In the wake of the dreadful “Madame Web” flop, the central question everyone seems to be asking themselves when it comes to Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (Ssmu) is, what the hell is going on over there at that studio? While Sony’s superhero movies have flourished when they are Marvel co-productions, “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” grossing almost $2 billion during the 2021 pandemic, and the “Spider-Verse” are big critical and commercial hits under Christopher Lord and Phil Miller, everything else appears to be a wash of late.

The name Preston Mutanga might not ring a bell, but anyone who has contributed to the $235 million and counting box office haul for “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has seen his work on the big screen.
Mutanga is a 14-year-old from Toronto, Canada, who landed a role as an animator on “Across the Spider-Verse” after he recreated the film’s trailer shot-for-shot in the style of Lego blocks and left producers Chris Lord and Phil Miller dazzled (via The New York Times). Not too bad for your industry debut.
Mutanga uploaded his Lego remake of the “Across the Spider-Verse” trailer to Twitter on Jan. 2 (see the post below). Lord and Miller, both active Twitter users, caught wind of the clip and were impressed — the directors know a thing or two about crafting Lego-inspired sequences as the directors of 2014’s “The Lego Movie.” When the team decided they wanted a scene in...

Cocaine Bear’s appeal starts – and, for many, ends – with its title. The movie promises one thing – a bear high on cocaine – and the only question is which approach director Elizabeth Banks will take: the one that treats it seriously and says “this is the scariest thing ever,” or the one that says “we’re making a movie called Cocaine Bear. Isn’t that crazy?”
Banks – supported by producers Christopher Lord and Phil Miller, who never met a crazy premise they could ignore – wisely takes the second route, leaning into the humor and carnage that collide under its absurd premise. And whether you like it or loathe it, you will probably walk away going: “yep; that’s exactly what I thought a movie called Cocaine Bear would be.”
Very loosely based on a true story from the 1980s, the film rockets to a start with an unhinged opening, as a...

Updated, 11:20 Am: Paramount’s upcoming buddy comedy that pairs Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrne has a very 2019 new title: The film formerly known as Limited Partners has been rechristened as Like a Boss. The pic co-starring Salma Hayek keeps its January 10 release date.
Previously, March 15: Paramount has moved the release of its Tiffany Haddish-Rose Byrne buddy comedy Limited Partners back by six months to January 10 and dated its literary-adaptation toon The Tiger’s Apprentice for 2020.
Limited Partners, which the studio acquired as a pitch in July, had been set to roll out on June 28 but no will open January 10. That frame is where Stx launched another buddy comedy this year: The Upside, which went on to gross $105 million. The Haddish-Byrne directed by Miguel Arteta romp will face off against an untitled Chris Lord-Phil Miller toon from Sony that weekend, moving away from Universal’s Yesterday and Warner Bros’ next Annabelle chiller.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, who has been the steward of the Star Wars universe since 2012, has signed a three-year extension that will keep her with the company through 2021.
Kennedy has been the lead figure for the cinematic reinvigoration of the Jedi universe under the corporate banner of The Walt Disney Co, and she would be the first to admit it has been a bumpy endeavor at times. Frequent backlash from dissatisfied fans, mixed reviews from critics and a few apparent retreats on strategic initiatives all have made Kennedy acutely aware of the different rules and expectations that apply to any chronicler of the Skywalker family exploits.
Disney has released four new Star Wars films with global box office revenues now approaching $4.5 billion. Big business, to be sure, but the most recent of those releases, Solo: A Star Wars Story, fell short of the legendary franchise’s usual expectations. Solo was...

“Solo: A Star Wars Story” earned $14.1 million at the Thursday box office, breaking the Memorial Day record that was previously held by “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,” which grossed $13.2 million in previews.
In comparison, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” earned $45 million when it opened in previews last year, while “The Force Awakens” grossed $57 million and “Rogue One” rocketed to $29 million. “At World’s End” earned a total $139.8 million, a four-day record, in 2007.
“Solo: A Star Wars Story” is expected to break the record for the biggest four-day opening on Memorial Day weekend with at least $140 million. However, a $140 million opening for “Solo” would be the lowest opening total for a Disney-released “Star Wars” film.

“Solo: A Star Wars Story” was the rare Hollywood blockbuster that changed directors in mid-shoot.
With hundreds of millions of dollars on the line, the filmmaker shuffle could have doomed the picture and resulted in lots of bad blood on the set. However, in an interview at the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday, where “Solo: A Star Wars Story” is about to screen, Emilia Clarke said that the shift from directors Chris Lord and Phil Miller to Ron Howard was “seamless.”
Howard, the Oscar-winning director of “A Beautiful Mind,” had no time to prep, Clarke said, but on his first day he immediately earned the trust of his cast and crew.
“He took us all in and listened to everyone,” said Clarke, adding, “He took us from this kind of ‘what are we doing’ to a place of such ease and comfort and fun.”

We are just about three months away from the latest Star Wars movie–the quickest one has arrived after its predecessor–and with it came incessant pleas wondering why we haven’t seen any footage for a film those complaining about will see on opening day regardless. Well, now the first footage has arrived for Solo: A Star Wars Story, which marks the second spin-off in the re-launched franchise following another prequel, Rogue One.
Directed by Ron Howard, who replaced Chris Lord and Phil Miller after they nearly shot their entire film, extensive reshoots lasted throughout last summer and into October, but the film, which tells the origins of the galaxy’s most infamous, suave smuggler, is still on track to arrive this may. Led by Hail, Caesar! star Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, he’s joined by Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Joonas Suotamo,...

Smuggler. Scoundrel. Hero. And also…young(er)? With “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” the very first standalone “Star Wars” movie focused on the exploits of a single known character — versus “Rogue One,” which opted for a familiar story populated by mostly new characters — is finally bound for the big screen. The Ron Howard summer blockbuster-to-be promises an adventurous look at the early years of the beloved Han Solo, played in the film by “Hail, Caesar!” standout Alden Ehrenreich.
And by the looks of this first trailer, it’s going to be an adventure well worth taking, though likely a far different one than first expected by original directors Chris Lord and Phil Miller.

Feel that? There’s been a disturbance in the force… Earlier this week Director Colin Trevorrow parted ways with 2019’s Star Wars: Episode XI just months before the debut of Rian Johnson’s eagerly anticipated The Force Awakens follow up, The Last Jedi. According to Disney’s official statement, ‘differing visions’ were to blame for the apparent ‘mutual’ parting, however exactly what the nitty-gritty details were that caused the Director and studio to butt-heads remain a mystery… for now at least.
One thing we do know? Trevorrow’s departure marks the third time Disney and Lucasfilm have ditched a director whilst they’ve been deep in production. Fantastic Four’s Josh Trank was the first to go. The studio giant announced his departure from a (still) mysteriously unnamed Star Wars spin-off shortly after he dropped out of a Star Wars Celebration panel at the eleventh hour, despite clocking up a year of prep work.

Jon Watts is hardly the first up-and-coming filmmaker to be plucked from the indie film fold to helm a big-budget, high-stakes blockbuster. Nevertheless, the “Spider-Man: Homecoming” director was still surprised when Marvel came calling after his second film, “Cop Car,” screened at Sundance in 2015. Over the past few years, hiring first- and second-time directors to direct massive tentpole features has become standard procedure, from Colin Trevorrow to Josh Trank, Marc Webb to Gareth Edwards. When Watts got the call, he geeked out.
“I was so excited to just go to Marvel,” Watts said. “I actually still the visitor’s pass that they gave me to just get on the lot and everything. I wasn’t expecting any of this. It’s like when Bart Simpson goes to New York and he goes to the Mad Magazine headquarters.”

Last week we saw the group say good bye to the Malibu mansion. This week's installment, The Last Man on Earth Season 3 Episode 4, has them heading north to San Francisco.
Gail is the only one that knows how to travel appropriately. Sleeping with a bottle of wine next to her in her self-driving car. Sign me up for that!
You really can't blame her for hitting the bottle so early in the day. Todd's been so caught up with Melissa, Gail relapsed and packed Gordon.
Todd tries to explain but on cue Melissa runs by, allegedly training for whatever is out there. The point blank way January Jones delivers her lines gets better each week. I enjoyed watching her run back and forth as Todd and Gail fought.
That night Carol builds a Golden Gate bridge out of Twizlers, complete with bridge jumpers. Morbid but awesome as she explains...

Will Forte‘s Phil Miller finally has some friends to play with on Fox’s “Last Man on Earth” — but that doesn’t mean Hollywood’s nicest guy has forgotten his old buddies. TheWrap recently spoke with Forte about his returning (and excellent) sitcom, and our conversation veered off in a highly important direction. On the series, Miller leaves the character’s collection of sports-balls-with-faces buddies with Mike (Jason Sudeikis), an effort to keep his apparently dying brother company. But where is Gary, Diego, Bryce, Anton and the gang in real life? “They’re just in some bucket,” Forte told us.

Mark your diaries, Star Wars fans. Soon after Gareth Edwards lights up theaters in December with the release of Rogue One, Phil Lord and Chris Miller will fire up production on their hotly-anticipated Han Solo Anthology movie.
That’s according to series stalwart Lawrence Kasdan, revealing to Star Wars News that both directors now plan to begin shooting in London come January, when they’ll be welcoming newcomer Alden Ehrenreich in the role of the roguish and endearing smuggler.
Dancing around specific details, Kasdan confirmed that he penned the script for the Han Solo origins story in tandem with his son, Jon Kasdan. The esteemed screenwriter (The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi) also championed Phil Miller and Chris Lord as “great, funny and imaginative filmmakers,” before confirming that all-important start date.
Per Star Wars News:
Oh, I think so! You know, Chris Miller and Phil Lord are going to direct it.

As the next live action Spider-Man film gears up for filming in just a month of so, today brings about a rumor regarding Chris Lord and Phil Miller's animated feature; one I hope turns out to be the case. Come inside to check out the latest report.
The last time we heard any word regarding Sony's 2018 animated Spider-Man movie, it was for a delay in it's release date (moving to December 21, 2018). Since then, things have been fairly quiet until today's very interesting rumor. This is coming from Heroic Hollywood, who have a decent track record with such things, but as always, take the info with a grain of salt.
According to their sources, Miles Morales will be this film's titular Spider-Man rather than Peter Parker. Honestly, this makes a lot of sense, as Sony has already made it clear the film isn't connected to the live action reboot or the larger McU.

"The Last Man on Earth" has always been a series unafraid to approach the darkest elements of humanity. After all, the Fox comedy began with Phil Miller (Will Forte) driving across the United States in search of one more human soul, and when he couldn't find any, he was prepared to kill himself. Such an intro established the idea that if you're going to come up with a show about the only human survivor of a deadly global plague — as Forte, Christopher Miller and Phil Lord did here — you have to be willing to spend a lot of time thinking about, you know, death. And so does the audience watching at home. Read More: Why Racist Financing is Sending Filmmakers to a Colorful Television Landscape Season 2, however, took this to an authentically frightening place. It opened with Carol (Krsten Schaal) literally killing new group member Gordon (a short-lived cameo by Will Ferrell,...

Reunited and it feels so…violent! The Last Man on Earth has teased a family reunion for some of the survivors since the beginning, when we learned that while Will Forte's Phil Miller drove around on Earth trying to find other members of the living, his brother, Mike (Jason Sudeikis), was stuck in space with only his science experiment worms around to keep him company. But now Mike has not only managed to make it back to land, he's also found the survivors at their beachfront home in Malibu—and Sunday's episode ended with the two brothers racing toward each other, presumably for an embrace. Well, until Phil punched his younger brother in the groin. E! News has gotten a hold of the next part of...

It looks like Phil Miller and The Last Man on Earth TV show are both survivors. Fox is sticking with the Sunday night sitcom and has renewed it for a third season to air as part of the 2016-17 season.
The Last Man on Earth begins in 2020 -- a year after a deadly virus has swept the plant. A resident of Tucson, Phil (Will Forte) believes he's the last human alive but soon discovers he's not alone. The rest of the cast includes Kristen Schaal, January Jones, Mel Rodriguez, and Cleopatra Coleman.

Though many balked at its announcement, Sony Pictures Animation has reminded us all that its Emoji Movie is still very much in development, and it has a new release date to call its own: August 11, 2017.
It was just one of a number of animated features that the studio dated, with the other notable reshuffling arriving in the form of Chris Lord and Phil Miller’s animated Spider-Man movie, which has shied away from its tentative 2017 window – logical, given that Marvel’s live-action feature is due in 2017 – and taken up residence at December 21, 2018.
Lord and Miller are currently pitching a treatment for the animated film and are set to go on to produce. They’ll stop short of directing, though, with a certain Han Solo spinoff movie looming on the horizon as the creative pair begin to make tracks for the Star Wars universe.

Three years ago, Sony injected a new lease of life into its dormant Men in Black series with a threequel, welcoming back both Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones as Agent J and Agent K, respectively. Though a worldwide box office haul of $600 million paints the follow-up as a success on paper, fans and critics were less than impressed, and today brings word of the studio pulling out the trusty neuralizer to wipe away any memory of the 2012 sequel.
That’s because Laurie MacDonald and producing partner Walter Parkes – the creative minds engineering a Men in Black 4 – are keen to reinvent the cult action serious with a new installment, one which may feature “a prominent woman in black in the fourth [film].” Could we be seeing the return of Agent L?
Plans for the next chapter in the sci-fi universe are, as one would imagine, still very much in the early stages.

Will Forte's Tandy better behave, because the rest of the Tucson crew from The Last Man on Earth isn't exactly happy that he's back. Okay, that's an understatement—they're pretty upset that he's back, but making do with his presence considering there's only a handful of people left on Earth and beggars really can't be choosers. In E! News' exclusive sneak peek at Sunday's episode, "C to the T," Tandy (formerly known as Phil Miller until a hotter, manlier Phil Miller came along) must atone for his sins against the group. (The sins mainly boil down to being a gigantic d-bag, and trying to get literally every woman left on Earth to have sex with him.) The group has...

The hit sensation "Serial" podcast is bringing true crime to your television.
The writing/producing/directing team of Chris Lord and Phil Miller ("21 Jump Street," "The Lego Movie") have optioned the rights to the podcast with Fox 21 Television Studio.
"Serial" - which is an offshoot of "This American Life," and produced by Sarah Koenig and Julie Snyder - was the subject of watercooler talk across the country last year. The first season investigated the 1999 murder of high school student Hae Min Lee over the course of 12 episodes. The show received many accolades, including a Peabody Award. Lord and Miller are reportedly big fans.
The TV series will follow the making of the podcast as it investigates another case in-depth. The producers will search for a writer to join the team, then shop it to networks and streaming services.

Last season, The Last Man on Earth had a positive start in the ratings but then the numbers declined as the weeks progressed. Fox renewed it for a second season anyway. Will the numbers drop lower or will they rise this time? Cancelled or renewed for season three? Stay tuned.

“Last Man on Earth” is back — and so is Phil Miller’s horrific beard, which in real life is Will Forte‘s horrific beard. “It seemed like a fun thing to do passage of time,” he said on growing the bird’s nest back out. The Season 2 premiere episode is set six months from when we last touched base with Phil (Forte) and Carol (Kristen Schaal), who were hightailing it out of Tucson. “The character of Phil was set up with the beard,” Forte continued. “Once Phil shaved the beard off, he kind of became a different person. The Last Man on Earth got a little crowded by the end of its first season. By the end of season one, Phil Miller (Forte) found himself surrounded by a whole group of survivors (January Jones,

This past Sunday saw Fox’s The Last Man on Earth fail to add an Emmy to its collection of memorable artifacts (a gallery that features raisin balls, toilet pools, and Gary the Volleyball), but its appearance for multiple nominations was a pleasant reminder of the oddball success this series has been so far. Returning this Sunday for a second season, the post-apocalyptic comedy is very much the same show it was when premiering only seven months ago: anarchic, shambolic, loopy and (more often than not) very, very funny.
Star and creator Will Forte getting nominated for an acting award was hardly a shock, and executive producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller are no strangers to writing accolades. Will Forte has two Emmy nominations this year, including this one as a lead actor and another for writing the pilot episode ("Alice in Tucson") of Fox's freshman comedy "The Last Man on Earth." That episode is also his Emmy submission in the Best Comedy Actor race as the titular Phil Miller, who believes he's the last living person following a mysterious virus. Forte previously received bids for guest starring on "30 Rock" and as part of the writing staff of "Late Show with David Letterman." -Break- Click here to see the updated list of all 2015 Emmy episode submissions Synopsis Phil Miller traverses the country searching for other living humans after a virus has killed off all of Earth's population. This story first appeared in a special Emmy issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. More than a dozen sweaty bodies are crammed inside a tiny apartment in desertlike Chatsworth, Calif., on an uncomfortably hot August afternoon. In the 1970s, such a scenario would have signified something quite different — the town, located 27 miles northeast of Hollywood, was once a porn-industry hub. Today's activities, however, are decidedly more chaste as the cast and crew of Fox's The Last Man on Earth dig into filming its second season, set to premiere Sept. 27. Before "The Last Man on Earth" premiered, very few people knew what to expect from the new Fox comedy. It appeared to be about exactly what the title suggested, only Will Forte's "last man" was a slovenly, inventive goofball. Promos only showed him blowing up cars or making friends out of tennis balls (all balls, really). The actual plot was a mystery, which ended up adding to the level of intrigue around the show. Letting an audience's imagination sell a series is a dangerous ploy, and it takes a skilled team behind the camera to be as creative as the millions tuning in for Episode 1. The pilot didn't disappoint, which speaks volumes to the vision of directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. The imaginative duo known for "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs," "21 Jump Street" and "The Lego Movie" partnered with Forte to develop the story of Phil Miller...

We know the Han Solo spin-off is set for May 2018 with film-makers Chris Lord and Phil Miller (the Jump Street flicks) on-board to call the shots. So far, so awesome. What we don’t know is who’ll be playing Solo, but thanks to Kathleen Kennedy we can start crossing certain names, including Chris Pratt, off the list. Because according to the famed producer Solo’s going to be just a pup. Kennedy remarked to Entertainment Weekly:
“He’ll definitely be probably in the high teens, low 20s”
Harrison Ford was in his mid-30s when he dawned Solo’s smug grin for the first time, so it’s fair to assume this film will commence a whole heap of years before his fateful meeting with Ben Kenobi and Luke Skywalker.
