Amandla Stenberg is joining Universal’s movie adaptation of “Dear Evan Hansen.” She will appear in an expanded role from the stage production as a high school senior Alana, and she will perform a song in the film.
“Dear Evan Hansen,” a Tony Award winning musical, opened on Broadway in 2016. The story follows a high schooler with social anxiety who gets caught up in a lie after the family of a classmate who committed suicide mistakes one of Hansen’s letters for their son’s suicide note.
Stenberg, whose credits include “The Hate U Give” and “Everything, Everything,” will portray Alana — a high school senior whose cheery façade and social-media savvy mask a deeper loneliness and isolation, and whose response to the death of a classmate ignites a movement.
The role has been expanded for the film, with Stenberg singing a new original song composed expressly for the film. She...

This year’s Cannes Film Festival has been postponed, organizers announced March 19, with new dates being considered for the end of June. It’s by far the largest global film event to be called off amid the growing worldwide coronavirus pandemic, which has led to the cancellation and postponement of dozens of events in recent weeks. Cannes’ 73rd edition was set to take place May 12 – 23. The event, in its modern history, has never been canceled.
Its cancellation is set to add to the pain already being felt in an industry faced with a litany of called-off events, halted productions, and an obliterated global box office — the loss of splashy premieres and an opportunity to make deals on the French Riviera are now just one piece of the economic woes facing the business.

Ridley will serve as executive producer, writer, and director on the show, which was first announced in July. He joins previously announced executive producers Alicia Keys, Benj Pasek, Justin Paul, Marc Platt, R.J. Cutler, and Adam Siegel. Fox 21 Television Studios will produce.
“Having worked with John Ridley many times over the years, I know firsthand how talented and fearless he is both as a writer and director,” said Gary Levine, co-president of entertainment for Showtime. “Combining his dramatic depth with the musical brilliance of Pasek and Paul and Alicia Keys promises a wildly original and entertaining series for Showtime.”

Paramount Pictures has landed the worldwide rights to Damien Chazelle’s next feature film “Babylon,” sources tell Variety.
Insiders add the studio has dated the film for a Dec. 25, 2021 limited release, with plans to go wide on Jan. 7. The release date puts in prime position for another awards season run for Chazelle, who won a best director Oscar for “La La Land.”
The project first came on the market over the summer, and insiders say Paramount was competing with Lionsgate to land the distribution rights. Emma Stone and Brad Pitt are in talks to star but sources add deals have not closed for either Stone or Pitt.
