The Santa Barbara Film Festival unveiled winners for its 37th edition on Saturday morning, bestowing its Audience Choice award to the Irish-language film Róise and Frank.
Juried winners at this year’s festival include Jon-Sesrie Goff’s After Sherman as Best Documentary, and Shawkat Amin Korki’s The Exam (Ezmûn) winning the Jeffrey C. Barbakow Award for best international feature film.
Róise and Frank (Mo ghrá buan), directed by Rachael Moriarty and Peter Murphy, centers on Róise (Brid Ni Neachtain), a widow in mourning who befriends a dog who just might be her late husband reincarnated. The pic earlier this week screened at the Dublin Film Festival where it won the Best Ensemble award.
Overall, this year’s in-person festival attracted 200 films from 54 countries along with its usual A-list of panel galas celebrating the year’s best in film – a traditional stop on the awards circuit. This year included Q...

In this ingenious satirical thriller, humiliated traders meet online to settle their uncertain futures for good
The morose dissatisfaction of Ireland’s newly impoverished Celtic tigers is satirised in this interesting first feature from writer-directors Rachel Moriarty and Peter Murphy. It’s a violent futurist thriller with hints of David Fincher’s Fight Club and Géla Babluani’s cult Russian-roulette nightmare 13 (Tzameti). Killian Scott plays Harry, a young guy who has grown used to the good life in the financial world; being laid off post-slump introduced him to the humiliation of not having much money. But his cringing beta-male friend Vernon (John Bradley) has invented an internet game called Trading; individuals who can’t bear the thought of not being rich must sell everything, put all their money in a bag and challenge other individuals to meet on a patch of wasteground for a bareknuckle fight to the death; the...

It is all change for Dublin as the city’s 10-day festival launches a new programme, new sponsors and a new general manager.
The Audi Dublin International Film Festival (Feb 18-28) has announced a solid line-up of local and international titles as well as big-name guests.
But behind the scenes, the festival has been carefully manoeuvring its way through a period of transition as it aims to build for the future.
Car manufacturers Audi have replaced Jameson as title sponsors, while beer brand Peroni and Dublin department store Arnotts have also come aboard.
Dublin also has a new general manager, Sian Cunningham, who worked in the arts for more than 15 years prior to this appointment, most notably as general manager with Dance Ireland for nine years.
An eclectic group of filmmakers and stars were announced at today’s programme launch, joining previously named guests Angela Lansbury and Neil Jordan.
They include British director Ben Wheatley, who is bringing...

After debuting to great praise at last year’s Galway Film Fleadh, the first trailer for Rachael Moriarty and Peter Murphy’s Traders has come our way, and there is a lot to like about this bloody, high concept thriller. Taking it’s cue from the banking crisis and spinning it off in a gloriously over the top way with two former financial brokers (Love/Hate’s Killian Scott and Game of Thrones’ John Bradley) masterminding a diabolical, web based get rich scheme where two strangers convert all of their money and assets into cold hard cash, put their entire worth in a green sports bag, and fight each other to death in a remote location. The winner buries the loser and walks away twice as rich as when he started. Of course, things only get worse from there. Traders hits Irish shores on March 11th.
