When his neighbor at Pier 56 on Seattle's waterfront put up a sign reading "Don't Feed Sea Gulls, Health Regulation." Ivar responded by publishing a recipe for sea gull health bread and posting a sign on his own Pier 54 welcoming sea gulls and their lovers.
As a publicity gag he ran for a position on the Seattle Port Commission and won.
He could sing over two hundred songs from memory.
Was an expert on Northwest folk music.
For years he sponsored a Fourth of July fireworks show on Seattle's Elliott Bay.
