Despite signing exciting Dutch forward Jeremain Lens earlier this week, Sunderland seem keen to further bolster their attacking options, having been linked with young Manchester United winger Adnan Januzaj.
Rumours of the 20 year old’s departure have emerged as a result of his slide down the United pecking order, with Sunderland the bookies’ favourite among a gaggle of suitors including Everton and Real Sociedad.
The young Belgian shone during David Moyes’ brief reign at Old Trafford, but seems to have fallen out of favour under Louis van Gaal. Despite being given the number 11 shirt last worn by Ryan Giggs, he was forced to oversee much of the 2014/15 season from the bench, rarely making an impression in the starting line-up.
Sunderland fans will be more familiar with Januzaj than most. The winger scored two goals at the Stadium of Light in 2013, turning Craig Gardner’s opener into nothing more than a footnote.

West Brom manager Pepe Mel is looking to make a late night bid for Sunderland’s Craig Gardner.
Reports are circulating that the club may be looking to take the midfielder on loan until the end of the season. However, it seems much more likely that any deal will be a permanent transfer.
Pepe Mel is looking to strengthen his squad as they are set to face a relegation fight in the next few months and the Spaniard sees Gardner as a perfect addition to his midfield options.
The 27 year old has been at Sunderland since 2011 and has made 75 appearances for the Black Cats, netting 11 goals. He has been left somewhat in the cold though since the arrival of Gus Poyet as manager, generally only making substitute appearances.

Sunderland have not beaten Manchester United since they last met in the League Cup over 13 years ago. Kevin Phillips’s extra time penalty took the Black Cats into quarter-finals in November 2000 with Red Devils goalscorer Dwight Yorke being sent off.
United have since won 16 of the 20 subsequent encounters that have all come in the Premier League and the other four were drawn. The Black Cats will have home advantage first in this two-legged tie with the winners to face either West Ham United or Manchester City at Wembley.
Gus Poyet has had defensive injuries worrying him, but despite Sunderland’s struggle in the league they remain in both domestic cup competitions. The basement club of the English top flight will be targeting an upset in this first leg similar to their shock win over City in November.

Sunderland will have to settle for just a single point this Christmas as they were left frustrated by a quiet Norwich side at the Stadium of Light.
The Black Cats failed to take advantage of almost a dozen decent chances but the sending off of Wes Brown at the end took away any chance of yet another stoppage time goal this season.
Head Coach Gus Poyet decided to field the XI that ended the midweek Capital One Cup clash with Chelsea, which ultimately seen Sunderland proceed to the final four. Ki Sung-Yeung and Fabio Borini, who both scored after coming off the bench on Tuesday, came in for Adam Johnson and Craig Gardner. Phil Bardsley replaced Andrea Dossena at left back.
There were no major talking points in the first half. Sunderland perhaps looked the most likely to score but any opportunity was left too late or taken too quick.

Eden Hazard stole the show as Chelsea remained in second place in the Premier League following an action packed game at The Stadium of Light which ended 4-3 to the visitors, but it was a mad two minutes for Phil Bardsley that will no doubt have the fans and Head Coach Gus Poyet talking.
Sunderland tried to take advantage of Chelsea’s poor start numerous times in the opening ten minutes, but it was the result of a Craig Gardner free kick that opened the scoring. The shot fired straight at the Chelsea wall, but Jack Colback timely found the USA international Altidore before firing home his first Premier League goal for Sunderland after 14 minutes.

On January 21st 2012, Sunderland defeated Premier League surprise package Swansea City 2-0 at The Stadium Of Light thanks to spectacular goals from Stephane Sessegnon and Craig Gardner. Simon Mignolet of course kept a clean sheet, much thanks to the rock in defence in the form of former England defender Wes Brown.
Unfortunately, this was the last time Brown was to kick a ball in a full competitive match for 22 months, which is a whopping spell on the sidelines for anyone, yet alone a top flight professional footballer. Brown played and scored in a pre season tournament match against Tottenham Hotspur in Hong Kong in July of this year, but unfortunately picked up a different injury on the back of the 3-1 win.

Manchester United winger Adnan Januzaj was the difference as the Premier League holders came from behind to take all three points against a much-improved Sunderland.
The hosts took a deserved lead inside of five minutes through midfielder Craig Gardner. United defender Phil Jones dealt with a cross put in by Emanuele Giaccherini, but Jones’ pass to Vidic bounced off the Serb and fell to Gardner in the box who finished with aplomb into the bottom corner.
Nani may have felt he should have equalised minutes later, after hitting a fierce strike just past the post, and putting another chance wide after being unmarked inside the area from a free kick.
Against the run of play, Sunderland were inches away from doubling their lead. Giaccherini headed goalwards from a cross which was well saved by United ‘keeper David De Gea.

Sunderland drew with Southampton 1-1 in the Barclays Premier League on Saturday afternoon at the St Mary’s Stadium.
Emanuele Giaccherini gave the Black Cats an early lead but late on Jose Fonte poked the ball past Westwood to give the Saints a point.
There was a shocking change in the Sunderland side as Craig Gardner replaced the ever-promising Cabral in the centre of midfield and it appeared to be the big decider.
Moment of madness or moment of Genius?
The game got off to a flyer for Sunderland as from an early corner, sent in by Sebastian Larsson, Giaccherini leaned down low to twist his header in.
Though the dream start for Paolo Di Canio was nearly wiped away instantly, The Saints sent a teasing ball through which, ‘man-of-the-moment’, Ricky Lambert tapped in. Unfortunately for the England international, it was ruled out for offside.

Sunderland have confirmed on the loan signing of defender Ondrej Celustka from Turkish side Trabzonspor.

Di Canio’s efforts to bring in a full-back had been fruitless till this point, with the newspapers reporting moves for Argentinian Gino Peruzzi and Aly Cissokho had both failed.

Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio has stated an English central-midfielder is top of his shopping list this month, in an interview with the Sunderland Echo.
Di Canio has been the busiest manager in the Premier League this summer bringing in nine new faces to the first team squad as he continues his summer ‘revolution’.
Speaking to the Echo, the Italian said, “What’s most important to me is the need to get a key player in central midfield, someone who’s English,”
“He needs to be English, with a physical presence, English, because he needs to know English football inside out, and also a player with very good quality, because we want to play attractive football which gets good results.”
A player that could be on the cards for the Black Cats is the Tottenham midfielder, Tom Huddlestone.

Tottenham Hotspur welcome Sunderland to White Hart Lane this afternoon for what could be a pivotal game in the race for Champions League football. Spurs currently are fifth, one point behind Arsenal and with an inferior goal difference going into today’s game. Only a victory for Tottenham and Arsenal failing to beat Newcastle will see Andre Villas-Boas achieve his goal of taking Spurs back into Europe’s elite.
Tottenham vs Spurs kicks-off at 4pm and will be screened live on Sky Sports 2 on UK Television. Here’s the team news ahead of the game…
Spurs are still without long-term absentees William Gallas (calf), Younes Kaboul (thigh) and Brazilian midfielder Sandro (knee). Left full-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto could however return after recovering from the knee injury that saw him miss last weekend’s win at Stoke. He has trained with the team ahead of this final day clash and could be declared fit to start.

Before Luis Suarez bagged a well-earned equalizer for Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool I sat hunched in my chair, worried that I’d seen this match a thousand times before, and a third league defeat was sure to come. A little pessimistic, sure, but last season’s goal scoring deficiency still lingers, perpetuated by the loaning of Andy Carroll and the lack of deadline day acquisitions.
Thankfully, however, the boys in red had other ideas. And rightly so. I think we played pretty well overall, controlling the game and creating plenty of opportunities. Swansea’s 100% record in the Premier League season will be put to the test as they host Martin O’Neill’s Sunderland at the Liberty Stadium this afternoon.
The home team have exceeded all expectations with a maximum six points notched up after their opening two games against Qpr and West Ham but today’s fixture could be a trickier task for Michael Laudrup’s team.
Whilst it’s early days for Swansea, the more direct style that has been introduced by the Dane is showing some real promise. Eight goals scored already far surpasses Swansea’s record this time last season where not a single goal was scored after their first four outings.
Sunderland will be well rested after their game against Reading was called off last week due to a waterlogged pitch however new signings Adam Johnson, Steven Fletcher and Louis Saha were given some game time together...
