Exclusive: Mammoth Pictures has acquired film and TV rights to the bestselling novella Diary of a Murderer from award-winning Korean author Young-ha Kim. The company’s Creative Director Kourosh Ahari is set to direct an English-language feature adaptation, marking the first production under the deal, from a script by Henry Chaisson.
Diary of a Murderer tells the story of a former serial killer stricken with Alzheimer’s disease and suffering from escalating memory loss. When his now peaceful life with his daughter is threatened by new killings mimicking his murders of decades past, he sets his sights on one final kill before he loses his memory completely: the new serial killer he suspects is stalking his daughter – all told in a series of notes the narrator writes to himself throughout his psychological descent into dementia.

"He recognized me just as I recognized him." Well Go USA has released the official Us trailer for Shin-yeon Won's Memoir of a Murder, a serial killer -vs- serial killer thriller from Korea. The totally outlandish but totally Korean plot is about a former serial killer with Alzheimer's who fights to protect his daughter from her psychotic serial killer boyfriend. Yeah, that actually sounds cool, right? The cast includes Sol Kyung-Gu, Kim Nam-Gil, and Kim Seol-Hyun. From the looks of it, this is going to be as fun to watch as it is scary, with serial killers lurking everywhere. I'm actually curious about checking this out, even if the title reminds me a bit too much of Bong Joon-ho's Memories of Murder, which is a fantastic film itself. Check it. Here's the official Us trailer (+ poster) for Won Shin-yeon's Memoir of a Murder, in high def on Apple: Byeong-soo,...

A number of Sound On Sight editors and contributors are geographically fortunate enough to make the Fantasia Film Festival an annual must-attend event. I have never been to the festival, but have followed it from afar since it landed on my radar years ago when a well-received short film I had a major acting role in called My Sweet Satan, played there.
This year’s lineup of films strikes me as substantially more intriguing than the programs of the last couple of years. Given Fantasia’s staggering breadth of programming spread across multiple weeks, the challenge is in trying to narrow a ‘most anticipated’ list down to just five films. My picks, in alphabetical order, are as follows.
****
Among the Living

Chicago – What’s more depressing than a Hollywood blockbuster regurgitating cliches? A foreign film clearly inspired by those cliches, that’s what. Shin-yeon Won’s 2007 Korean thriller “Seven Days” fuses the worst stylistic excesses of Michael Bay and Tony Scott with the plot of a particularly ludicrous “CSI” episode. An American remake would not only be unnecessary, but throughly redundant.
The film’s biggest selling point for American audiences is its leading lady, Yunjin Kim, best known as Sun Kwon on “Lost.” Kim was a last-minute addition to the project after the original star quit, and her presence will undoubtedly make this picture somewhat of a curiosity piece, though it certainly won’t cheer up “Lost” fans already reeling from disappointment caused by the recent Emmy Awards snubbing. Though Kim is featured in nearly every scene, she can barely keep up with the jittery camerawork and frantic editing that routinely obscure her performance.
