Target is pushing into the influencer marketing space in a major way, after hosting its first NewFronts presentation this spring. At the same time, Target also tapped digital vet Karyn Spencer to serve its first-ever director of talent partnerships and influence marketing, overseeing relationships with traditional celebrities and digital creators on the retailer's behalf.
On social media in recent days, a fleet of seven influencers has been sharing posts with the hashtag #TargetTalent. The posts are simply teasing an initiative that has yet to roll out, but hints at a long-term partnerships, with content slated to roll out over the next year. This marks something of a progressive notion, given that brands often work with creators on a one-off basis.
Participants include: former Teen Vogue editor and author Elaine Welteroth, Vine-turned-YouTube star Lauren Giraldo, Try Guys member Ned Fulmer, Queer Eye host and interior design expert Bobby Berk,...

“Commerce is coming to the NewFronts,” says leading ad exec Noah Mallin.
In an interview with Tubefilter, the head of content and experience at top ad agency Wavemaker -- which reps clients including L'Oréal, Ikea, Paramount Pictures, and Colgate-Palmolive -- said that more and more publishers are integrating commerce ventures into their presentations. “We're seeing partners start to bring commerce into their experiences,” Mallin said, "and even having a partner like Target here is a sign that we’re bringing content and commerce together.”
To this point, Target made its inaugural presentation at the NewFronts this year, where it announced that it had tapped longtime digital vet Karyn Spencer to head up talent partnerships and influencer marketing. The company also revealed that it has re-named and re-branded its three-year-old in-house media agency, which is now dubbed Roundel -- a synonym for Target's signature bullseye logo. Target has its sight set on the digital talent sphere.
In addition to hosting its first-ever NewFronts presentation today, the nation’s eighth-largest retail chain has hired digital vet Karyn Spencer as its director of talent partnerships and influence marketing.
While the specifics of Spencer's role have not been announced, she will presumably be tasked with building and overseeing relationships with traditional celebrities and digital creators on Target’s behalf. It’s also seemingly a brand new role for the company, which hasn’t had an in-house employee dedicated to influencer marketing before. Spencer will be based in Los Angeles.
