Exclusive: Scott Emmer has joined the indie production company Riverside Entertainment, based out of L.A. and Nashville, as Development Executive, with Amanda Abicalaffe elevating to Director of Development.
Based in Los Angeles, Emmer will now oversee all aspects of development across Riverside’s growing slate of films and series. He comes to the company after stints at Meta, Marc Butan’s MadRiver Pictures, Audience Network and ICM.
In a statement to Deadline, he said: “I am thrilled and grateful to be joining the development team at Riverside. We share values of genuine collaboration as well as passion and commitment to premium storytelling.”
Brian Loschiavo, Riverside Entertainment Co-Founder and Executive Producer, called Emmer “the missing link we’ve needed in Los Angeles. Being an LA native with deep roots in the entertainment business, Scott’s relationships and instincts will help us level-up as we continue to expand into scripted.”

Exclusive: Rob Morgan (Smile) will produce and star in the crime film Dixie Crystal, based on the real-life FBI Operation of the same name, from brother filmmakers Conor and Jake Allyn (No Man’s Land).
The film from Riverside Entertainment and Stride Management centers on FBI special agent Jim Anderson (Morgan), who faces the overwhelming job of ridding methamphetamine from Harlan, Kentucky — a sprawling mountain ghetto policed by only a handful of lawmen. Over the course of the pic, Jim finds himself pitted against a former coal union boss turned drug kingpin. With a different skin color and a badge that means little in the hollers, he recruits local cop, Harlan native and recovering addict Cam (Jake Allyn) to assist. They start an investigation into locally made meth, or “Dixie Crystal,” and the locals behind it. But the deeper the investigation goes, the more Jim realizes that the drugs he’s chasing,...

Exclusive: Riverside Entertainment is expanding into scripted content with the coming-of-age LGBTQ+ drama Remy & Arletta, written by and starring Micaela Wittman (Clairevoyant), and the nihilistic thriller Manodrome, starring Academy Award nominee Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) and Academy Award winner Adrien Brody (The Pianist).
The Los Angeles and Nashville-based production company, known for its unscripted success with the SXSW music doc Bluebird and the Magnolia Network series Making Modern with Brooke and Brice, came aboard both projects after production wrapped to assist with finishing funds and creative in post, also signing Wittman and her fellow multi-hyphenate Arthur De Larroche (Clairevoyant) to a first-look deal. Brian Loschiavo, Jeff Molyneaux and Pastor Alvarado will exec produce both Remy & Arletta and Manodrome on behalf of Riverside, which they lead as partners.
Adapted from Wittman’s bestselling novel of the same name, Remy & Arletta is based on a true story about two teens struggling to define their co-dependent relationship.

Maintaining a powerful sense of perseverance and hope as they pursue their dreams of garnering attention for their passion is vital for any up-and-coming, and even established, person, and even establishment. As affectionate as a love letter but as substantial as an infomercial, Brian Loschiavo’s “Bluebird” may be of most interest to casual and/or newly converted country music fans who have occasionally wondered about the songwriters behind the songs. There’s a better than even-money chance that anyone who’s a loyal and longtime aficionado of the musical genre already has at least a nodding acquaintance with the history and significance of The Bluebird Café, the intimate Nashville venue often cited as a launching pad for both platinum-selling superstars and behind-the-scenes tunesmiths. On the other hand, even many of those individuals could be entertained by what amounts to a backstage tour.
Director-editor Loschiavo capably balances the household names and unsung heroes in the cavalcade of interviewees who, with degrees of enthusiasm ranging from nostalgic to reverential, tell the story of an improbable landmark in an unlikely setting.

Most film festivals will dot their documentary lineups with the occasional music-focused title or two; SXSW has an entire sidebar devoted to them. It makes perfect sense that, having sprung from the Austin-based event’s origins as a showcase for bands and the chance for college-radio D.J.s and rock journalists to drink a brewery’s worth of beer, the cinematic arm of South by Southwest would have added a “24 Beats Per Second” program early on in its existence. And while we’re certainly biased — see: the publication you...

A documentary about one of Nashville’s most celebrated and important venues will premiere at the 2019 South by Southwest Film Festival: Bluebird tells the story of the Bluebird Cafe, which has been a launching pad for new songwriters since 1982.
Situated in a nondescript strip mall in the city’s Green Hills neighborhood, the Bluebird Cafe, with its tight 90-maximum capacity, has played host to career-making performances. Taylor Swift was famously discovered on its stage, and the pop superstar is one of many artists who appear in the film.
