ABC is developing an anthology series based around historical women of the civil rights movement, ABC entertainment president Karey Burke said Monday during the Television Critics Association press tour.
The series, titled “Women of the Movement,” is a chronology of the civil rights movement as told from a black woman’s point of view, with the first season centered on Mamie Till, who devoted her life to seeking justice in her son Emmett’s name following his murder in the Jim Crow South.
The first season will be based on the book, “Emmett Till: The Murder That Shocked the World and Propelled the Civil Rights Movement,” by Devery S. Anderson. During her executive session, Burke added that the network is eyeing a potential second season to focus on Rosa Parks.

In the latest example of music business figures entering the rapidly expanding cannabis business, Roc Nation co-founder and CEO Jay Brown has joined the Board of Directors of MedMen, the aggressive farm-to-counter retail chain dubbed the Apple Store or Starbucks of pot dispensaries.
Twenty-year music industry veteran Brown, who has worked with partner Jay-z to develop the careers of any number of Grammy-recognized artists (among them Rihanna and DJ Khaled), joins the likes of Willie Nelson, Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa, Melissa Etheridge and Damian Marley in promoting cannabis enterprises.
MedMen co-founder and CEO Adam Bierman reiterated the company’s lifestyle approach to selling cannabis. “Marijuana today is less about smoking a joint, and much more about culture,” he said in announcing Brown’s arrival. “It is about healthier, safer choices for mind and body, and community. For more than two decades, Jay Brown has had his finger on the pulse of pop culture.

Phil McIntyre, longtime manager for Nick Jonas and Demi Lovato, has been named President of Management at Roc Nation, the entertainment firm founded by Jay-z which represents Rihanna, DJ Khaled, Mariah Carey, J. Cole and a slew of additional artists, personalities and sports stars.
The appointment was announced by Roc Nation CEO and co-founder Jay Brown. It is a new position for the 10-year-old company, but McIntyre’s Philymack has been partnered with Roc Nation since 2015.
Word had been circulating in recent weeks that McIntyre, whose plate is already full with his own management concern (clients also include Iggy Azalea and the Band Perry) and an executive producer position on ABC’s “American Idol,” was headed to a senior role involving Roc Nation’s management arm, which counts more than 24 music acts on its roster.
Roc Nation recently took on Miguel, Robin Thicke and Elle King, along with their respective managers,...
