Michael J. Fox, the Hollywood star who became a powerful advocate for medical research, will be the subject of a new documentary from Oscar-winning filmmaker Davis Guggenheim. Apple Original Films has nabbed the rights to the movie, which is currently in production in New York, Los Angeles and Vancouver.
The film, which is still untitled, will chart Fox’s extraordinary career, documenting his rise to the pinnacle of the movie and television business thanks to roles in “Family Ties” and “Back to the Future.” It will also look at Fox’s struggles with celebrity once he climbed those heights, as well as his diagnosis, at 29, with Parkinson’s disease and the impact that had on his personal and professional life. Apple Original Films has landed an untitled feature film about the life of beloved actor and advocate Michael J. Fox, from Oscar-winning filmmaker Davis Guggenheim. The film is currently in production in New York, Los Angeles and Vancouver.
The film, directed by Guggenheim, which will incorporate documentary, archival and scripted elements, will recount Fox’s extraordinary story in his own words — the improbable tale of an undersized kid from a Canadian army base who rose to the heights of stardom in 1980s Hollywood. The account of Fox’s public life, full of nostalgic thrills and cinematic gloss, will unspool alongside his never-before-seen private journey, including the years that followed his diagnosis, at twenty-nine, with Parkinson’s disease. Intimate and honest, and produced with unprecedented access to Fox and his family, the film will chronicle Fox’s personal and professional triumphs and travails, and will explore what happens when an incurable optimist confronts an incurable disease.

An untitled nonfiction feature film about the life of beloved “Back to the Future” star Michael J. Fox is in production at Apple Original Films, the streamer announced on Wednesday. Filming, helmed by Oscar and Emmy-winning director Davis Guggenheim, is already underway in New York, Los Angeles and Vancouver, Canada.
Neither billed as a biopic nor a documentary feature, the pic will incorporate “documentary, archival and scripted elements,” unraveling Fox’s story “in his own words.” It will trace the veteran actor’s “improbable” rise to Hollywood stardom in the 1980s blockbuster era, as well as explore Fox’s adolescence on a Canadian army base.
The project will also delve into the intimate details of Fox’s publicly known Parkinson’s disease — an incurable progressive nervous system disorder that affects movement and often features tremors — with which he was diagnosed at 29.

The American Film Institute said Tuesday that it has added the world premieres of Apple Original Films’ Swan Song, starring two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali, and Halle Berry’s directorial debut Bruised from Netflix to this year’s AFI Fest lineup.
When Netflix picked up Bruised at the Toronto Film Festival last year, the pic was in its unfinished form, and its debut in November will be the first time it’s being shown to moviegoers in polished form.
Swan Song and Bruised will screen in-person at the Tcl Chinese Theatre on Friday, November 12, and Saturday, November 13, respectively.
Swan Song reps Oscar winner Benjamin Cleary’s (Stutterer) feature directorial debut and follows Ali as a man diagnosed with a terminal illness who is presented with an alternative solution by his doctor (Glenn Close) to shield his family from grief. The pic also stars Naomie Harris, Awkwafina and Adam Beach. Cleary wrote the screenplay.

It was a triumphant second weekend for indie Stillwater from Focus Features, which hit the $10 million mark in 2,611 theatres (up by 80) and 233 Dma’s in North America, where it was no. 5. The Matt Damon-starrer held up strongly from its debut, dipping 45% — compared with a 64% drop for The Green Knight and a 55% decline for Jungle Cruise. Stillwater’s run may not be not specialty-small, but deserves a shout-out here for a standout performance. The complex drama garnered Damon a standing ovation in Cannes but had some concerned at the film’s theatrical prospects in a wide-release battle against big studio franchises on one hand and smaller arthouse fare on the other.
Damon plays an unemployed Oklahoma oil rig worker who travels to Marseille to help his daughter (Abigail Breslin) who’s in prison for murder. The film continued to resonate in the South and Midwest with the top five highest-grossing...

Jennifer Fox, Emmy nominated helmer of the HBO’s The Tale, has signed on to write and direct the film adaptation to The Other Dr. Gilmer book, which was acquired by Concordia Studio to develop and produce, along with Social Construct Films and Maven Screen Media.
The soon to be published book from Dr. Benjamin Gilmer follows a beloved small town physician, Dr. Vince Gilmer, who murders his father for mysterious reasons. Dr. Vince Gilmer’s successor, coincidentally named Dr. Benjamin Gilmer, becomes obsessed with understanding what drove Vince to snap. A true crime investigation coupled with a medical mystery, and a social justice crusade, ultimately changes the course of both their lives.
Gilmer’s story is said to touch on a wide range of important social issues such as the need for universal health care, access to mental health care, and how the lack thereof contributes to mass incarceration.

Jay-z’s Roc Nation and Participant Media have joined the eagerly anticipated TV adaptation of Malorie Blackman’s popular novel series “Noughts & Crosses” as exec producers. Roc Nation will also handle the soundtrack for the show, which is set in an alternate world where there is a ruling class of people of African descent and white people suffer discrimination and prejudice.
“Poldark” producer Mammoth Screen is making the series for the BBC, which now has two major U.S. partners, including socially conscious producer Participant Media. Blackman said Roc Nation and Participant will “bring an extra dimension to the production that I can’t wait to see – and hear.”
The series follows two young people, Sephy and Callum, who are divided by their color but united by burning injustice. Sephy is a “Cross,” a member of the black ruling class and daughter of a prominent politician. Callum is a “Nought,...

Speaking this weekend at the Zurich Summit (29), Participant Media president Jonathan King explained why Alfonso Cuaron’s Golden Lion winning awards season contender Roma is bypassing a conventional theatrical release in favour of going down the Netflix route.
King revealed that Participant, which financed and produced the feature “didn’t really tell anyone” that the company was making Roma - and backed the film on spec, without any distribution in place. It screens in Zurich this week.

14th edition of festival got underway on Thursday (Sept 27).
Fresh from their success winning Toronto’s coveted audience award, Green Book director Peter Farrelly and actor Viggo Mortensen kicked off the 2018 Zurich Film Festival on Thursday night (Sept 27).
The crowdpleasing film, now a frontrunner in the Oscar race given its Toronto success, is adapted from the true story of an accomplished black pianist (Mahershala Ali) and his Italian-American driver (Mortensen) navigating a tour of the racist Deep South in the early 1960s.
At the Zurich press conference yesterday, Farrelly said he hoped the film could impact people’s attitudes today.
