“Tura!” is the true life story of cult movie icon & burlesque dancer Tura Satana, chopped straight from the pages of her handwritten memoir. Best known as the star of Russ Meyer’s classic film Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, Tura stunned 1960’s movie audiences as the sexy, dominant, fast-driving, karate-wielding lesbian gang leader Varla. Although this article doesn’t explicitly contain any significant spoilers, it is always advisable to watch a film before reading about it too deeply.
In his own words, the intended audience for Russ Meyer’s films was “some guy…in the theatre with semen seeping out of his dick.” His work in the sexploitation subgenre is credited with bringing nudity and sleaze into the American cinematic mainstream and his gravestone declares him ‘King of the Nudies.’ And yet his magnum opus has been reclaimed as a work of female empowerment, a subversive text that has inspired music videos by the Spice Girls and Janet Jackson, lent its name to a New York women’s bar and even been referenced in Xena and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Despite dismissing it after a first viewing in the mid-1970s as “retrograde male-objectification of women’s bodies and desires further embellished by a...

Varla, Rosie and Billy spend their days as gogo dancers for a night club, dancing for dollars in front of ogling screeching men. When they meet an old man and his two unstable sons, they decide to make themselves at home in their old farm when Varla learns the old man may be hiding a large cache of money. The Damage: Russ Meyer was a man who loved breasts. He surely enjoyed the female form, but mostly he loved breasts. He fetishized them, worshipped them, and centered his entire career making films that idolized them in some form or another. Russ Meyer is one of...

As you’ve probably heard, the great Tura Satana died last week. I wrote up a Badass Hall Of Fame blog about her yesterday with a heavy heart.
As sad as we all are, we are fortunate that we had a chance to not only spend a little time with her back in 2002, but see her in her element. Yesterday, as we reminisced about her, I asked Alamo founder Tim League to write down a few of his memories. Here they are:
The first time I met Tura Satana was back in 2002. We brought the three leads from Faster Pussycat Kill! Kill! to Austin for a “Rock and Roll Drive-In” outdoor event (Lori Williams missed her flight and didn’t make the show). We took over the Longhorn Speedway, an old abandoned racetrack south of town that used to feature figure 8 racing, something of a rarity where the cars actually criss-cross in the center,...

Tura Satana, a B-movie bad girl and former exotic dancer who gained cult status for her role in the 1965 Russ Meyer movie Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! has died of heart failure at age 72.
The Los Angeles Times reports Satana's death was confirmed by her manager, Siouxzan Perry, who said Satana died Friday at a hospital in Reno, Nev.
In Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! Satana played Varla, the leader of a trio of aggressive, thrill-seeking go-go dancers and ends up killing a man with her bare hands. The women, including Haji and Lori Williams, then set out to rob a wealthy older man who lives on a desert ranch with his two sons.

I don’t know about you, but when someone mentions the term “Cinematic Female Badass”, I think if Tura Satana’s role of Varla in Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! Sure, there have been recent female badasses that have graced the silver screen, but no one was as seductive and menacing as Varla. I had the chance to meet her a few times back in 2008 in Toronto and here in St. Louis. My friend Tom Stockman even helped bring her to the Way Out Club to hang out, watch Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! and even judge a burlesque contest. I’m truly saddened to give you the news that Tura Satana has passed on. The star of Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! and Astro-Zombies died yesterday at 5pm in Reno, Nv at the age of 75. When I met her 3 years ago she was still full of spunk and didn’t take shit from anyone.
