Composer Joseph Shirley has experienced a lot of success over the last couple of years, including writing the scores for Star Wars shows “The Book of Boba Fett” and Season 3 of “The Mandalorian.” But composing music for “Creed III” was a “full circle moment,” Shirley tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview because he had worked alongside composer Ludwig Goransson on the first two “Creed” films as an assistant.
“What we wanted to do with ‘Creed III’ was to build out its texture and flavor and sound in the score that, at times, maybe is self-referential to other ‘Creed’ movies but still takes a step forward in pushing that that ‘Creed’ sound along,” Shirley says.
The third film in the blockbuster “Rocky” franchise included many firsts beyond just Shirley’s ascendance to the title of composer. “Creed III” marked the directorial debut of star Michael B. Jordan and is...

Exclusive: Creed III producer Irwin Winkler said Saturday at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles event that Creed IV is in the works, with franchise star and Creed III director Michael B. Jordan to helm it.
“We are planning to do Creed IV right now,” Winkler said onstage during a panel for Creed III, the MGM Amazon Studios pic that bowed in March and grossed more than $275 million at the worldwide box office. “We have a really good story [and] a really good plot. We got a little delayed because of the strikes, but about a year from now we’re going into pre-production.”
Winkler also confirmed that Jordan would be returning to direct after his feature helming debut on Creed III. “He will be,” Winkler said. “He did such a great job — he was comfortable with the camera.”

What does it take to create the sounds of a boxing champ? Turns out it requires a mighty force of trumpets, heavy percussion, and the fear of trying not to disappoint legendary music producer Dr. Dre, said Creed III composer Joseph Shirley, who joined Deadline’s Sound & Screen live music event to discuss the film.
Given that Creed III sees its leading man, Michael B. Jordan’s Adonis Creed, try to make a home for himself and his family in Los Angeles, it only makes sense that West Coast rap icon Dr. Dre would not only be influential to the movie score but also be recruited as the film’s musical consultant.
“One of the tricks of this score was how do we incorporate [hip-hop] songs to blend it into the landscape of the score,” Shirley said about his attribution to the Death Row Records co-founder. “The way that the movie opens,...

Deadline’s Sound & Screen, our awards-season composer showcase of original music for some of this year’s most acclaimed films, gets underway tonight at UCLA’s Royce Hall, with a 60-piece orchestra tuning up to make it all sing.
The event for industry voters begins with a pre-reception at 5:30 p.m. Pt, with performances starting at 6:45 p.m. Follow along on social media all evening on Deadline’s social channels via #DeadlineSoundAndScreen, and stay with Deadline for full panel coverage.

Three months from now, the Weeknd might just have an Emmy to place alongside his four Grammys and his Oscar nomination.
That’s because he joins a dozen other music superstars — including Dolly Parton, Common, Ryan Tedder, “Weird Al” Yankovic and Meshell Ndegeocello — who have entered work in this year’s Emmy competition.
Voting began yesterday in the seven music categories. Approximately 550 members of the Academy’s music branch will cast ballots, although viewing the hundreds of entries before voting ends on June 26 is an impossible task, Academy officials privately concede.
The Weeknd, aka Abel Tesfaye, is among the 19 entries in the Music Direction category. He submitted “The Weeknd Live at Sofi Stadium,” an HBO special that aired in February. If nominated, he’s likely to be up against such past winners as Adam Blackstone and Rickey Minor (“The Oscars”).

Music has always been an integral part of the “Star Wars” universe, dating back to the John Williams scores for the original movie trilogy. So will Emmy voters recognize one, two or all three of the recent “Star Wars” TV series in the scoring categories?
Vying for consideration: the 12-part “Andor,” with music by Emmy-winning, Oscar-nominated Nicholas Britell (“Succession”); the six-part “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” with a new theme by Williams and score by English composer Natalie Holt (“Loki”); and the eight-part third season of “The Mandalorian,” with music by Joseph Shirley. All aired on Disney+.
Britell spent more than two years on “Andor,” the backstory of “Rogue One” hero Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), including several months creating music that was played on the set during filming – from the Time Grappler’s hammer-banging signals on Ferrix to the alien electronica in the clubs on Morlana and the amateur funeral band playing a...

Michael B. Jordan‘s first foray into directing with “Creed III” has done quite well at the box office, and been generally enjoyed by critics and fans alike. Maybe it’s too early to consider its awards potential, but maybe not, because there seems to be more room for movies like “Creed III” now than when Jordan first played the title role in Ryan Coogler‘s “Creed” back in 2015.
What’s particularly interesting about that initial release is that it did get Sylvester Stallone nominated for his third Oscar, nearly 40 years after his first two Oscar noms for writing and starring in the original “Rocky” (1976). That iconic boxing drama led to a full-on franchise that was more about box office than awards, but “Creed” came at a time when people started taking Coogler more and more seriously following his acclaimed debut feature “Fruitvale Station.”

Plot: The journeys of the Mandalorian through the Star Wars galaxy continue. Once a lone bounty hunter, Din Djarin has reunited with Grogu. Meanwhile, the New Republic struggles to lead the galaxy away from its dark history. The Mandalorian will cross paths with old allies and make new enemies as he and Grogu continue their journey together.
Review: It has been over two years since The Mandalorian last aired on Disney+. While The Book of Boba Fett featured the reunion of Din Djarin and Grogu early in 2021, it has felt twice as long since we have heard Ludwig Goransson’s theme music or followed the adventures of Mando and The Child. The wait is finally over, as Disney+ debuted the premiere of the third season today for audiences worldwide. While the first episode keeps the action somewhat mellow, I have seen the second chapter of the new season and can...

“The legacy of this franchise is just something to behold,” says “The Book of Boba Fett” composer Joseph Shirley. Shirley worked alongside longtime collaborator Ludwig Goransson to craft the score of the latest Star Wars outing on Disney+. The music these co-composers created spans a vast array of sounds to get to the heart of the titular bounty hunter’s journey while also fitting into the greater canon of the series. As someone who was inspired to pursue film music based on John Williams’ iconic “Star Wars” material, Shirley is quick to point out “I know how important that musical legacy is.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) made his Disney+ debut in “The Mandalorian,” so some musical themes had already been created for the character. But Shirley says it was important to “build upon it and grow upon” those cues in order to create a...

“Bad Trip” is a comedy film that mixes a fictional narrative with candid pranks on unsuspecting victims. So, obviously, when crafting the score and music for the film, you have to find a way to get star Eric Andre to sing a showtune, right?
With “Bad Trip” finally hitting Netflix on March 26, we’re thrilled to premiere two tracks from the upcoming soundtrack, including one that features Andre singing a pretty damn catchy tune.

Justin Timberlake and Anderson .Paak promote productivity in “Don’t Slack,” an upbeat, funky song from the Trolls World Tour soundtrack, out March 13th.
“Don’t Slack” features Timberlake and .Paak trading off lines. “Imagine all the lives that we can save/You don’t even know the power you got in them legs,” Timberlake sings. The disco-tinged track carries the same positivity as “Can’t Stop the Feeling,” only now it’s trolls that seek sunshine in their pocket.

Sza and Justin Timberlake released “The Other Side,” the first song from the upcoming “Trolls World Tour” soundtrack.
Of course, Timberlake’s Grammy-winning 2016 hit “Can’t Stop the Feeling,” from the first “Trolls” film, was one of the most massive hits in a career filled with them, and like that song, this one involves co-writer Max Martin — the biggest hitmaker of the past 25 years — and sounds like it could be just as big.
The eye-catching video — a throwback to Hype Williams’ 1990s fish-eye-lensed clips for Missy Elliott, Diddy, Mase and others — adds to the song’s appeal, and includes some comic elements as well: Watch for the moment when Sza wipes out on her towering heels.
The track was written specifically for the film by Justin Timberlake, Martin, Ludwig Göransson, Sarah Aarons and Solana Rowe (Sza) and produced by Timberlake and Göransson.
