The punky goth girl Emily the Strange is getting an animated film adaptation at Amazon Studios. The character was created by skateboarder Rob Reger back in the '90s as an advertising mascot for his clothing company, Cosmic Debris. She first appeared on Santa Cruz skateboards and stickers of her were distributed at concerts, record stores, and skateboard shops.
From there, the character just exploded in popularity, and she was featured in books, comic books, toys, and more. Years ago Chloe Moretz was set to play the character in a live-action movie, but nothing ever came of that. Now we have this animated film to look forward to.
I personally like the idea of seeing an animated film based on the character more than a live action film. It will be able to keep that fun style, authenticity, and edginess that fans love about the character.

For over past eight years there’s been talk now and then of an Emily the Strange movie. The comic book adaptation seemed most plausible when Chloë Grace Moretz (Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising) signed up to play the titular character (created by Rob Reger). The Moretz-led origin story was going to explain “how she came to gain her abilities that […]

Although Chloe Moretz signed on to play the title role back in 2010 , things have been relatively quiet on the Emily the Strange movie front. The project appears to be gaining some momentum today, however, as The Wrap reports that Kealan O'Rourke has been brought aboard to rewrite the screenplay. Melissa Wallack provided the previous draft. First started as an iconic image in 1991 and used to promote a clothing line from Cosmic Debris, Emily the Strange has developed a back story through a series of Dark Horse comics, which have been published since 2001. Two weeks from now Sdcc 2013 will be winding down, so are there enough horror offerings to entice attendees back to the show for Day 4 (July 21)? With "Supernatural" kicking things off bright and early, we say, "Yes!"
Also on the schedule for Sunday (traditionally the family-themed day of the event) are "Under the Dome," an update on the adaptation of George R.R. Martin's werewolf/Pi/serial killer mashup novella The Skin Trade, a chance to build your own monster, surviving in a post-apocalyptic world, a Neil Gaiman Spotlight panel, a look at what's coming from Diamond Select Toys, a how-to on creating suspenseful, exciting, anxiety-inducing stories, and per usual, a screening of "Buffy the Musical: Once More with Feeling" to close things out.
Since the horror offerings are so light, we've expanded our Day 4 highlights list to cover such topics as the future of sci-fi novels, the 50th anniversary of "Doctor Who,...

Sunday July 15th is the last day of Comic-Con 2012, and most of us will be completely worn out looking like Spider-Man in the image above. Chances are he's asleep under that mask. Sunday has always been a cool down day for us, we kind of just try to relax a little bit more and enjoy it. That doesn't mean their isn't anything to see or do though!
We've got a Fringe screening and Q&A, Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer 20th Anniversary, Sons of Anarchy, the annual Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical screening, and more! I've always wanted to go the Buffy musical sing-a-long, but am usually trying to leave San Diego before it starts.
Just a little reminder, we will be having our annual GeekTyrant meet up this year to meet our readers, which is something we always enjoy doing! That will take place on Wednesday night, and...

Back in September, we told you that Chloe Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass, Let Me In) was cast to star as the titular character in Universal Pictures’ big-screen adaptation of Emily the Strange. The project had been under development since 2008 by Dark Horse Entertainment and now, Universal has found the talent to pen the script.
According to THR, Melisa Wallack, the scribe of Relativity’s Snow White film, has been tapped to adapt the cult-pop-culture-icon Emily the Strange for Universal. Though the story line for the film is pretty hush-hush, “the aim is to tell the origin of the punk and gothic figure and how she comes to gain her abilities that fuse technology and imagination. The story will also focus on her relationship with four cats: troublemaker Sabbath, schemer Nee-Chee, imaginative Miles and leader Mystery.”

Who is Emily the Strange? I'll let the front page of emilystrange.com fill you in with some knowledge. Emily's not your average thirteen year-old-girl. Pink is her worst nightmare...she wears the same black dress every day. She loves math and science. Her best friends are her four Black Cats! She's into old rock & punk, but also digs newer bands like My Chemical Romance (Btw, Gerard Way is featured in her Dark Horse comic book, "Revenge at Last!") Emily is so anticool she's cool... a subculture of one, and a follower of no one but herself. Looks like I have a new reason to bust out my black nail polish again! Boo yah! Melisa Wallack, who wrote the script that became Relativity’s high-profile Snow White project, has been drafted by Universal to pen Emily the Strange. The lead of the American remale of Let Me In takes on the first movie ever adapted from a sticker. A sticker.
Universal acquired the rights to adapt 'Emily' (originally created by skater Rob Reger Santa Cruz in the early 1990s. As a Sticker passed out free at concerts. Reger is now filthy rich because of Emily. A millionaire, no doubt, who no longer attends grungy Santa cruz hippy fests with the common people.) Emily the Strange merchandise, t-shirts, you-name-it are a luctrative Hot Topic business, and the film industry didn't want to miss out on all that money.
Dark Horse Entertainment has been trying to get this off the ground since 2008. There are no writers or directors attached (really, Hollywood? You cast before you even have a fucking script??) What they Do know is that they'll be telling of Emily's origins, and of course her four kitties Sabbath, Nee -Chee,...

Welcome one and welcome all to another gripping installment of The Second Edition. Rounding up this week’s “below the fold” stories, we have a further update on Bill and Ted 3, news on one of cinema’s greatest gangster flicks Ever, Goodfellas and it looks like Hit-Girl is going from Kick-Ass to another deliciously dark comicbook!
So let’s get started with this week’s roundup:
Alex Winter talks Bill & Ted 3
You may recall a story we ran earlier this week regarding the much talked about, long awaited return to the world of Wyld Stallyns, Bill & Ted 3. Keanu Reeves spoke to MTV about the possibility of a third installment and said Alex Winter plus writers Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon were all on board for a third outing.

Proving once again that Chloe Moretz is the "it" girl of the moment, it's being reported that she will portray the titular Emily in an adaptation of the popular Emily the Strange comic book series. After stealing scenes in Kick-Ass earlier this year, this seems like a natural career progression for her. Emily the Strange follows the life of an independent-minded goth-looking 13 year-old girl and her four black cats. Franchise creator Rob Reger will produce the film and had this to say about Moretz: "When I first met Chloe I knew I had found my Emily. She really identifies and understands the character, and has what it takes to bring her to life." With Moretz set to be seen in Let Me In next month and in Martin Scorsese's Hugo Cabret next year, she's sure to gain even more attention, so a starring vehicle like this is only natural for her to pursue.

Chloe Moretz made quite the name for herself when she burst onto the screen as Hit-Girl in this year's "Kick-Ass," but the young actress' comic book ambitions aren't stopping there.
According to Deadline, Moretz has agreed to take on the title role in "Emily The Strange," based on the popular character created by Rob Reger and his company Cosmic Debris in 1993. Dark Horse's Mike Richardson is producing the Universal Pictures film alongside executive producers Reger and Keith Goldberg.
"When I first met Chloe I knew I found my Emily," Reger said of Moretz's casting. "She really identifies and understands the character, and has what it takes to bring her to life."

Everyone’s favorite pre-teen assassin (and soon to be everyone’s favorite undead immortal) Chloe Moretz has just signed on for her next off-kilter role. Moretz is attached to play Emily the Strange in Universal Pictures’ adaptation of the character created by Rob Reger way back in 1993. If you haven’t set foot in a Hot Topic store for the last decade or so, you are probably unfamiliar with the character. Here’s what you need to know about Emily – she’s strange, she likes to be alone, and she enjoys the company of cats. She sounds oddly like most film bloggers I know. But, beyond that, it’s hard to say just what an Emily film will be like. Will she be saving homeless kitties? Fighting off popular girls? Channeling Daria? Well, that last one is a bit of a given, but otherwise, all bets are off.

This is good news for sure! Chloe Moretz (Hit-Girl in "Kick-Ass") will be playing the title character in Universal's adaptation of the Dark Horse comic "Emily The Strange," which Rob Reger created.
Thats pretty much all we know about the project at this stage. Plot details are kept under wraps, but I heard Emily's cats will be in action as well. Reger created the "Emily The Strange" franchise in the '90s.
As for Moretz, she's the coolest young actress around. I had the chance to chat with her earlier this year, and I've seldomly met someone this young who's also an absolute professional in the movie business.

With Hit Girl still fresh in our minds and her startling turn in Let Me In coming in just a few weeks, Chloe Moretz is still fairly beloved as the young actress capable of the most difficult, disturbing, and frankly grown-up roles Hollywood can throw at her. I've got a nasty feeling, though, that some backlash is going to start up soon, as Moretz seemingly can't stop being cast in every "spooky little girl" role up for grabs. Next up, according to Deadline, is Emily the Strange, Dark Horse Entertainment and Universal Pictures' adaptation of the graphic novel, clothing and apparel empire. The image of Emily is instantly familiar whether or not you know anything about the character itself-- designed by Rob Reger and his Cosmic Debris company in 1993, Emily has appeared on stickers, T-shirts and eventually a comics series ever since. She's doesn't exactly seem like the kind...

Work is definitely good for teen actress Chloe Moretz, especially since she's grabbed the lead role in "Emily The Strange". Chloe Moretz is adding another iconic role to her already crowded career, signing on to play the title character in Universal’s take on counterculture figure Emily the Strange. After the rescuing the rights from Fox, where it was largely Emily the stagnant, Dark Horse Entertainment has been trying to get a film based on the character together for a couple of years now after making a big announcement in 2008 and raising more awareness at that year's Comic-Con. And, coincidentally, the first time Moretz really considered the role was at this year’s event, where she met Emily’s creator, skateboarder Rob Reger. While Reger didn’t plan for Emily to become such a smash hit with the low-key Goth/Hot Topic crowd (she was originally just one of lots of designs he was printing to adorn stickers, boards and T-shirts back in the early 90s), the image caught on...

Today, Sept. 23, is the birthday of 13-year old goth punk Emily the Strange, according to her website. She received a pretty cool birthday present: a movie is being made about her and she'll be played by current cool girl actress Chloe Moretz (Kick-***/Diary of a Wimpy Kid). The exact storyline is unclear but it's likely an origin story about Emily and her four cats Mystery, Sabbath, Nee-Chee and Imaginative Miles. She initially appeared on a series of stickers to promote Cosmic Debris, a clothing line founded by skateboarder Rob Reger.
