purity-pledged Dale.

This week we got back to Calvin's (Paul James) attempts to resist his attraction to his Omega Chi roommate, Grant (Gregory Michael). Calvin's still avoiding Grant by sleeping on Rusty and Dale's floor and Dale is getting tired of the situation.
Since Dale has also been trying to resist Sheila's (Update: sorry, apparently it's Kristen O'Meara not Miriam Shor, aka Janet from Swingtown as I thought) attempts at seducing Dale...

Though the CBS 1970's series didn't maintain a very large audience, the viewers Swingtown did attract are very devoted. Many people have expressed great disappointment over the cancellation of the series after only one short season of 13 episodes. One particular group of people however couldn't be happier about Swingtown's demise and wants to take credit for it.
Set in the Summer of 1976, Swingtown follows the changing lives of three families in suburban Chicago. The show stars Molly Parker, Jack Davenport, Grant Show, Lana Parrilla, Josh Hopkins, Miriam Shor, Shanna Collins, Aaron Christian Howles, Brittany Robertson, Michael Rady, Nick Benson, and Kate Norby.
Critical and viewer reception for Swingtown was mixed and the pilot debuted to fewer than 8.6 million viewers and a 2.5/7 rating/share in the 18-49 demographic. The ratings for subsequent episodes dropped from there and CBS eventually shifted the series to a little-watched Saturday night timeslot.

This past Halloween saw the release of a tweener horror movie so damned determined to scare the crap out its audience even the simple sound generated by mail being slipped through the slot of the front door was transformed into a loud crashing noise designed to startle viewers out of their seats. This March on DVD you'll get a second chance to see if your non-tweener heart can withstand the blood-curdling terror of The Haunting of Molly Hartley (review).
The Haunting of Molly Hartley stars relative newcomer Haley Bennett as a young woman at a new private school with a dark past who finds herself increasingly haunted by strange hallucinations, voices, and nose bleeds as her 18th birthday rapidly approaches. Is it that wicked tumor inside her sinus cavity causing her psychosis or are there truly wicked forces at work? CW Network all-stars Chace Crawford and AnnaLyne McCord co-star in...

The Haunting of Molly Hartley isn't bad as far as movie titles go, though it would be a lot better if the movie contained any actual haunting. The girl is plagued by voices that say "Molly!" and "I know what you are!," but is that really a "haunting"? It's more like The Annoying of Molly Hartley or The Messing Around with Molly Hartley's Mind.
At any rate, this lame, tame psychological thriller stars Haley Bennett as Molly, who has just moved with her father (Jake Weber) to a new house and new school after an unsettling incident in which Molly's mother tried to kill her. (Oops!) Mom (Marin Hinkle) is now in the loony bin, which at least reduces the awkwardness around the house, but Molly fears she might be starting to suffer from the same craziness that made her mother go all stabby.

As part of a bumper crop of Halloween theatrical releases, two movies dealing with young people have arrived—one that explores and elicits anxieties over out-of-control teenagers, and one aimed directly and simplistically at the mindset of that age. Guess which one is better? And guess which one is getting the wider break?
Eden Lake, the directorial debut of My Little Eye scripter James Watkins, is slinking into very token theatrical release like a beaten child—in the New York area, its sole venue is somewhere in Queens—prior to its wider DVD exposure in January. Like so many films granted such negligible big-screen treatment, it deserves better. In the film, it’s the children who deliver the beatings, as writer/helmer Watkins presents a scenario ripped from British headlines about violent youth sometimes referred to as “chavs,” junior hooligans who have no respect for authority or compunctions about reacting...

The players: Director: Mickey Liddell, Writers: Rebecca Sonnenshine, John Travis, Cast: Haley Bennett, Jake Weber, Chace Crawford, Shanna Collins, Shannon Marie Woodward
Facts of interest: None whatsoever.
The plot: Ever since her mother tried to kill her, Molly Hartley has been hearing voices and seeing weird things. Now she's about to discover a devilish secret her parents have kept from her for years.
Our thoughts: Mickey Liddell’s directorial debut “The Haunting of Molly Hartley” is an ugly mess. And honestly, that’s pretty much all there is to say about it. For the sake of offering you more than two sentences though, let me further explain why this amateurish horror thriller is a massive failure.

Cable channel Bravo has purchased the exclusive rights to air CBS' summer drama, Swingtown. Does this mean there will be a second season?
Swingtown debuted on Thursday, June 5, 2008 on CBS. The series was executive produced by show creator Mike Kelley and Jericho's Carol Barbee. Set in the summer of 1976, Swingtown follows three families as they explore new freedoms and shifting moral values in Chicago suburbia. The series stars veterans of cancelled shows like Molly Parker (Six Feet Under), Grant Show (Melrose Place), Lana Parrilla (Spin City), Josh Hopkins (Pepper Dennis), Miriam Shor (Big Day), and Shanna Collins (Wildfire).
CBS' President of Entertainment, Nina Tassler, gave the drama a greenlight in May 2007 after HBO had passed on the project. It was expected to air during the regular 2007-08 season but CBS decided to delay the series until Summer, typically a time used to burn off less desirable programming. Critical and...

"Swingtown" is swinging to Bravo, which has acquired exclusive cable rerun rights to the CBS drama from CBS Television Distribution.
Bravo has picked up all 13 produced episodes, which aired over the summer to modest ratings. CBS has not made a final decision about the future of "Swingtown," but a second-season pickup is considered a very long shot.
"Swingtown" producer CBS Par TV had also been shopping the drama about partner-swapping couples in 1970s suburbia to cable, but a Bravo source said the deal is a straight acquisition and that the network has no plans to produce new episodes. The off-network sale essentially closes the door on the show continuing with originals on CBS or another network.
Bravo is scheduled to premiere "Swingtown" in the fall, joining an off-net lineup that includes "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" and "The West Wing."
"Swingtown" is executive produced by creator Mike Kelley, Alan Poul and Carol Barbee.
