William J. Sutton
William J. Sutton was a military officer who rose to command the U.S.
Army Reserve as a major general. In 1970, he received the Civil Affairs
Association annual award, which recognizes persons who have made
outstanding contributions to national defense. Under his command, the
Army Reserve opened the Reserve Officers Training Corps to women in
1972. He also directed Reserve recruiters to increase the number of
women in the Army Reserve.
