“All this filming isn’t healthy,” says blind but perceptive Mrs. Stephens (Maxine Audley) late in Michael Powell’s resolutely disturbing Peeping Tom, and every aspect of the film’s rigorously self-reflexive construction seems to bear her out. From the opening shot of an opening eye, to the final shot of a blank screen swathed in black and blood-red gel lighting, Peeping Tom obsessively examines the social and psychological ramifications of overactive cinephilia. This situates Powell’s film as a direct precursor to later 1960s autocritiques along the lines of Federico Fellini’s 8½, Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blow-Up, and Haskell Wexler’s Medium Cool.
Powell and screenwriter Leo Marks originally wanted to make a film about Sigmund Freud and his theories, but word of John Huston’s upcoming Freud biopic put the kibosh on those plans. So instead they came up with the story of Mark Lewis (Carl Boehm), who works...

On Tuesday, a new development was added to the decades-long mystery surrounding the disappearance of a Vatican schoolgirl, as the missing girl’s brother met with a Vatican investigator authorized by Pope Francis to pursue the case wherever it may lead, regardless of the consequences.
Emanuela Orlandi, then 15, was a Vatican teenager who mysteriously vanished on her way home from a flute lesson on June 22, 1983. Her family were residents of Vatican City, where her father was a lay employee in the papal household.

Emanuela’s brother, Pietro, had been passionately fighting for a reopening of the case for some time. After several requests from him and the Orlandi’s family lawyer, Laura Sgrò, it was confirmed by The Vatican’s promoter of justice, Alessandro Diddi, that the case that has gripped the nation of Italy for years was back under formal investigation.

Mark Lewis, who wrote and directed one of the most talked about (and disturbing) true-crime docseries in recent memory, is back on Netflix with a new series, “Vatican Girl: The Disappearance of Emanuela Orlandi.”
Like “Don’t F**k With Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer,” “Vatican Girl” was produced by British TV production company Raw. The four-part docseries will premiere globally on Netflix on Oct. 20.
“Vatican Girl” is the latest probe into a case that started on June 22, 1983, when Emanuela Orlandi, a 15-year-old girl living in Vatican City, disappeared under mysterious circumstances. The case made headlines around the world. Various theories have linked the girl’s presumed abduction to intrigue involving secret services of various countries, the Italian mob, and the Vatican, which has denied accusations of a coverup.

Netflix’s Italian arm is hunting for anti-heroes.
During a session here at Mia Market in Rome, Netflix Vice President of Italian Originals Eleanora ‘Tinny’ Andreatta said Italy had been traditionally starved of characters from the “imperfect hero to the rough hero” and wanted more of these tropes in her local programs.
Appearing alongside Netflix Emea chief Larry Tanz, she pointed to Everything Calls for Salvation, a drama about a troubled young man who is forced to spend a week in a mental hospital, only to find friendship and love from his fellow patients.
It’s loosely based on Daniele Mencarelli’s novel of the same name and directed by Francesco Bruni, and launches on Netflix tomorrow globally. Audiences members in Italy seemed enthused by a trailer of the show, which has hints of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

The act of watching goes hand in hand with cinema, and one filmmaker who examined the mix of voyeurism and violence that makes cinema so enrapturing was Michael Powell. Powell's 1960 film "Peeping Tom" focuses on Mark Lewis (Karlheinz Boehm), a documentarian serial killer. Mark films his victims, all young women, at their moment of death to capture primal fear in celluloid.
Powell's film was soundly rejected in its day and ended his sterling reputation in the UK; he only directed five largely forgotten films in the next three decades. But thanks to championing by figures such as Martin Scorsese, "Peeping Tom" found its audience and is now remembered as a classic. Why was the film so panned upon release, and how did its reputation recover? Let's dig in.
Who Was Michael Powell?
Powell rose to fame in the British film industry throughout the 1940s and 50s, but he didn't do it alone.

Genre: Sci-Fi | Reality | Paranormal
Air Date/Time: Wednesday, August 8 at 10/9c
Network: Syfy
Summary:
Syfy’s true terror breakout hit series, Paranormal Witness, will leave viewers jumping out of their seats with fear when it kicks off its second season on Wednesday, August 8 at 10 Pm (Et/Pt). Through gritty, realistic cinematic reenactments, Paranormal Witness recounts the bone-chilling, real-life paranormal experiences of everyday people and allows viewers to experience the terrifying moments for themselves. Actual eyewitnesses share their firsthand accounts of the inexplicable phenomena that forced them to try to make sense of the scariest, most inconceivable events of their lives.
I’ve seen a fair few of this type of sub-genre show now, and honestly, this series is the one that I can’t watch alone at night. I made the mistake of doing that with the series premiere last year, and am really glad I didn’t with this season opener.

"Paranormal Witness" and Slowly Improving: A Television Review ("The Haunting of Mansfield Mansion")
Director: Mark Lewis.
SyFy's "Paranormal Witness" finally offers a tale that takes up the whole hour. “The Haunting of Mansfield Mansion” is almost chilling because of all the infrasound being used to workout a home theater's subwoofer. Instead, the episode leaves many questions in its wake. This episode is supposed to cover events from 1994 to 2011, and in that large of a time frame, it leaves a lot of details out. This approach does not make for a convincing case.
Story-wise, this alleged haunting is interesting. It shows how resilient the human spirit is against a darkness that can not be understood. While Amy Moore is sticking the night terrors out, everyone else is running away. Alyssa, her daughter, is the first to leave when the opportunity presents itself (she gets a boyfriend) and Dave McGann, a cop, departed after experiencing poltergeist activity. Neither are brave enough to support Moore, even from a distance.
