The Wittliff Collections at Texas State University hosted a panel discussion last month that included writer/filmmaker Bill Wittliff to celebrate the launch of the second volume in its Lonesome Dove book series with the University of Texas Press.
Wittliff, Lonesome Dove screenwriter and co-executive producer, joined other contributors of A Book on the Making of Lonesome Dove to provide a behind-the-scenes glimpse into both Lary McMurtry's novel and its adaptation into the 1989 Western television miniseries.
"Bill (Wittliff) told me several times on the set, 'If you just take care of Lonesome Dove, Lonesome Dove will take care of us,'" said miniseries extra Stephen Harrigan, who moderated the panel. Harrigan is an author and screenwriter in his own right.
John Spong wrote A Book on the Making of Lonesome Dove, which includes photos from the set from Jeff Wilson and Witliff. Spong and Wilson, also panelists, recounted their experiences...

The 2008 Mumbai attacks saw a level of death, destruction, and mayhem that made it the most severe terrorist attack since September 11, 2001, and it wouldn’t have been possible without American-born David Coleman Headley. Frontline’s “A Perfect Terrorist” examines Headley’s legacy of double-dealing and deceit, but the opinions voiced therein benefit from a factor that often colors after-the-fact testimony: hindsight. “A Perfect Terrorist” has plenty of facts to present when it recounts Headley’s experiences working with the DEA and other agencies both domestically and abroad, but when it interviews his acquaintances and relations of his victims, certain a posteriori arguments come into play. It’s a fantastic profile of an American terrorist, and it offers a look at the Mumbai destruction that many have probably never seen, but there are a few logical jumps that sabotage the presentation’s impact.

Zachary Levi is a huge nerd. The star of NBC’s Chuck started a website in 2010 with David Coleman to show how much he admires and embraces things Picard, Jedi, Tolkein, and all else the comic book guy from The Simpsons would hold near and dear. That website is called The Nerd Machine. Levi describes its purpose as follows: My hope is that this site will become a hub for all things nerd. From gadgets and gizmos aplenty, to whozits and whatzits galore. Entertainment, news, hardware, software, and just all around kickassery....So, let’s start assembling the machine, rallying the troops, and marching toward our ultimate goal of proving once and for all that the geek shall inherit the earth. To help Levi accomplish his Nerdolution (though maybe it’s already been done?), he’s teamed up with Break.com for an original web show culminating in a series...

The verdict is in: David Headley's accomplice is found guilty. Sebastian Rotella reports on the unprecedented glimpse into the terrorist mindset the case offered-and the fallout for U.S.-Pakistan relations.
The terrorism trial of Tahawwur Rana, a minor accomplice whose trial ended Thursday in a guilty verdict on two of three counts, offered an extraordinary look into the underworld of terrorism and espionage in South Asia and had repercussions much closer to home.

The five days of testimony of confessed American terrorist and Pakistani spy David Coleman Headley were unprecedented in a U.S. courtroom. Headley delivered explosive revelations about how officers in Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate (Isi) funded, supported and directed the 2008 Mumbai attacks along with the Lashkar-i-Taiba militant group.

That question hovers over a packed courtroom in Chicago this week as the 50-year-old Pakistani-American businessman resumes his testimony in a high-stakes terrorism trial involving the 2008 Mumbai attacks.
