Katy Perry is leaving American Idol after the show crowns the Season 22 winner, and ahead of the grand finale on Sunday night, the judge predicts she’ll most likely cry.
“I think I will be crying at anything,” Perry said in an interview posted by Kabc. ‘It’s been a beautiful journey and I love watching these kids grow and becoming this big beautiful patchwork quilt.”
Perry is set to end her seven-year tenure on the ABC reality competition, which is also making her co-judges, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, emotional.
“To see her leave is going to be frightening and sad, but at the same time … hang on to your seat! She has a roar, about herself, no pun intended,” Richie said.
Bryan added, “It’ll be emotional. Katy, Lionel, and I have developed a close friendship. It will be an emotional night.”

Mandisa's latest album "What If We Were Real," which was released in 2011, features the #1 hit "Stronger." She's chronicled her weight loss journey in a series of YouTube videos titled "Journey To 100."

Talk about turning a negative into a positive! While appearing on Monday's Good Morning America, gospel singer and American Idol season five contestant Mandisa not only showed off a slimmer figure, but the 35-year-old performer also revealed what led her to make such a change. Mandisa recalled how it was actually a less-than-kind remark made by then-judge Simon Cowell that served as a motivator. "It was hurtful and mean and the one thing I didn't want to have happen," she said. The Cowell comment in question—"Do we have a bigger stage this year?"—came right after Mandisa had made it through to Hollywood following her 2006 audition. Mandisa subsequently...

When NBC’s rival singing competition The Voice returned in February, I felt like I was the only Idol fan left in America. Media outlets championed NBC’s chair-spinning competition, with its flashy format — an audition style that’s admittedly superior to Idol’s — and sass-spewing judges, Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, and Blake Shelton. “The Voice is more relevant, more meaningful, more compelling and more entertaining right now,” said Alex Strachan of the Montreal Gazette. “After a decade, we no longer believe in the Idol factory,” wrote EW’s Mark Harris. Those barbs stung me (an American Idol junkie) personally...

The British are coming on next week’s American Idol — at least in song. The top 5, Hollie Cavanagh, Skylar Laine, Joshua Ledet, Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez, will choose tunes for the British-themed show. Carrie Underwood and Coldplay are also set to perform. What would you like to hear the Idols sing?
Colton Dixon returned to The Ellen Degeneres Show on Thursday after being eliminated last week. Some of you may remember when he visited Ellen last year after he was cut from Idol just shy of the Top 24. Sister Schyler and his mom were in the audience to cheer...

There’s this weird part of the week — from Friday morning till Monday evening — when not a single major TV network airs a reality singing competition. It’s terrible, I know, but it also gives me a lot of time to ponder American Idol history. (Everyone does this in their free time, yes?) And my latest flight of Idol fancy got me mulling this question: Was Season 11′s Top 10 the strongest — top to bottom — in show history? Let’s examine:
For starters, I’d automatically rule out the five seasons with three or more Top 10 contestants who probably wouldn’t have outlasted Season 11′s No.

The news of Pia “I Got Voted Off ‘Idol’ Way Early And All I Got Was This Awesome Record Deal” Toscano joining Interscope’s roster surprised no one, except maybe my cat Moo Shu. (Homegirl’s a Voice fan. She thinks Idol is so seven years ago.) Toscano already shattered records by being the lowest-placing Idol also-ran to nab a significant major label deal in the show’s ten year history. (She was ninth! Ninth, I say!)
While we wait to see whether Pia becomes the next Jennifer Hudson or Kristy Lee Cook, let’s look back at the careers of previous ninth-place finishers to see how they’ve fared.
Season One: Jim Verraros
Jim was our inaugural “token sob story” contestant, and he parlayed his name recognition into movie roles in popular gay indie flicks. (Eating Out 2: Sloppy Seconds might be my fave sequel title since Electric Boogaloo.

Let’s be real for a second: We needed NBC’s The Voice in our lives about as much as Christina Aguilera’s hair (wig?) needed another peroxide treatment. I mean, Tuesdays are supposed to be reserved for Dancing With the Stars results, Glee, The Good Wife, and (when possible) catching up on back episodes of 90210 or The Killing.
But the DVR is a harsh mistress. And the series premiere of The Voice was pretty terrific. Which means we’ll all just have to dig down deep in our couch cushions and find two more hours to sacrifice on the altar of appointment television.

Ever watch "American Idol" and think, "You know, I like watching amateurs perform, but I wish I could watch them sing four seconds of a Beatles song surrounded by oversized props on a hydraulic-enhanced stage"? Well, Wednesday night's (February 23) new Vegas round episode was just for you.
It was supposed to be a full two hours of people saying they've never heard of the Beatles, Steven Tyler waxing poetically about living in "Beatle Land" and awkward Seacrest interviews set in a makeshift Coca-Cola/Ford room that got integrated marketing execs horny. But then Jennifer Lopez had to go and have a meltdown when she told Chris Medina that he wasn't good enough to be on the show and producers said, "Eh, let's chop out that boring Vegas singing part. Who watches 'Idol' for the music anyway?"

Paging Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig: "American Idol's" Mandisa Hundley truly is a weight loss inspiration.
The Season 5 finalist has lost 90 pounds over the last two years. What prompted the weight loss? "I had gained weight and was so frustrated at that moment that I said so on Twitter," she tells The Associated Press.
The two-time Grammy nominee used her weight loss journey as inspiration for her new gospel album, "What If We Were Real," which will be released on Apr. 5. "Where I was at the beginning of this album and where I ended up are two very different places," she says. "It's been a process. I will always struggle with my weight. It's the thorn in my flesh."
The singer has chronicled her weight troubles on Twitter, interacting with fans and not holding back. After stepping on the scale and hating the number she saw, she tweeted, "I'm fed-up and over it.

While the ostensible point of Wednesday night's "American Idol" finale was to decide the fates of Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox, the evening's spotlight returned again and again to Simon Cowell. Before the acerbic yet somehow lovable British judge left to jumpstart another Fox show, "Idol" celebrated his nine seasons of work with video segments, comedic bits and an appearance by former judge — and frequent Cowell sparring partner — Paula Abdul.
We're gonna miss the guy, with his ludicrously unbuttoned dress shirts and surly witticisms. It's an open question whether the show can survive without him, especially coming off a season that almost everyone can agree was lackluster at best and soul-crushing at worst. We worry about what "Idol" will be like without Cowell there to speak the truth...

Instead, they're highly relevant numbers relating to tonight's American Idol episode: With the hour-long telecast in the books, only five contestants and eight episodes remain in this ninth season, and I've got 18 ideas for theme weeks that Ken Warwick & Co. could use to improve the show. Shania Twain night on "American Idol" was a surprisingly strong one -- as it should be at this stage of the game. What happens when a star from a hit scripted show on Fox meets a star from a hit reality show on Fox? Information on the final season of "24" via an "American Idol" finalist emerges.
Season 5 "Idol" finalist Mandisa tweets April 26: "24 Spoiler- When I met Cherry Jones @ Lax she warned me that Pres.Taylor would not go unscathed. This makes me sad."
It has been made public knowledge that this is the final season of "24" and while we doubt they would kill off Jack Bauer, could this mean they kill off President Allison Taylor?! It's not like the show is shy about making mince meat of its main characters. We certainly hope that's not the case here but with the tease from actress Cherry Jones, who knows?
Meanwhile, "24" star Kiefer Sutherland has told Zap2it what his plans are going forward, which include a role in the Lars von Trier movie "Melancholia.

Last week was American Idol's first week, and already we were treated to sob stories, annoyed contestants, and the ubiquitous "Pants on the Ground", with some good singing scattered in between. This week, I expect things to stay the same. Well, except for the viral hit. And there's the benefit of those spoilers we've been getting our hands on over the weekend--it'd be interesting seeing some of those names impress us on TV rather than on YouTube.
Tonight, we head to Chicago, that windy city that Oprah calls home. The show hasn't been there too many times--they've held auditions twice there, I think, including that little bit about Mandisa confronting Simon after his quips during audition. Random fact you probably know already: she was never in the bottom three until she was eliminated. That week, she sang a song from Shania Twain, who happens to be tonight's guest judge.

At 22, Katharine McPhee was the runner-up on the fifth season of "American Idol" and very quickly released her self-titled debut album. Because, as she says, coming out of "Idol," the contestants have very little time to decide exactly what they're going to do.
Three years later, McPhee's sophomore album "Unbroken" gave her take more time and be more involved in the process. The end product is a quirky, more folk-y offering to go with her new sassy blonde 'do, in a genre that Katharine tells Zap2it she "can really build off of for her next project."

Look no further than Billboard's year-end and decade-end charts to see how influential "American Idol" has been on the music landscape.
Fifteen different Idols appeared on decade-end lists at Billboard, including all "American Idol" winners (except Kris Allen, who was not eligible). The following Idols landed on at least one decade-end list: Clay Aiken, David Archuleta, Fantasia Barrino, Kelly Clarkson, David Cook, Chris Daughtry, Josh Gracin, Taylor Hicks, Jennifer Hudson, Kimberley Locke, Mandisa, Jordin Sparks, Ruben Studdard, Carrie Underwood and Elliott Yamin.
On the prestigious Artists of the Decade chart, Clarkson (No. 14), Underwood (No. 50) and Daughtry (No. 90) all made appearances. Clay Aiken joined them with "Measure of a Man" at No. 170.
