A throwback to all the B-grade knockoffs that followed such hit late ’80s/early ’90s household thrillers as “The Stepfather,” “Pacific Heights,” and “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle,” “Paradise Cove” will be nobody’s idea of an original movie, let alone a good one. Still, it provides a degree of schlock entertainment value, as a young couple discover their Malibu fixer-upper comes with a crazy homeless woman squatting on the premises, itching to turn homicidal … again. Low on suspense and plausibility but high on tasteless and absurd ideas, Martin Guigui’s film does offer undiscriminating viewers some fun, albeit more of a laughing-at than laughing-with variety.

"What's the wife of a big Hollywood producer doing livin' under a house?" Quiver has unveiled an official US trailer for an indie psychological thriller titled Paradise Cove, the latest film made by the musician / filmmaker Martin Guigui. How's this for a crazy concept? A contractor and his wife move to Malibu to flip his mother's beach house and are terrorized by the deranged homeless lady living under the house. Watch out for the unhinged squatter! The film is described as a "super fun throwback thriller" that seems to be riffing on a lot of the dumb 90s suspense films. Mena Suvari stars with Todd Grinnell, Kristin Bauer van Straten, Eddie Goines, Krista Allen, Horacio Galaviz, and Eddie Rivera. This looks a bit too wild and kooky, not in a good way. But you never know...? Here's the official US trailer (+ poster) for Martin Guigui's Paradise Cove, direct from YouTube: This February,...

There’s no easy way to digest the hard facts at the heart of director Kenny Roy’s “Chance.” From the very first moments, this animated feature about a peaceable pit bull born into dogfighting tells the audience that it will be difficult to avert their eyes from this horror any longer. While the film’s animal activism is valuable for promoting tighter laws and increased penalties for this barbaric crime, and the filmmakers’ hearts are assuredly in the right place, the manner in which they execute their vision doesn’t exactly inspire. Animation is perhaps the most powerful way to illustrate dogfighting from a dog’s point of view, but the unrelentingly dark and violent approach to the subject matter is too brutal, bleak and occasionally bloody. If viewers are turned off, the film may only be preaching to the choir.

Hell hath no fury like women scorned who band together to get revenge on men who used them, forming the titular Coalition. From first-time feature director Monica Mingo, working with a modest budget of $1m, comes a tired plotline infused with one part The First Wives Club and one part Just Wright. Set in the high-income socialite bracket, with sweeping commentary on the misogynistic tendencies of professional athletes, The Coalition is just plain flat.
Prime Alexander (Eddie Goines) is a basketball hotshot still riding with his so-called 1800 Crew. Boozing and carousing, they use and discard women like mixers with bottle service. When Alexander humiliates flame-of-the-week Autumn (Ingrid Clay), she rallies the girls to seek revenge on the men who live without regarding karma and consequences.

I thought orginally that The Coalition was something new to S & A, but I discovered that back in July 2011 we first reported about this film produced by Team Sizzle, a production company financed by Baltimore Ravens football player Terrell Suggs. The production company previously produced two short films, Sisters and When Beautiful People Do Ugly Things, both written and directed by Monica Mingo and back during the summer of 2011 in Arizona, Mingo directed Team Sizzle's first feature film The Coalition. The films stars Denyce Lawton, J.R. Ramirez, Adrienne Bailon, Nadine Ellis, Shanti Lowry, Eddie Goines and Jackee Harry and according to Team Sizzle is...

Last week, here on S & A, I posted an item about this new short titled Ali Speaks, made by actor Eddie Goines III, and filmmaker Foley, which made to honor and document the legendary Muhammad Ali. As Goines, who plays Ali in the film, said about the short, "I wanted to collaborate with a great visionary artist like Foley and really make something powerful on this incredible force that Muhammad Ali was and is. I just don't think we've ever had anything really evoke his impact on society and we're excited about what this piece is going to display to the world." The short made its exclusive online premiere last week, and you can watch it...

It shouldn’t be a surprise if Eddie Goines looks a tad familiar. If you’ve been following the web series Celeste Bright, which we featured Here on this site, then you may recognize him as the male lead, Agent Rick Taylor. If you didn’t catch that, you may have seen him on the box cover of Just For Men hair care products; or perhaps you spotted him in Ridley Scott’s 2007 movie, American Gangster; or playing the leading man opposite Ms Beyoncé in her If I Were a Boy video… Then of course there’s his football career, culminating with the Seattle Seahawks, the New York Giants and Indianapolis Colts, but ended due to a knee injury.
Well whether any of that rings any bells or not, something tells me he’ll be on many a radar at some time soon, becaus the man just won’t stop at anything less!

Due to arrive on a computer/smart-phone screen near you this June, Celeste Bright, a new web series written and produced by regular S&A reader Sonya Steele, this trailer looks more like it’s for a gritty TV series or feature film. I’ve not been a big web series watcher so far but, from what little I’ve tried, I’d have to say that a healthy dose of suspense along with a certain quality that doesn’t look like corners have been cut in the technical, aesthetic and thespian departments help considerably. So this one already sits well with me.
The dramatic web TV series follows investment banker Celeste (Ryan Michelle Bathe – “Trauma”), a woman who plays by her own rules until an unsavory client (Brad Raider) makes her a target of FBI Special Agent Rick Taylor (Eddie Goines).
Visit the Celeste Bright website for more information.

Trailer for an upcoming web series created and written by Sonya Steele, co-directed by Joe Doughrity and Gregory Storm.
It’s titled Celeste Bright, and is described as a drama series that “follows investment banker Celeste (Ryan Michelle Bathe from Trauma), a woman who plays by her own rules, until an unsavory client (Brad Raider) makes her a target of FBI Special Agent Rick Taylor (Eddie Goines).”
I’m definitely intrigued by what I see in the below trailer, and I’ll be giving this a look when it debuts online in June, so stay tuned. In the meantime, check out the below trailer for Celeste Bright:
