Xavier Gens’ period chiller “Cold Skin,” based on the 2002 novel by Catalan author Albert Sánchez Piñol, offers a good-looking and well-crafted if familiar chunk of creature-siege horror as two men in a remote setting battle off an army of amphibious attackers each night. Even the critters themselves have a déjà-vu quality — they resemble the pale-white, clammy humanoid predators of the “Descent” movies — though the primary setting of an island lighthouse over a century ago lends some distinctive atmosphere. Already released in several countries, Goldwyn’s planned Sept. 7 U.S. release should do all right with genre fans, though it won’t likely generate any clamor for sequels.
In Piñol’s widely translated book, the protagonist is a disillusioned fighter for Irish independence. Here, there’s no explanation why David Oakes’ young Irishman has decided to spend a year in complete isolation as the meteorologist on an island near the Antarctic Circle,...

The year is 1914, the planet is about to crack open under the bloody strain of World War I, and a nameless man played by British actor David Oakes is sailing towards the ends of the earth in order to get away from it all. Xavier Gens’ “Cold Skin” never tells us much about who he was, or what inspired him to run from it — the film eschews even the hazy background information that Albert Sánchez Piñol provided in his 2002 novel of the same name — but it’s clear that this sturdy, unremarkable bloke has no further interest in violence.
In fact, our hero is so eager for serenity that he’s decided to abandon human civilization for an entire year, agreeing to work as a meteorologist on a uninhabited island in a frigid corner of the South Atlantic. Those familiar with Gens’ previous films (“The Crucifixion” and “The Divide” typifying...

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by the marketing dept. of Samuel Goldwyn. Director: Xavier Gens. Writers: Jesús Olmo, Eron Sheean and Albert Sánchez Piñol. Cast: Ray Stevenson, David Oakes and Aura Garrido. French filmmaker Xavier Gens must have played the mobile game Shoggoth Rising when he was conceiving Cold Skin. There are moments in his cinematic treatment which looks all too familiar. While the story is different, the fact both owe a huge debt to H.P. Lovecraft says it all. When both take place at a lonely isolated lighthouse and the conflict lies between Man vs. Nature, just who will first succumb to the fury (madness) is easily evident. The cinematography by Daniel Aranyó is gorgeous to behold. The intro feels like it's straight out of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein novel. However, instead of finding two people at odds with each other, they are ferrying...

Ahead of the UK premiere of Cold Skin at Horror Channel FrightFest Glasgow 2018, director Xavier Gens reflects on the film’s emotional journey to screen, bachelor parties and what scares him the most…
You were a fan of the book by Albert Sánchez Piñol and wanted to make it after Frontiere(S). What took so long?
It took so long because we had to find the right combination between budget and the story we wanted to tell. If you adapt a film from a book and you are respectful of the original story you have to find how to make it perfect. And reading the first chapter of Cold Skin I was thinking “how can I do that with the budget of an indie film?”
So, first we wrote the script, which took over two years, and then we started looking at the best locations. We have been everywhere…Canada,...

At the vanguard of French extreme cinema, director Xavier Gens made his name with Frontiere(s) and The Divide. Now he brings us Cold Skin, a stunning adaptation of Albert Sánchez Piñol’s acclaimed novel that’s part H.P. Lovecraft, part Joseph Conrad and stars David Oakes and Ray Stevenson.
On the edge of the Antarctic Circle, a steamship approaches a desolate island. On board is a young man named Friend (David Oakes), poised to take the post of weather observer, to live in solitude at the end of the earth. But on shore he finds no trace of the man whom he has been sent to replace, just a deranged castaway, Gruner (Ray Stevenson), who has witnessed a horror he refuses to name. For the next twelve months his entire world will consist of a deserted cabin, trees, rocks, silence and the surrounding sea. Then night begins to fall...

Director Xavier Gens took a moment to share with fans a bit of concept art from his flick Cold Skin that features the flick's monster. David Slade was once attached to direct this adaptation of the Albert Sánchez Piñol novel before Gens took the reigns.
We wouldn't look for this anytime soon, though, as it's been kicking around since 2009 and Gens is in currently in development on several other projects including James Wan's House of Horrors.
Cold Skin was Piñol's debut novel. The book chronicles the stay of an unnamed weather official on a remote island in the south Atlantic close to the Antarctic Circle. The film adaptation was written by 28 Weeks Later's Jesus Olmo.
Check out the artwork below by Jonathan Delerue.

Cold Skin, a horror film set on the edge fo the world, will be director Xavier Gens' (The Divide) next production. This film is based on Albert Sánchez Piñol paperback of the same name and filming is expected to take place in Iceland, one of the most geographically active land masses in the world. Here, as the story goes, a replacement "weather observer" (Uhm) finds his colleague missing and the lighthouse occupied by a strange neighbour. Events get even stranger when this young man encounters demons from the sea intent on his dispatch.
Albert Sánchez Piñol's book has been compared to an adolescent's dream (Independent) and to a B-movie style of writing (Guardian). However, Piñol, a Catalan and Spanish author, is still regarded as a top novelist. As well, reviews on Pinol's book hint at further plot points including a sexual romp with one of the female monsters,...

Whoa, so does this mean David Slade’s “Cold Skin” might end up getting made and finished before the director’s outing as a “Twilight” director? Nope, even though we’re already getting a teaser poster for Slade’s “Cold Skin”, a psychological horror film scheduled to shoot sometime in March 2010, which would put it about the time Slade wraps the third “Twilight” movie. The teaser poster of course doesn’t reveal much, though it, along with the description below, do seem to indicate Slade might be staying faithful to the original novel’s more sexual elements. Based on the best-selling Spanish novel by Albert Sánchez Piñol, Cold Skin is set on an Antarctic island, where a young man is stationed to log wind conditions. He discovers that the place is the habitat of nocturnal, amphibious humanoids, and encounters an older man there named Gruner, who has tamed one and made it his sex slave.

30 Days of Night director David Slade, most recently attributed to his attachment to tween-screech-inducing The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, is set to return to the snow in order to helm Cold Skin. Based on the bestselling Spanish novel of the same name written by Albert Sánchez Piñol, Cold Skin is an Antarctic horror/psychological thriller set on a bleak, barren island. The fairly effects-heavy pic is prepped to shoot in March of 2010 and is reportedly getting a modest budget of about $25 million. It's unknown just how faithful Jesus Olmo's script will be to the novel, but below is a good synopsis straight from Amazon. In this grim, H.G. Wellsian fable, an unnamed European of unspecified nationality is hired to spend an unspecified mid-20th-century year logging wind conditions on a tiny Antarctic island. Anticipating solitude, the bookish young man soon discovers that he has a neighbor—the pathologically reclusive...
