Neon has released an official trailer for Pamela Adlon‘s directorial debut “Babes,” a comedy starring Ilana Glazer and Michelle Buteau.
“Babes” follows childhood best friends Eden (Glazer) and Dawn (Buteau) as Eden becomes pregnant after a one night stand and leans on Dawn to guide her through her pregnancy and beyond. While Dawn navigates motherhood and raising her second child with her husband (Hasan Minaj), she and Eden explore their vastly different adulthoods with one another.
Glazer, the co-creator and star of Comedy Central’s sitcom “Broad City,” co-wrote the screenplay with Josh Rabinowitz. She also produced the movie. The film, which premiered at the SXSW Film Festival last month, is set to release on May 17.

One of the most successful cinematic universes in Hollywood doesn't have any superheroes, isn't set in outer space, and wasn't originally designed as a cinematic universe at all. James Wan's 2013 horror movie "The Conjuring" was made on a budget of just $20 million but became a stunning box office success, grossing more than $320 million worldwide. That success has since spawned a whole world of horror that includes not only two "Conjuring" sequels, but also the spin-off "Annabelle" trilogy, two "Nun" movies, and (tenuously) "The Curse of La Llorona."
A big part of what makes the "Conjuring" movies so frightening is their commitment to practical effects. The strangest supernatural feats are achieved using wire work, contortionists, and stunt performers, while monsters like the Nun and the Crooked Man are real actors in make-up.

Cinematic universes are all the rage now but it's easy to forget how recent a phenomenon this actually is. The notion of a cinematic universe didn't really exist until around 2010 when it became clear what Marvel Studios was doing with its various superhero franchises in the lead-up to the record-breaking "The Avengers" in the summer of 2012. Sure, we had Kevin Smith's films making up the View Askewniverse starting with "Clerks" in 1994 -- not to mention Universal's monster movie crossovers from decades earlier. Still, once Marvel perfected the model, Hollywood chased it down rabidly. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it fails spectacularly. But arguably nobody has done it better this side of Marvel than James Wan and "The Conjuring" universe.

After giving us a unique twist on the vampire film in Climate of the Hunter, Mickey Reece and co-writer John Selvidge are back with Agnes, their take on demonic possession and evil doings in a convent. And while I knew this wasn’t going to be another nunsploitation film, I wasn’t expecting just what it delivers.
Sister Agnes is a young nun in an out-of-the-way convent of Saint Theresa. Her behaviour has been most troubling lately, foaming at the mouth, swearing at, and even attacking her fellow nuns. When Mother Superior (Mary Buss; Camp Cold Brook) asks for help she’s sent Father Donaghue an exorcist whom the diocese is looking for an excuse to excommunicate and his protege Ben.

Molly C. Quinn stars in the new indie horror film Agnes, which premiered at Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. Quinn signed on as executive producer for Agnes with her production company QWGmire. Quinn has previously starred in the series Castle, as well as the film Doctor Sleep.
Agnes tells the horrific story of a nun who becomes possessed (Hayley McFarland) and is then subjected to an exorcism by a priest, played by Ben Hall (Climate of the Hunter), who was given the task as a form of punishment for his questionable past. Molly C. Quinn plays a nun named Mary who is friends with the possessed nun, Agnes, but is also dealing with her own demons, which leads her on a journey of self-discovery.

From Oklahoma City, indie filmmaker Mickey Reece has astoundingly made over twenty-five movies in a decade, often working on a very small budget. His new film Agnes premiered at Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year and is now being released by Magnet Releasing. Star Molly C. Quinn even served as an executive producer through her production company QWGmire.
Agnes tells the story of a nun named Agnes (Hayley McFarland) who begins to show signs of possession, much to the dismay of her convent’s Mother Superior. Molly C. Quinn (Doctor Sleep) plays Mary, a nun who is friends with Agnes and who has been struggling internally since joining the convent. Ben Hall (Climate of the Hunter) plays Father Donaghue, a priest with a shady background who is called in to perform an exorcism on Agnes, along with a priest in training, Benjamin, played by Jake Horowitz. Mickey Reece’s “Agnes” is the kind of wild and wooly indie whatsit that we’re sometimes lucky enough to get from DIY filmmakers who shoot first and question themselves later. Introducing itself as a hackneyed slab of low-budget religious horror — the title character is a demon-afflicted nun who might as well be possessed by the IMDb quotes page for “The Exorcist” — sacred genre tropes soon fray into something less recognizable as Reece’s freeform plotting comes to reflect his film’s poignantly unorthodox relationship with faith. For all of its ruffled habits and bleeding eyes, “Agnes” is far sadder than it is scary, and often sillier than it is sad; the end product And yet, I’d argue that nothing in “The Conjuring” or any of its offshoots is as harrowing as the moment when someone in this movie is asked, “Have you ever felt love outside of God,...

Those uncertain just how seriously Paul Verhoeven intended us to take the alternately earnest and lurid nunsploitation of “Benedetta” will be even more flummoxed by Mickey Reece’s “Agnes.” , in addition to being too underdeveloped and tonally wobbly to satisfy in themselves.
Unlike the squirrelly genre-bender that was the director’s last feature, “Climate of the Hunter,” conceptually near-random “Agnes” does not find its own singular terms to work within. Viewers lured in by the horror-movie marketing will be particularly irked by this bait-and-switch oddity, which Magnet releases to limited U.S. theaters and VOD on Dec. 10.
When a young nun suddenly begins ranting obscenities in a “demonic” voice at a Carmelite convent, the bishop informs Father Donaghue (Ben Hall) that he must attend to the situation. "You don't have the luxury to be frightened!" Magnet Releasing has unveiled an official trailer for a nun horror film titled Agnes, from filmmaker Mickey Reece. This initially premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year, and also recently stopped by Fantastic Fest and the Sitges Film Festival this fall. Rumors of demonic possession at a religious convent prompts a church investigation into the strange goings-on among its nuns. A disaffected priest and his neophyte are confronted with temptation, bloodshed and a crisis of faith. That description sounds a lot like Paul Verhoeven's Benedetta (which I also highly recommend) - but this is something else entirely! Agnes stars Hayley McFarland as the titular nun "Agnes", with Molly C. Quinn, Sean Gunn, Chris Sullivan, Rachel True, Chris Browning, and Jake Horowitz. This looks rather cliche and obvious, especially following the exquisite Saint Maud. But it still might be worth a watch.

Something is wrong with Agnes (Hayley McFarland). She’s behaving in a most unseemly way for a nun and her Mother Superior suspects, well, the usual – that some demonic entity has succeeded in getting hold of her. Naturally the Church is a bit embarrassed by this and would prefer to avoid reports leaking into the wider world, so it turns to Father Donaghue (Ben Hall) and earnest young acolyte Benjamin (Jake Horowitz) for help. Benjamin, told not to let anyone know that he isn’t yet ordained, instantly inspires lustful comments from the nuns and thus attracts the Mother Superior’s ire. Donaghue is caught up in accusations that he abused a child, but this is, at least in context, treated as less of a problem. its primary function is to discomfort the viewer as the charismatic Hall draws us onto his side.

Agnes begins how any other possession film might––with the discovery of a demonic presence. When the convent of Saint Theresa fear there’s evil inhabiting the body of one of their young nuns, they outsource help from the diocese. Things quickly, expectedly start to unravel from there. But director Mickey Reece wants you to forget everything you know about possession and exorcism in film––or, well, maybe not. Because part of what makes his new feature Agnes work so beautifully is its very upending of expectations for that particular horror subgenre. With over twenty-five feature films thus far, spanning his career since 2008 as a lower-budget indie darling––and who impressed with a wider reach with last year’s Fantasia staple Climate of the Hunter––Reece makes clear how films like The Conjuring franchise have been failing us. Reece (alongside co-writer John Selvidge) has crafted a disarming, funny, incredibly unique...

In Agnes, a cynical priest and young novice approaching his vows are called to investigate rumors of demonic possession within a convent. What occurs within those walls will call forward temptations, doubt, and a true test of faith. Agnes is written and directed by Mickey Reece and stars Ben Hall (Climate of the Hunter), Jake Horowitz (The Vast of Night), and Hayley McFarland.
It is with the utmost disappointment that I report that Agnes is far from being the religious horror that audiences may be hoping for. If what you’re looking for is the expected beats of a demonic possession à la The Devils, you will be sorely disappointed. And confused. The trouble with Agnes extends beyond its failing to deliver a solid possession horror, but that it seems to have rolled two movies into one rather ineffectively.

Marks has heard about the Chinese shipment getting hit and he’s more or less convinced that Samcro is behind it. He’s not buying that the two muscle men ran the operation, as he knows that the Chinese lost 4 kilos of heroin, not two. Threatening Jax, he says he’ll have no problem killing him or any of the other Sons.

Can horror movies be scary anymore? This is an interesting question because for the most part horror fans don’t watch horror expecting to be scared because they’ve seen it all before. When a little bit of magic happens and that twinge of fear does spark then that tends to make us enjoy the film even more. This is a rarity, especially in “Hollywood horror” but The Conjuring actually manages to get a few good scares.

Sons of Anarchy Season 6 Episode 9
“John 8:32” may very well have been my favorite episode of Sons of Anarchy this season. There was something especially cathartic about seeing all of the family squabbles play out, without the needless distractions of wacky explosions, “shocking” deaths or Walter Goggins’ boob scenes.
It’s always great when the cast has a chance to breath and captivate us without running around ad nauseam to an up tempo chase song. I love action just as much as the next guy, but it’s those solemn songs and moments that really draw you in to this motorcycle-club drama.
Although the Jax vs. Clay beef has been played and strung along like turkey meat, I’m digging the new Jax vs. Tara drama. Throughout the past few seasons the Jax, Tara and Gemma love triangle has been had its share ups and downs. But that’s what...

Gemma (Katey Sagal) tries to tell him, and so does Nero (Jimmy Smits), but it's hard to hear the words from people so deeply involved in the situation. It even got to the point of Jax and Nero throwing punches. Nero simply tried to talk some sense to Tara, but she relayed a different, far more horrible version, of the events to Jax, who felt compelled to act. The truth also came out about Gemma being forced to sleep with Clay (Ron Perlman) in front of prison guards, something that helped...

Big things are coming to "Sons of Anarchy," and as usual they're mostly pretty bad. Almost all of Season 6 has been hard on the club, and Jax (Charlie Hunnam) himself. He's lost his clubhouse, Samcro is seemingly falling apart while he tries to go legitimate, and now he's lost a child.
Of course, what he doesn't realize is that the child Tara (Maggie Siff) miscarried wasn't real at all. It was a hoax on her part, to wrench Gemma (Katey Sagal) out of her kids' lives. Gemma knows the truth about what happened though, and it was confirmed by Wendy (Drea de Matteo).
Now the question becomes what will it take for Jax to listen to his mother and realize she's telling the truth. Certainly the words of his junkie ex-wife won't do the trick, so Gemma has an uphill battle ahead of her to get Jax back on her side.

"Sons of Anarchy" Season 6 is entering its home stretch with the ninth episode, "John 8:32," and it's time for some truths to be revealed. The episode's title corresponds with a Bible verse, reading, "Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." However, the name could also be a reference to Jax's (Charlie Hunnam) father, John Teller.
The photos are heavily Jax-centric, which seems logical based on the episode's promo. What's known is that Jax has a sit down with D. A. Patterson (Cch Pounder), more than likely about her coming after the club for the school shooting.
One question the pictures bring to mind is who, exactly, is Brooke? The woman, played by Hayley McFarland, is reported to be in two episodes of the show, including the Season 6 finale. Seeing as she was given her own portrait, it stands to reason Brooke play an important...

The Conjuring - Warner Bros. - Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD Director: James Wan Cast: Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Lili Taylor, Ron Livingston, Hayley McFarland. Full cast + crew Regardless of how you feel about the real-life exploits of the Warren family, it's hard to deny that they inspire great horror movies. The Conjuring is a near-perfect blend of traditional horror techniques with modern production values, and it's easily James Wan's most accomplished film to date. In fact, it's so good it'll make you sad that Wan is turning his back on horror movies for the foreseeable future, as he really is one of Hollywood's best in that ballpark. The actual script is a bit familiar and becomes a tad convoluted once more and more...

One of the most talked about hits of the summer, New Line Cinema’s The Conjuring has surpassed $100 million at the domestic box office on only its third weekend in theatres, it was announced today by Dan Fellman, President, Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures. The film crossed the $100 million mark on Saturday, August 3, and has earned an estimated $108.6 million domestically to date, and still climbing.
The Conjuring is also off to a great start internationally, opening in just 13 markets thus far. The film opened in the UK this weekend, taking the #1 spot on Friday and Saturday, and it is also holding extremely well in other early release markets, particularly in Australia and Spain. The Conjuring movie may have broken horror genre box-office record - even considering inflation (photo: paranormal investigator Patrick Wilson in The Conjuring) James Wan’s Warner Bros.-distributed horror movie The Conjuring, starring Patrick Wilson (Little Children, Watchmen) and 2009 Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominee Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air), opened with more than twice its reported $20 million production budget at 2,903 North American venues this past weekend, July 19-21, 2013. According to weekend box-office actuals found at Box Office Mojo, The Conjuring took in an outstanding $41.85 million — including an estimated $3.31 million from Thursday evening and midnight screenings. The horror movie also earned an additional $3.4 million internationally. Which movie is the box-office record holder in the original R-rated horror movie category? The Conjuring: ‘True story’ horror movie box office beats (much) costlier competition (Photo: Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson in The Conjuring) James Wan’s $20 million-budgeted horror movie The Conjuring, starring Best Supporting Actress Academy Award nominee Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air) and Patrick Wilson, may end up grossing about twice its production cost at the North American box office this weekend, July 19-21, 2013. According to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo, The Conjuring scored a highly impressive $17.03 million from 2,903 venues on Friday — including $3.31 million from Thursday evening and midnight screenings. That means Wan’s generally well-received effort (see below) may end up boasting the biggest domestic opening ever for an original R-rated horror movie — well, if you pretend inflation doesn’t exist. Now, inflation plays no role among this weekend’s films: The Conjuring has been leaving far behind three other (way costlier) new releases: DreamWorks Animation’s...

The Conjuring box office: Biggest opening weekend ever for an original R-rated horror movie? (Photo: Vera Farmiga in The Conjuring) The Conjuring, James Wan’s low-budget horror movie starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, collected an impressive $3.31 million from Thursday midnight screenings (July 18-19, 2013) according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. That site’s Ray Subers is expecting The Conjuring, which has a somewhat surprising 84% approval rating and 7.3/10 average among Rotten Tomatoes‘ top critics, to gross close to $38 million from 2,903 locations by Sunday evening — thus leaving far behind this weekend’s crowded competition, which includes DreamWorks Animation’s Turbo, the Ryan Reynolds / Jeff Bridges actioner R.I.P.D., and the Bruce Willis / Mary-Louise Parker action sequel Red 2. (Update: “The Conjuring: ‘True Story’ Horror Movie Box Office Beats Costlier Competition.”) If Subers is right, the $20 million-budgeted The Conjuring will boast the biggest domestic opening ever for an original R-rated horror movie — that is,...

Based on the real-life case files of ghost-hunters Ed and Lorraine Warren (played here by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga), "The Conjuring" sees "Saw" director James Wan leave gore behind for throwback '70s horror, in both its period setting and old-school aesthetic. But it's not the first haunted house flick to bank on the husband and wife team's help to terrify audiences - their previous investigations-turned-movies also include "The Haunting in Connecticut" and, most famously, "The Amityville Horror."
So while the movie's scares are familiar, they're also remarkably effective, and thanks to strong reviews from audiences and critics, there's reportedly already a sequel to "The Conjuring" in the works. Which means it sounds like the famed paranormal investigators will soon be looking for new ghosts to bust. But what separates a garden-variety spooky house with creaky floorboards and bad plumbing from a movie-worthy one? Follow this handy guide to find out.

What truly scares usc In my opinion, it's largely the fear of the unknown. It's why when horror movies show us what's behind the curtain our fear begins to subside. A good horror director will use the idea of the unknown to their advantage, increasing the fear factor, while also improving the production's bottom line. In recent history director James Wan (Saw, Insidious) has used the fear of the unknown to his advantage and he does so again with The Conjuring, something of a Paranormal Activity meets The Exorcist, supernatural thriller certain to give even the most seasoned horror fan the chills. Like many horror films before it, The Conjuring makes use of the idea it is based on a true story. In this instance, the story of the Perron family who bought a place in the early '70s in Harrisville, Rhode Island that eventually turned into ten years living among the dead.

It's great to see such confidence in a genre project that you can greenlight a sequel before the first installment has even hit theatres. James Wan's 'The Conjuring' arrives in Us theatres this Friday and due to some early positive feedback from the preview screenings scribes Carey and Chad Hayes have been rehired to pen the sequel.
