The German government has issued a clear call for guarantees of diversity in the areas of culture and media in the ongoing Ttip free trade negotiations between the European Union (EU) and the Us.
Germany’s Economics and Culture Ministers Sigmar Gabriel and Monika Grütters joined forces to issue a position paper demanding that the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (Ttip) agreement “not contain any regulations which are likely to impair the diversity of culture and media in Germany”.
“The protection of cultural diversity and the diversity of opinion and media must also be guaranteed when faced with the asymmetry of the markets in the Internet sector,” the position paper’s authors stated.
“While the dominance of large Us companies in the Internet and the audiovisual area represents a challenge for the cultural and media diversity in Europe, this is not the case in the other direction with respect to the low market share of European companies...

Proposals include an end to “unjustified geo-blocking” and a modernisation of copyright law.
The European Commission today revealed plans for a “digital single market” - a unified and borderless regulatory framework for the internet across Europe.
A total of 16 initiatives for the Digital Single Market (Dsm) strategy were unveiled in Brussels this morning by Commissioner Andrus Ansip, vp of the Dsm, and Günther Oettinger, Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society.
Of particular interest to the audiovisual industry were the references made to this sector in the proposals ¨to end unjustified geo-blocking¨ and the introduction of ¨a modern, more European copyright law”.
¨One of the aims of the copyright modernisation is to facilitate the licensing of rights for online distribution of audiovisual content,¨ the Commission declared.
¨Being able to legally access content online cross-border will help deal with geo-blocking concerns, while respecting the value of rights in the audiovisual sector. The financing of the audiovisual sector widely relies...

The United Arab Emirates has the largest per capita carbon footprint of any country in the world, contains artificial islands, a ski dome in the middle of the desert, and will soon boast the first air-conditioned beach. In general, the country relies on a cheap supply of oil for its continued growth. Yet the International Renewable Energy Association, founded in January as a counterbalance to the International Energy Agency and the International Atomic Energy Agency, announced today that it will make its home in... Abu Dhabi.
The city beat Bonn, Germany and Vienna, Austria, with German environment minister Sigmar Gabriel claiming that the solution avoided "an artificially charged north-south division" between the two countries. The real reason for Irena's pick, though, probably has something to do with Abu Dhabi's offer to cover the cost of the headquarters and launch a major publicity campaign--an offer likely made possible by Abu Dhabi's...

BERLIN -- German school kids are getting a dose of Al Gore with their 3Rs.
In a cooperation between the German environmental ministry and Paramount Pictures, 6,000 German schools next week will receive a free DVD of Al Gore's Oscar-winning documentary "An Inconvenient Truth".
Similar actions in the U.S. have been met with opposition from some school associations but not so in Germany, where environmental minister Sigmar Gabriel has had nothing but praise for the film.
On March 18, German multiplex operator CinemaxX will hold a series of matinee screenings of "An Inconvenient Truth" for school classes at theaters in 27 cities across the country.
Paramount will release the film on DVD in Germany on March 29th.
