- He was awarded the Nobel prize in chemistry in 1999 for his pioneering work in femtochemistry, the study of chemical reactions in ultra-short time scales. He was the first Arab scientist to win a Nobel.
- He received his BS and MS at the University of Alexandria in Egypt, and got his PhD at the University of Pennsylvania. He held the Linus Pauling Chair of Chemical Physics at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).
- He developed the field of four-dimensional electron microscopy, which helps capture fleeting processes and turn them into a type of digital film.
- He was the recipient of over 100 international prizes and awards, including the Order of the Grand Collar of the Nile, Egypt's highest state honor, and the Order of Légion d'Honneur of France. Postage stamps have been issued in his honor.
