In Josh Radnor’s charming sophomore feature, Liberal Arts, the actor/director/writer recognizes that many adult males in their mid-thirties glide through their lives half awake, half confused, yearning for the freedom and potential of their college days. Here, Radnor sends himself back to his actual alma mater on a visit to an old friend, but his attention is diverted when he meets a 19-year-old wise beyond her years, leading to much contemplation about his own life. Though tonally topsy-turvy, the film amiably explores the pitfalls and blessings of nostalgia and receptivity thanks to Radnor’s amusing script and a pair of brilliantly exposed performances by Elizabeth Olsen and Richard Jenkins.
Burying his nose in books to block out the world around him, Jesse Fisher (Radnor) has been coasting by as a New York City school guidance counselor with no real aim for his own life. When he’s...

A New Yorker returns to his old midwestern campus in Josh Radnor's amusing meditation on literature and learning
Josh Radnor, probably best known for his continuing role in the TV sitcom How I Met Your Mother, is not only the writer-director of the semi-autobiographical Liberal Arts, but he also plays its main character, Jesse Fisher, a 35-year-old New Yorker experiencing some sort of midlife crisis. It's a simple film in its dramatic construction but complex in the ideas, experiences and emotions it plays on and is the most intelligent, truthful movie about literature, higher education and the life of the mind since the Curtis Hanson film of Michael Chabon's novel Wonder Boys a dozen years ago.
The film's title refers to the ideal form of wide-ranging, interdisciplinary university education offered by prestigious liberal arts colleges that shape inquiring minds and supposedly send their owners out into the world...

Your enjoyment of Josh Radnor’s Liberal Arts will depend almost entirely on how much pretension you can take in one sitting. Some will find the film’s dense, overly articulate writing style, intellectual discussions about academia, and earnest celebration of classical music delightfully refreshing, while others will no doubt stand up at the half-hour mark, violently toss their popcorn to the ground, shout “I’ve had enough of these elitist pricks!” and storm out of the theatre in a huff. For this film, both seem like perfectly reasonable responses.
I myself fall somewhere in the middle, admiring Radnor’s obvious, if sometimes overbearing, passion for cerebral introspection, while also being able to chuckle at the unintentional ways Radnor’s script tiptoes into self-parody. At the point where the two main characters are writing each other letters, reciting phrases like “as the music began to swell, I suddenly realized I...

Liberal Arts is the second film from Josh Radnor who, as in his previous effort Happythankyoumoreplease, wrote, directed, and stars. Liberal Arts has its pleasures and it.s never dull, but It fades from memory quickly, becoming almost indistinguishable from the better films it inevitably reminds me of, and dissolves into the sort of generic sweetness I associate with this type of seriocomic indy film. Radnor plays 35-year old Jesse Fisher, newly single, uninspired by his job as an admissions officer at a New York City college, and worried that his best days are behind him. But no matter how much he buries his head in a book, life keeps pulling Jesse back. When his favorite college professor Peter Hoberg (Richard Jenkins) invites him to his alma mater to speak at his retirement dinner, Jesse jumps at the opportunity. He is prepared for the nostalgia of the dining halls and dorm rooms,...

Josh Radnor’s Liberal Arts came to the UK as part of Sundance London earlier this year, where I saw it and instantly fell in love with it. It’s one of the finest dramatic comedies of the year, balancing the comedy and the drama brilliantly, and I can’t wait to see it again when it comes out here next weekend.
We caught a new UK trailer for the film earlier this month, and now two new clips have been released, via digital spy and Empire, the first of which sees Radnor opposite co-star Elizabeth Olsen debating the merits of Twilight and fiction like it.

Josh Radnor's Liberal Arts, the writer/director/actor's follow-up to 2010's Happythankyoumoreplease, tickled crowds at Sundance London last year and should repeat the trick when it gets a UK cinema release next week. For one thing, as this new clip shows, it's got Allison Janney in it; a fact that automatically earns it an Ma (Hons) in general excellence. brightcove.createExperiences(); Janney plays the hard-bitten English tenured professor in the small liberal arts college once attended by Jesse Fisher, Radnor's 30-something admissions professor. Acutely aware of his advancing years but still smitten like a teenager, Fisher fawns on his old don. In return, she treats him with very un-c.J. Cregg-like disdain. Will they bond over Stendhal or just catch up on old times? On this evidence, probably neither. Throw Elizabeth Olsen's sassy sophomore and a mentor played with wry weariness by Richard Jenkins into the mix, and...

Filled with romance and humour, writer, director and star Josh Radnor (How I Met Your Mother) presents Liberal Arts. Featuring star-studded cast including rising star Elizabeth Olsen, Academy Award ® nominee Richard Jenkins and Emmy Award ® winner Allison Janney, the film is a heart-warming reminder that sometimes students make the best teachers.
The story follows newly single 35-year-old Jesse Fisher. Uninspired by his job and worried that his best days are behind him, no matter how much he buries his head in a book life keeps pulling him back.

Actor Josh Radnor is mostly known as hopeless romantic Ted Mosby on the hit show, "How I Met Your Mother," though he garnered much more deserved attention for his first feature, "HappyThankYou-MorePlease" (not a typo, I promise), which won the Audience Award for Drama at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. The central theme in "Htymp" is the hardships of falling in love as an adult. Life would certainly be so much more pleasant if finding "the one" was as easy as movies make it seem to be, no?
Echoing "Htymp," Radnor carries on the "love sucks" theme in his second feature, "Liberal Arts." He plays Jesse Fisher, an admissions officer at what appears to be a community college in New York; we know it's a small school because every prospective student he meets to discuss their educational direction seems to care nothing about it. The only exciting thing in Fisher's current...

Editor’s note: Liberal Arts opens in limited release this Friday (just in time for back-to-school!), so please enjoy our Sundance review of the film, originally published on January 23, 2012. Triple threat Josh Radnor‘s first feature, happythankyoumoreplease, debuted at Sundance in 2010, hitting big with the crowds and ultimately winning the Audience Award. The film was written and directed by Radnor, who also starred in it as a disaffected twentysomething struggling to make meaningful connections with others in big, bad New York City. Radnor’s latest outing, Liberal Arts, is written and directed by Radnor, and stars the multi-hyphenate as– well, you probably know the rest. But while happythankyoumoreplease was perhaps too much of a classic first feature – complete with overly precious touches and too much reliance on the magic of coincidence and not enough emphasis on the sort of things that actually happen in the real world – Liberal Arts sees Radnor and his craft maturing wonderfully, which...

For those of you looking for a cute sentimental romance film, Liberal Arts might just be what you're looking for. The movie was directed by How I Met You Mother's Josh Radnor, who co-stars along side Elizabeth Olsen, Richard Jenkins, Zac Efron, and Allison Janney.
The story centers on Jesse Fisher (Radnor), a 35-year-old who works in the admissions department of a New York university. When he returns to Ohio to speak at his former professor's (Jenkins) retirement, he meets Zibby (Olsen), a 19-year-old sophomore with whom he feels a genuine connection. They find common ground in a love of classical music, and though Jesse heads back to New York, they continue their relationship through a series of hand-written letters.
Ben saw the movie up at Sundance and had this to say in his review, "Truth be told, though, this film belongs to Radnor and Olsen, both giving aggressively good...

With just over a month until Liberal Arts hits theaters, we were beginning to wonder when we would finally get to see a trailer for Josh Radnor‘s second directorial feature. Well today, we finally have it, courtesy of The Film Stage.

Now the writer/director has already returned for his follow-up and one that is getting better notices. Liberal Arts premiered at Sundance this year and after being picked up by IFC Films, it’s headed to theaters this fall.
We’ve got the first trailer for the dramedy today, which features Radnor in the lead opposite Sundance starlet Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene). He plays a 35-year old bookworm who goes back to his old college campus and runs into a great ensemble, including Richard Jenkins, Allison Janney, John Magaro, Elizabeth Reaser and even Zac Efron. At Park City this year we enjoyed it more than his debut, saying it was full of delightful moments and now one can see the first trailer via international distributors Icon below.

The Sundance Institute and The O2 announced today the programme of 14 narrative and documentary feature films that will make their UK premieres at the inaugural Sundance London festival, taking place at The O2 from 26-29 April. These films premiered in January at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah – the premier independent film festival in the United States.
“I welcome the opportunity to see how people in the UK experience these films,” said Robert Redford, President and Founder of Sundance Institute. “While they are American productions they speak to universal experiences and global challenges.”
He went on to add, “Sundance London also is the perfect opportunity to continue our long-time commitment to growing a broader international community around new voices and new perspectives.”

2012 will be the first year that Sundance comes to London and we here at HeyUGuys are very excited about it. It takes place 26th – 29th April and we’re hoping to be there to cover as much of the event as is possible.
Incase you’re not familiar with Sundance, it is a spin-off from the big Us event which takes place in Park City, Utah at the beginning of the year. In a nutshell, Sundance is a four-day festival that will include film screenings, live music performances, discussions, panels and other public cultural programming will be held 26 – 29 April, 2012 at The O2 in London. Robert Redford is due to open the festival with a discussion connecting film and music. ‘An Evening with Robert Redford and T Bone Burnett’ will be moderated by author and screenwriter Nick Hornby.

Last year "How I Met Your Mother" star Josh Radnor made his directorial debut with the fluffy, feel-good film HappyThankYouMorePlease, and while it pleased the audience, it wasn't exactly a home run with the critics. This time around, Radnor brings the same charm with Liberal Arts, but in a more mature package complete with witty writing and a perfect presentation of the struggles one endures in college as they begin to become an adult and also in their later years as they desperately try to hold on to their younger days. However, the film isn't completely a winner as it snobbishly attempts to be wiser than the audience. In Liberal Arts, Jesse Fisher (Radnor) gets invited back to his alma mater as one of his favorite professors (Richard Jenkins) invites him back to celebrate his retirement. In his visit, he meets Zibby (Elizabeth Olsen) the 19-year old daughter of one...

Following the debut of HappyThankYouMorePlease in 2010, Josh Radnor returns to Sundance with his second directorial feature, Liberal Arts. Written by, directed by, and starring the How I Met Your Mother actor, the film co-stars Elizabeth Olsen, Richard Jenkins, Zac Efron, and Allison Janney. I liked the movie quite a bit; it's one of the few true crowd pleasers I've seen at the festival so far. It's a good day for funny people, especially if your name is Tina Fey or Seth MacFarlane.
Fey's series, 30 Rock, was handed 22 Emmy nominations this morning, which stands as a record for a comedy series. She and Alec Baldwin were also nominated for acting awards. Plus, for the first time some of the other actors on NBC's laffer were recognized. Jane Krakowski, Jack McBrayer and Tracy Morgan all picked up supporting nominations.
MacFarlane's Family Guy was also nominated for best comedy series, the first time an animated show has cracked that category since The Flintstones in 1961. Two years ago MacFarlane decided to pull his show from contention in the animated series category to have it considered for best comedy.
Mad Men, the drama about the advertising world in the sixties, picked up 16 nominations in the drama categories, including a best actor nod for Jon Hamm. Hamm is also nominated as...
