Joseph Lelyveld, who won the 1986 Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction for his book, Move Your Shadow: South Africa, Black and White, and was a former executive editor and foreign correspondent for The New York Times, died on Friday at his Manhattan home.
He was 86 and succumbed to complications of Parkinson’s disease, according to Janny Scott, his partner of 19 years and a former Times reporter.
Lelyveld was reported from Washington, Congo, India, Hong Kong, Johannesburg and London during his long career.
He served as the Times executive editor from 1994 to 2001, arguably the most powerful post in American journalism. He oversaw a newspaper transitioning to the digital age, ushering in the New York Times website and the beginning of 24-hour news coverage.

Ryan Murphy made headlines back in 2018 when the prolific producer of TV hits ranging from "Glee" to "American Horror Story" signed a massive content deal with Netflix, estimated at a record-breaking $300 million. Since then, Murphy and his collaborators have delivered a head-spinning array of projects for viewers of the streaming service, in addition to various shows for network television and the FX basic cable brand.
Known for audacious and outrageous plot twists, compelling characters, and assembling a repertory company comprised of some of Hollywood's finest actors, Murphy has managed to leave his imprint on everything he touches. Realistically speaking, Murphy has increasingly spread himself thin as he continues to pump out more and more television content within multiple genres. Though everything remains thoroughly on brand, not all of those projects achieve the same level of quality. Occasional stumbles are inevitable. With that in mind, read on for a roundup of...

“Dollface” is a comedy series about female solidarity with Jules Wiley (Kat Dennings) playing the protagonist role. Produced by ABC Signature, this show has something surreal about it. It reveals what life is like for Jules, who suffers heartbreak after getting dumped by her longtime boyfriend. The character deals with the challenges of rejoining female social circles and rekindling lost friendships.
The plot takes unusual twists and turns to tell the story of female friendships in the modern world. Unlike most romantic comedies, the protagonist doesn’t seek comfort in a new love interest but aims to mend broken friendships. As a result, the storyline has a fresh take on girl power and sisterhood spiced with a bit of humor.
Film pundits and viewers showered mostly positive reviews upon the show. Some reviewers praised the main cast’s role in making the show a joy to watch. Others felt it...

Dollface is over for good at Hulu.
The streaming service has canceled the Kat Dennings-fronted comedy from creator Jordan Weiss after two seasons, according to TV Line.
The first season of Dollface burst onto screens in November 2019, landing a renewal in early 2020.
Hulu touted the success of the series at the time, but the second season was delayed due to Covid-19.
It finally returned in February, but it's unclear whether the show didn't perform as well as expected, or if there is some other reason for the decision.
The initial season did have a lot of buzz, but the TV landscape is filled with content these days, especially with the rise of streaming.
The series follows a young woman who – after being dumped by her longtime boyfriend – must deal with her own imagination in order to literally and metaphorically re-enter the world of women, and rekindle the female friendships she left behind.

It's hard to get too angry at Life Sentence. It means well and it's trying its best to lure those who want a Parenthood lite series to watch each week with unfathomably attractive actors at the heart of the drama. But it needed to be a limited series or a film. It needed, more accurately, a definitive start and end date.
If it ever felt as if the showrunners had a long-term, endgame plan for any of the characters, maybe it would be able to inspire a greater sense of confidence.
Instead, on Life Sentence Season 1 Episode 7, what we're left with is a lot of characters making increasingly dumb decisions all for the sake of either advancing or flat-out stalling the plot.
What should have been the big storyline of the week -- Aidan and Stella's marital trouble due to Doctor Grant -- is put on the back burner for further Aidan musings.

This weekend, Lucy Hale will be seen on the big-screen in her first lead role in Blumhouse Productions’ “Truth or Dare,” a horror film she calls “unique.”
“It’s such a nostalgic game and it reminded me of when you were younger,” she told TheWrap in a recent interview about the party game popular with high schoolers.
“Initially, our challenge was taking this idea and making it believable, which was going to be the hardest part — Raising the stakes high enough to keep people on their toes, while still making it believable,” Hale explained.

“In horror films, you don’t always care about people dying, you’re like, ‘just die already!’ — but with this movie, you care for the people,” she went on to say. “It’s a horror film, but each of the secrets that the people harbor is heavy stuff, which was a formula that really made for a unique horror film.”

Hale stars as Olivia, a selfless, do-good college girl who gets roped into going on a Spring Break trip with her friends. On their last night in Mexico, they play a game of Truth or Dare that quickly turns dangerous, and it follows them home — where things turn even more deadly. Directed by Jeff Wadlow, the film also stars Tyler Posey.
But to Hale, it isn’t just about scaring people to death. It carries a deeper message of “being selfless and standing up for what is right, to take care of yourself and to be there for your friends.”
While many fans might have nightmares from the distorted facial expressions the characters in the movie endure, Hale had scary dreams about another part of the film.
“I might’ve had nightmares about the long days and shooting in the extreme heat, which was exhausting,” she said. “When you film a horror movie, it takes away the scary factor. I just recently saw the film edited together and it’s nice to watch it when you’re so removed from the horror of the film.”
We all remember playing Truth or Dare during sleepovers or class field trips — and Hale recalls always playing it pretty safe by choosing truth, she said.

While she is excited to star in her first feature film in which she is the lead after appearing on shows like “Pretty Little Liars” and indies like “The Unicorn,” “Truth or Dare” wasn’t her absolute favorite project to work on.
“It’s hard to say, but I’d probably say ‘Life Sentence’ was really special to me,” she said. “Creatively, it’s what I needed at the time, and we had such a good group of people. It’s a show that I stand by, believe in, and I trust it will find its audience. I think that there are so many good things about it and I love my character.”
The CW show “Life Sentence” premiered on March 7 and also stars Elliot Knight, Jayson Blair and Brooke Lyons. In its first season, Hale isn’t sure whether the teen drama will be picked up for a second, but she asked her fans to voice their love for the show to the CW, and since then, an online petition has been started for the show to be renewed.

It would seem to be that Life Sentence will continue to exist on that weird plain of melodrama meets relationship comedy.
On Life Sentence Season 1 Episode 3, there is no in-between with everything awash with eye-popping vibrancy and interior decor that's perfectly assembled to created immediate loft envy.
Even the most impossible characters and their most impossible traits are somewhat lovable. From Aiden's inability to grow up or Paul's obsession with his old love or even Stella's naive self-righteous nature, through all their fumbling they're immensely likable characters.
Which is what makes this episode hit such a momentary misstep as it sets up a potential romance with a new character who rings immediately false.
The framework is successful, as it allows characters to splinter off into twosomes rather than having one character run around and touch base with each family member and/or friend to remind the audience who's who.

A CW comedy-drama, Life Sentence stars Lucy Hale, Dylan Walsh, Gillian Vigman, Brooke Lyons, Carlos PenaVega, Jayson Blair, and Elliot Knight. The dramedy centers on Stella Abbott (Hale). If we were to isolate Life Sentence Season 1 Episode 1 from the entire series starring a charismatic Lucy Hale, the show would be a delightful triumph, breezy and fun and easy on the eyes with that CW sheen and glow of beautiful people on our screens.
Life Sentence is a charmer about one woman facing down the prospect of life after having come to terms with her death and the relationships built in just an hour feel lived in, well rounded and cared for by actors who already feel at home in the skin of the character.
But this isn't merely a one hour story, nor is it a mini-series.
Instead, it's only just the pilot of the latest CW series, and while that charm is apparent and striking, there's only so much it can do to power along a show whose shelf-life seems rather limited.

What seems like a happy ending is merely an awkward new beginning on The CW’s Life Sentence.
The drama, which made its long-awaited premiere on Wednesday, stars Lucy Hale (Pretty Little Liars) as Stella Abbott, a young woman who — until very recently — believed she was going to die of cancer. And while she’s obviously pleased to learn that she’s been cured, she’s less pleased to discover that her family, even with the best of intentions, has been keeping a few secrets from her.

Someday, Lucy Hale is probably going to star in a very good TV comedy. She may not be the lead, like she is the in the new CW series “Life Sentence,” playing Stella Abbott, a young woman with a new lease on life after a surprise revelation that her cancer is in remission. She may not be forced to deliver lengthy monologues about love and family and the thought of dying against the backdrop of a series that only seems marginally interested in any of those things. But at least in this theoretical yet-to-be-produced series, she won’t be one of the only redeeming parts of the show she’s in.
The most interesting layer of “Life Sentence” is that in a way, every member of Stella‘s family has been writing their own kind of TV show over the eight years that Stella was sick. They’ve written their own characters,...

The New York Times is eliminating the position of public editor, the paper announced Wednesday. The current holder of the position, former Washington Post managing editor Elizabeth Spayd, will leave the Times on Friday more than a year ahead of the scheduled end of her tenure. The paper hired its first public editor in 2003 in the wake of the embarrassing plagiarism scandal surrounding former reporter Jayson Blair. The position was created to provide more accountability to readers about the actions and decisions of the Times’ editors and reporters. Life Sentence‘s Stella is tragically not long for this world. She’s got cancer and it’s terminal. Friends and family flock to her and she decides that she’s going to live what remains of her life to the fullest. So, it’s time for some crazy impulsive decisions, including marrying a stranger she just met. What does it matter, it’s not like she’s going to be alive to face the music, right?
Then comes the good news. She’s miraculously cured! Suddenly, Stella’s life stretches on ahead of her and, for the first time in eight years, her choices have consequences that stretch decades ahead of her. Now that she’s not dying, she realizes that her family have been keeping the sacrifices they’ve made for her hidden away. Worse, without her illness she’s no longer ‘special’ – just another unemployable snake person with a silly haircut.

Spider-man’S Fight With Sandman Was Fraud With Peril
Ok, while it wasn’t enough to make him a threat or a menace, what Spider-Man did wasn’t very nice.
It was Mike Barr, a long-time friend and even longer-timed comic-book reader, who reminded me of this story. Mike’s a friend and comic-book reader of such long standing that when he said Spider-Man #4, I knew which comic he meant. When the long-timers say Spider-Man # 4, we only mean one book. We don’t need no steenkin’ adjectives. Or even volume numbers. For us the original The Amazing Spider-Man was Spider-Man and Spider-Man #4 can only mean what is now clumsily called: The Amazing Spider-Man v 1 #4.
In the middle of this story, the first appearance of the villain Sandman, said villain was running from the cops and decided to hide out in Midtown High School, which seems the perfect place to hide.

At the start of True Story, New York Times Magazine writer Michael Finkel (who co-wrote the film, based on his memoir) is caught creating a composite character for a piece on the still-extant African slave trade. At home after his firing and disgrace (upstaged, it turns out, by the revelation of Jayson Blair’s exponentially more horrifying journalistic sins a short time later), he gets the bizarre news that a fugitive named Christian Longo has been captured in Mexico posing as ... him. There’s strong evidence that Longo (James Franco) murdered his wife and three small children and dumped their bodies in an Oregon waterway. So Finkel — using his peculiar connection — decides to interview this liar who stole the name of a liar. He believes it’s vital to do so. As a public relations practitioner, my ears pricked on Dec. 22 when Rolling Stone’s maximum leader Jann Wenner sent out this missive — right in time for Christmas break — that he was recruiting the Columbia Journalism School to review Rolling Stone’s now-infamous Nov. 19 “A Rape on Campus” story.
My first thoughts? Why would a venerated school of journalism carry the water for what could be a Wenner public relations gambit; i.e., the ol’ “independent review” that’s not really “independent” and not really a “review”? Does the Columbia J School actually have the guts to deeply examine its client...

'Whiplash' movie review: 'Emotionally explosive film' (photo: J.K. Simmons in 'Whiplash') Damien Chazelle, writer and director of Whiplash, his 2014 Sundance Film Festival-winning second feature, is himself a musical prodigy of sorts. He attended the sort of prestigious musical conservatory his protagonist — played by the acerbic, ascending star Miles Teller — attends in Chazelle's sharply realized, emotionally explosive film. Whiplash, in fact, is a most appropriate title. The “insider's” perspective can sometimes burden a young filmmaker — or a filmmaker of any age, really. Knowing too much can be a trap; the inclination to “get it right” down to the last well-known detail can muddy a story and stifle narrative flow. And there's the possibility — or rather, the likelihood — that the filmmaker's personal experience is actually interesting only to the filmmaker. Chazelle avoids these pitfalls. Whiplash, while stylish and slightly elliptical, is neither muddy nor stifling. It flows freely; it's literally...

Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash garnered immense acclaim at Sundance and only improved its stellar rep after being included in the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight. By all accounts, it’s one of the very best musical dramas in recent memory, thanks to its tight direction, thrilling story, dramatic tone and wholly compelling performances from Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons. And with its participation in the Toronto International Film Festival now set, something tells me that we’re going to be talking about Whiplash all the way up until its theatrical release in October.
An extremely tense and compelling new trailer for the movie is making the rounds online, keeping the focus squarely on Simmons’ vicious and ruthless band conductor and Teller’s struggling musical prodigy. Both performances look superb, and Chazelle’s script seems primed to provide a terrific showcase for both actors.
