Due to his father's military career Warren's family moved often during his childhood; having lived in Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, Nova Scotia and British Columbia.
Warren attended Immaculata High School in Ottawa. During his high school years he discovered theatre, and particularly improvistion. He was a member of the school's improv team and participated in the National Improv Olympics at the Great Canadian Theatre Company. Famed singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette was on the junior improv team while Warren was on the senior improv team, and both took part in many of the school's talent shows.
Attending Carleton University, he ended up completing a combined honours major in English Language and Literature and Film Studies. While a student he served for two years as the President of the English Literature Society, and for a year was co-editor of the Carleton Art Review with poet rob mclennan. Warren worked at an ice cream shop while attended university, writing poetry, running reading series, organizing poetry events, and publishing himself and others through his chapbook publishing imprint POOKA PRESS. Struggling to make a living, one cold winter, Warren decided to hop on a Greyhound bus to travel across the country, non-stop, to reach British Columbia where his family had resettled. He lived in his parents' basement, while working as a Starbucks' barista and later bartender, until deciding to further his education by going to the Vancouver Film School for their film foundations program.
While still in film school, Warren married Nancy McLean, and soon afterwards together they were raising their family of three children. Separating a decade later, they have remained close friends.
