Dr Sales has closed a deal with Walter Presents on the popular drama series “Carmen Curlers.” The company has picked up the show for the U.K. and Ireland, as well as taking North American rights for PBS Masterpiece.
Based on true events and kick-starting in the 1960s, the show chronicles the invention of the electric curler in Denmark. It also focuses on its female workers, making their own money for the first time in their lives, and societal changes, already lurking around the corner.
“I am absolutely delighted to welcome ‘Carmen Curlers’ in the Walter Presents collection of the very best international drama,” says executive director Walter Iuzzolino, calling it “a warm, incisive, emotionally absorbing piece with a gorgeous vintage aesthetic and a truly remarkable script.”
“I was not surprised to hear that it was such a massive hit in Denmark: a wonderful alternative to Nordic crime, this show...

Exploding in Danish pubcaster Dr’s prime time slot on Sunday Oct. 2, “Carmen Curlers” attracted more viewers for Episode 2 than a political debate with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in the run-up to general elections, according to the Nordisk Film & TV Fond Newsletter.
Little wonder. Politicians promise to better their country. Inspired by the true story of Dane Arne Byborg’s launch of electric hair curlers, “Carmen Curlers,” set over 1963-69, shows how it really happened, as women began to enter the workforce and earn their own money and independence.
The two events are embodied by the series’ lead: Axel Byvang, played by Morten Hee Andersen (“Ride Upon the Storm”), who bears a striking resemblance to the real life early-thirties Byborg, and farmer’s wife Birthe Windfeld.
In the series’ early going, Axel happens on a newspaper advert appealing for financing backing for a new electric hair curler. Allowing...

Projects participated in the Nordic festival’s works in progress event.
Ruben Ostlund got buyers and festival programmers hopping with excitement in Goteborg as he presented the first footage from his forthcoming fifth feature The Square during the festival’s work in progress pitches.
Ostlund screened about seven minutes from one scene of the new film, during which a controversial performance artist (played by Terry Notary) makes guests at a black-tie art gala very uncomfortable. “You know I love awkward situations,” the director said.
Goteborg’s audience of industry experts commented that they were impressed by the confidence of the unnerving scene, which showed Ostlund working on a bigger scale even than his last hit, Force Majeure.
At a festival session later for the public, Ostlund previewed a second clip from the film, in which a museum director (Claes Bang) delivers a self-centered video apology to a boy he had accused of being a thief.

Paris-based transmedia event Cross Video Days opened its doors for the fourth time last week to present some 35 multi-platform projects from across Europe.
The two-day event — this year unfolding in the historic Warehouse and General Stores exhibition and industrial park on the outskirts of Paris — combined a pitching market with a series of conferences on the latest developments in the cross-media domain.
”Some 350 projects from 34 countries were submitted,” said Bruno Smadja, founding CEO of MobilEvent, the body behind the meeting.
Pitched projects ranged from Danish, online sci-fi game and drama Cloud Chamber, to the timely, Belgian web-doc Geek Politics, examining the world of hackers; to the German pre-school targeted, educational work Milli, about a snail discovering the world.
“Our philosophy from the start has been to present a real mix, so we’ve got youth-focused projects, politically engaged...
