India is on the verge of producing a global breakthrough streaming hit, leading industry players said over the past week across two panel discussions.
The mood in the country has been celebratory, even self-congratulatory, albeit with some justification, after the Oscar wins for S.S. Rajamouli’s “Rrr” and Karthiki Gonsalves and Guneet Monga’s “The Elephant Whisperers.” On the streaming front, all the major players have had several hits. SonyLIV scored an International Emmy nomination for “Rocket Boys,” for lead actor Jim Sarbh. Netflix won the International Emmy for comedy for “Vir Das: Landing” and “The Railway Men” cracked the streamer’s global non-English TV top 3 in addition to topping the South Asian chart. Locally, Netflix dominated the Filmfare streaming awards with 26 wins including prizes for “Trial by Fire,” “Kohrra” and “Scoop.”

The Elephant Whisperers producer Guneet Monga says ‘India’s moment was taken away from me’ at Oscars
The Elephant Whisperers producer Guneet Monga has opened up about being cut off before she could deliver her Oscars acceptance speech.
The 39-year-old producer, who won the Academy Award in the Best Documentary Short film category, was upset by the moment that also caused uproar among film fans.
Footage of the incident showed Monga holding an Oscar and waiting for director Kartiki Gonsalves to end her speech. However, as she approached the mic, the exit music began playing and both women were escorted off-stage.
The moment also caused controversy among fans, with many pointing out that Matthew Freud and Charlie Mackesy, who accepted The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse’s win for Best Animated Short, were given ample time to make their speeches after The Elephant Whisperers.
“There was a shock on my face,” Monga has now told Bombay Times.

A weary but cheery Monga, the executive producer of Oscar-winning documentary short film The Elephant Whisperers, reached here shortly after 3 a.m., to huge screams of excitement by the people present there to receive their near and dear ones.
The paparazzi was also out in full strength and virtually made a bull run for her, with their cameras or microphones aimed at her, seeking her fresh reactions to her Oscar conquest.
However, she barely spoke and was hardly audible in the milieu and her security personnel bundled her into a waiting car along the Oscar trophy within minutes.
All the time, Monga held on dearly to her coveted Oscar statuette – now becoming a familiar figurine in Indian entertainment circles, raised it, waved it a little, but it was mostly close to her chest, even in the vehicle.
Though appearing tired after her long flight from Los Angeles, Monga managed to mumble a few bytes,...

Three years after “Parasite” became the first non-English-language movie to win Best Picture, the Oscars went international across many categories, and turned the ceremony into a global village. The evening reflected an awards season and industry where Hollywood matters more as a portal and less as a source. Not everyone is happy about this — on Facebook, Paul Schrader groused about “the scramble to be woke” and a loss of the ceremony’s “provincial” origins — but that’s selective memory: Hollywood is the invention of immigrants.
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” made the most noise, but one of the biggest historical achievements was played off the stage. In the acceptance speech for documentary short film “The Elephant Whisperers,” producer Guneet Monga yelled into the microphone that her movie was the first Indian production to win an Oscar. The front row, filled with A-listers, heard her and cheered; everyone at home heard a blaring orchestra.

Because of the unimaginable-a-year-ago dominance of Everything Everywhere All at Once and the perception bias in which deviations from the norm appear more outsized than they actually are, the 2023 Oscars might be remembered as the most Asian Academy Awards yet.
Winners of Asian descent — namely, of Chinese and Indian ethnicity — took home statuettes in eight categories, the most ever in a single year (Asian winners showed up in five races in 2009 and 2020, aka the Slumdog Millionaire and Parasite years, respectively, and in four in 2001 and 2021, aka the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Nomadland/Minari years).
Daniel Kwan, whose parents hail from Hong Kong and Taiwan, was responsible for three category wins: original screenplay, directing (both shared with Daniel Scheinert) and best picture, which the Daniels shared with producer Jonathan Wang, whose late father was Taiwanese. Kwan and Wang are the first U.S.-born Asians to win their Oscar categories.

The Oscar for the Best Documentary Short Film generally ends as a blur in the blaze of the bigger names jostling for international attention at any Academy Awards evening. For Guneet Monga, though, it has earned a special place in her heart, for she has come home with it twice. As executive producer, Guneet Monga was the force behind ‘The Elephant Whisperers’, photographer Kartiki Gonsalves’ maiden documentary, lifting the Oscar for Best Documentary Short Film at the 95th Academy Awards. It was her second time.
Monga’s first Oscar was for the documentary short film, Iranian American filmmaker Rayka Zehtabch’s ‘Period: End of Sentence’, which follows a group of local women at Kathikera village in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh, as they learn how to operate a machine that makes low-cost, biodegradable sanitary pads, which they sell to other women at affordable prices.

Director Kartiki Gonsalves and producer Guneet Monga became the first Indian filmmakers to claim competitive Oscars after their short documentary The Elephant Whisperers won the Academy Award tonight.
Gonsalves gave thanks to “my motherland, India,” as she accepted the award.
The Elephant Whisperers revolves around Bomman and Belli, an Indigenous couple and their “large” family – orphaned elephant calves that they help raise in the Theppakadu Elephant camp within the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in South India. Gonsalves spent five years following this human-elephant blended family for her Netflix documentary.
“I stand here today to speak for the sacred bond between us and our natural world,” Gonsalves said as she began her acceptance speech, “for the respect of Indigenous communities and empathy towards other living beings we share our space with, and finally, for coexistence.”

The Indian content is steadily making waves in the international arena and producer Guneet Monga feels that the streaming services have played a key role in taking Indian content to the remotest places on earth. What works particularly in the case of the aforementioned films is their rootedness and the honesty with which the stories are told.
Monga told Ians: "Our storytelling is rooted here and it’s high time we are recognised across the globe. After all, we are the most prolific film industry in the world. ‘Rrr’ is so Indian and that’s the reason it went global because it was rooted."

Making “The Elephant Whisperers,” the Indian film nominated in the Oscars’ documentary short film category, was a five-year long journey for director Kartiki Gonsalves.
The film follows a couple, Bomman and Bellie, who devote their lives to caring for an orphaned baby elephant named Raghu.
The film marks the directorial debut of Gonsalves, a prolific wildlife and social documentary photographer, photojournalist and cinematographer. Gonsalves is from the Nilgiris Mountains region of southern India. On a trip back to her family home, Gonsalves met Raghu when he was three months old and forged what she describes as an “unbreakable bond” with the elephant.

Talking about Sunny, Guneet said: “One of the best things about Sunny is he is an extremely simple and loving man. He is my biggest cheerleader as well as the biggest critic. Even though I have only met him last year, I can surely say I’m marrying my best friend.”
