Shakuntala Devi (Amazon Prime Video)
Starring Vidya Balan, Jisshu Sengupta, Shakuntala’s husband, Sanya Malhotra, Amit Sadh
Directed by Anu Menon
The best part of getting Vidya Balan to play the maths genius Shakuntala Devi is that that they both, the maths genius and the actresss, make their job look so easy. While Shakuntala Devi rattles off gigantic numbers (caterpillaring on screen a la Hidden Figures) to an open-mouthed audience all across the world, Vidya Balan’s performance will in all likelihood would have the same affect on an audience as the amazing story of the “human computer”.
Shakuntala Devi comes to us unadulterated, unapologetic and refreshingly free of cloying sentimentality. Well, almost. There are sequences towards the end of the nifty narrative where mother Vidya Balan and daughter Sania Malhotra where director Annu Menon could have pulled out all tops.
Luckily, the mood in this buoyant bio-pic is forever sunny,...

Does Total Dhamaal get boring at any point?
No, if you are a sucker for goofy, no brainers that are purely designed to make you laugh then Total Dhamaal is for you, it won?t bore you or make you go to sleep and snore.
What is the story of Total Dhamaal? What is this circus all about?

Sonakshi Sinha has recreated Helen’s iconic track ‘Mungda’ for Indra Kumar’s upcoming film, Total Dhamaal. The actress will be seen shaking a leg for this special number along with Ajay Devgn.
Kookie Gulati who directed Mungda shares, “For a particular situation in the film, we needed a young & energetic song to keep with the pace of the film. That’s when the idea of ‘Mungda’ came into place. When we heard the recreated version by Gourov – Roshin, we wanted someone who could match up the beats of the song! We immediately thought of Sonakshi Sinha – she has a unique & an amazing blend to reach the youth as well as the masses. I’ll tell you Sonakshi Sinha fits this song perfectly. She is a great dancer with a very expressive face. We got Adil Shaikh to do the choreography and he’s killed it! Mohit Rai helped putting her look together,...

Maybe it’s too early here to mention Kirti Kulhari’s indomitable brilliance in this grossly mis-reviewed film. But then, considering she has given what is arguably the most outstanding performance by a female protagonist since Tabu in Chandni Bar and has even gone further than Tabu in some sequences, this is as good a time as any to bring up her climactic court scene where she tells the spellbound judge (he wears the same expression that I did) how her life changed one day when she took the wrong turn and ended up watching the ravages caused by the Congress regime at Turkman Gate.
When Kirti speaks of serendipity her character Indu (I will ignore the cheap thrills of ambiguity afforded by her full name) doesn’t know what that words means. It is that innocence...

It’s that life-defining moment when a character on screen transforms totally into a real-life personality. We’ve seen Seema Biswas, Ben Kingsley and Farhan Akhtar metamorphose into real-life characters in front of our bewildered eyes.
Now it is Priyanka Chopra. She virtually transforms her physicality before entering the spirit and the soul of boxing champ Mary Kom.
And what a grand entry!
Ladies and gentlemen, we give you Priyanka Chopra as the gritting volatile boxer from Manipur who won’t take no for an answer, even from God. Penetrating a male domain like boxing in a gender-defying swoop, Pryinka’s Mc takes us on a voyage of self-discovery where a plucky poor girl from rural Manipur goes right to the Olympics. It’s an incredible story filled with sound and fury signifying something deep and seductive, just waiting to be told.
