Updated with HFPA response and Time’s Up statement: In a letter addressed to HFPA COO Greg Goecker and Board Chair Meher Tatna, a collective of Hollywood publicists today warned the group it had better make meaningful changes, or risk them telling their star clients to stay away from the Golden Globes.
The HFPA’s board issued a lengthy statement in response, which says in part that the board has “unanimously approved a plan to increase membership to a minimum of 100 members this year, with a requirement that at least 13 percent of the membership be Black journalists.” Read the full statement below.
Time’s Up also issued a statement tonight commending the publicists’ move. Read that below also.
The HFPA, never the most credible of organizations, is usually the subject of an expose every few years. This year was a doozy, with the LA Times uncovering that the group didn’t have a single Black member,...

Last Wednesday an email chain started to circulate around Hollywood’s press agencies, who represent many of the entertainment industry’s top stars. Over the decades, some veteran publicists were getting sick and tired of the demands of The Hollywood Foreign Press, that coterie of about 90 foreign correspondents who originally banded together to get access to movie stars and eventually came to believe they were friends with them.
The HFPA launched the Golden Globes in 1944, and this past season came under fire after the latest in a series of muckraking newspaper stories over the years exposing their susceptibility to exotic junkets and excessive swag, cozy relationships with publicists, and their myopia about diversity within their membership ranks. After refusing to hire a diversity consultant, the HFPA went ahead and recently put some advisors on their payroll, announcing at the Golden Globes, which were an anemic affair this year, that they would make changes.

Hollywood publicists have selected “Crazy Rich Asians” as the top movie publicity campaign for 2018 and “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” as the best television campaign.
Warner Bros.’ “Crazy Rich Asians” topped the campaigns for Disney’s “Black Panther,” Fox’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Paramount’s “A Quiet Place,” Sony’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” and Universal’s “Halloween” for the Maxwell Weinberg award.
“Passion became our collateral,” said Warner publicist Adam Keen in his acceptance speech. “The film delivered on its promise.”
Ryan Aguirre won the award for “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” topping “The Alienist” for Gabriela Zapata, “Mayans, M.C.” for Chris Kaspers, “Pose” for Yong Kim, and “Single Parents” for Shari Rosenblum.
The awards were presented at the 56th annual International Cinematographers Guild Awards on Friday at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif. Dennis Dugan hosted.

Los Angeles (AP) — Chevy Chase has checked into a rehab facility in Minnesota for treatment for an alcohol problem. Chase's publicist Heidi Schaeffer said Monday that Chase is at Hazelden Addiction Treatment Center for what she calls a "tuneup" in his recovery. Chase has had struggles with substances during his career. He checked into the Betty Ford Clinic in the 1980s for treatment for an addiction to prescription pain killers. Both Deadline Film Editor Mike Fleming and Deadline Awards Columnist Pete Hammond were nominated for the 50th Annual Publicists Award this year. At the gala luncheon held today, the Publicists of the International Cinematographers Guild (Iatse Local 600) announced that Hammond won. (Like it would have killed you flacks to give it to both our guys?) Pete now becomes only the second journalist to win this award twice. Deadline TV Editor Nellie Andreeva was nominated last year. And, believe it or not, I was nominated in 2008. (Everybody immediately thought it was a hoax.) What an incredible showing for our small staff! Deadline is very proud of all our nominees and this year’s winner. Other winners were announced in four categories: the Les Mason Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest honor they can bestow on one of their members, went to Heidi Schaeffer, vice president Pmkbnc Public Relations; the International Media Award...
