Sydney Sweeney is an up-and-coming young actor who has taken the world by storm because of her brilliant talent. The American actress has been acting from a young age and she has been around the industry for a long time. She has been doing small roles in many big movies but got her big break because of shows like Everything Sucks! and Sharp Objects, but her stardom reached a new level after her HBO series Euphoria came out.
Sweeney has also enjoyed a healthy film career and has her own production company, Fifty-Fifty Films which recently produced the psychological horror film Immaculate while she did technically appear in a Marvel film known as Madame Web, let’s ignore that film as best we can. So, if you are also a fan of Sweeney and want to all of her best performances here are the 10 best films and shows she has...

The religious horror movie Immaculate, starring Sydney Sweeney and directed by Michael Mohan, wears its horror influences on its sleeves. Neon’s new horror movie is now available on Digital and PVOD, making it easier to catch up with the buzzy title. If you’ve already seen Immaculate, this companion watch guide highlights horror movies to pair with it.
Sweeney stars in Immaculate as Cecilia, a woman of devout faith who is offered a fulfilling new role at an illustrious Italian convent. Cecilia’s warm welcome to the picture-perfect Italian countryside gets derailed soon enough when she discovers she’s become pregnant and realizes the convent harbors disturbing secrets.
From Will Bates’ gothic score to the filming locations and even shot compositions, Immaculate owes a lot to its cinematic influences. Mohan pulls from more than just religious horror, though. While Immaculate pays tribute to the classics, the horror movie surprises...

Immaculate is a movie starring Sydney Sweeney with Álvaro Morte and Simona Tabasco. It is directed by Michael Mohan.
“Immaculate” emerges as a commendable horror flick, blending all the timeless elements against a backdrop that almost never fails to chill its audience: a convent. Set in Italy around the mid-20th century, it provides an atmospheric setting that adds depth to the narrative.
While the plot may tread familiar ground and might not offer many surprises, both lead actress Sydney Sweeney and director Michael Mohan go to great lengths to ensure the film crosses the finish line as both entertaining and, at intervals, genuinely frightening.
Plot Overview
The story introduces us to a novice nun arriving at a new convent. Welcomed by a seemingly kind-hearted priest, she soon plunges into a world of nightmarish visions and sinister thoughts. To her shock, she discovers she’s pregnant, despite vehemently claiming no relations with any man.

Asphalt City (Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire)
I entered Asphalt City at last year’s EnergaCAMERIMAGE festival with nothing but morbid curiosity. Having engendered some rank responses from its Cannes premiere and not secured any known U.S. distributor, Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire’s film had the right kind of bad-object energy one needs at the jetlagged start to their week in a small Polish city. (Or just the comfort I personally get from a Brooklyn-shot feature featuring two Club Random guests.) I walked away boasting complicated, fascinated enthusiasm: nearly every second is ridiculous and never boring, and it doesn’t not deserve to play at a cinematography festival––having the most cinematography counts for something. Starting and ending with a blatant homage to The New World...

Warning: The following contains major spoilers for Immaculate and The First Omen.
Horror has always served as a frightening mirror to reality. In his 1981 treatise on the genre Danse Macabre, author Stephen King writes, “we make up horrors to help us cope with the real ones”; it seems scary movies have been helping us do that since the earliest days of storytelling. Modern examples include The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) now considered a reaction to the 1973 oil crisis, Dawn of the Dead (1978) which stands as a horrific condemnation of consumerism, and the explosion of the torture porn subgenre in the wake of 9/11. As the United States enters a new phase of fear, two films have converged in an exploration of horrific pregnancy caused by religious abuse. As reproduction becomes more dangerous, Michael Mohan’s Immaculate and Arkasha Stevenson’s The First Omen both follow nuns impregnated against their will and...

This is the year of the nunsploitation renaissance and evil pregnancies. Before the best horror show on TV (aka "Evil") comes back for its final season in May, the battle of the nuns happened at the box office between "Immaculate" and "The First Omen." Both are very different yet thematically similar horror films with gruesome and striking takes on the religious horror genre.
"Immaculate" stars Sydney Sweeney as a devout woman who is preparing to take her vows as a nun when she's invited to join an Italian convent. Things get complicated when she discovers she is pregnant seemingly out of the blue, and the young woman slowly uncovers the horrific secrets that the convent is hiding. What ensues is a film with some stunningly shocking imagery, which works thanks to the power of Sydney Sweeney.

Major spoilers for "Immaculate" and "The First Omen" follow.
There's a history of movies with oddly similar premises premiering within months of each other. "Armageddon" and "Deep Impact" both hit theaters in the summer of 1998, much like the Earth-shattering meteors featured in both films. The year before, there was "Volcano" and "Dante's Peak." 2022 gave us not one but two "Pinocchio" movies (with a clean victory for Guillermo del Toro's version).
This past month saw the latest case of dueling movies: "Immaculate," released on March 22, 2024, and "The First Omen," released on April 5, 2024. Both films are about American nuns who fly off to a new life in Italy. Once they arrive at the convent, the young sister discovers a sinister conspiracy at work and becomes pregnant via an unnatural conception. Unlike Mother Mary, the fruits of their wombs are not blessed.

This article contains multitudes of The First Omen and Immaculate spoilers.
One cannot envy the strange limbo Arkasha Stevenson’s The First Omen finds itself in this weekend. A macabre and fiendishly urgent spin on old school religious horror, it’s a film dripping with passion and fire despite its origins as a franchise installment. Unfortunately, it’s also a movie that uses an Italian setting awash in crucifixes and constrictive nun habits during a moment where another zeitgeisty chiller appears to be doing the same thing in the theater next door.
Yes, there is plenty of overlap between The First Omen and Michael Mohan and Sydney Sweeney’s Immaculate, right down to the setup of a sheltered American novice traveling to the Eternal City to take her final vows to Christ, and instead finding a lot of white collared men demanding a controlling interest in the marriage. And yet,...

Typical. You wait years for a movie about a teenage American nun who becomes mysteriously pregnant when she travels to an Italian nunnery and then two come along at once. Consequently, The First Omen – a prequel to the 1976 horror classic – has had its thunder stolen somewhat by Michael Mohan’s excellent Sydney Sweeney-starring nunsploitation picture Immaculate (which is still in cinemas), but still delivers its fair share of tense atmospherics, jump scares and impressive body horror.
The film begins in 1971, with virginal young American novice Margaret (Nell Tiger Free) travelling to Rome, where she’s met by kindly Cardinal Lawrence (Bill Nighy), before beginning her apprenticeship at the Vizzardeli Orphanage, where she will eventually take her vows. Soon, Margaret’s...

When compared to "classier" Satanic contemporaries like "Rosemary's Baby" and "The Exorcist," Richard Donner's 1976 hit "The Omen" is the pulpiest of the lot. "The Omen" had no interest in the sexist panic of the former, nor the religious angst of the latter, settling instead in the realm of spooky thrillers, replete with cool kills, portentous Satanic language, and an awesome score (a score that brought Jerry Goldsmith his only Oscar). There's no ambiguity to "The Omen," being clear from the start that Gregory Peck and Lee Remick are indeed raising the Antichrist. The pop Satanism "The Omen" introduced into the lexicon has now become standard horror fare, and was even spoofed at length in the TV series "Good Omens."
"The Omen" spawned one okay sequel ("Damien: Omen II" in 1978), one risibly bad sequel ("The Final Conflict" in 1981), and one miserably bad sequel ("Omen IV: The Awakening" in 1991) before succumbing...

Nell Tiger Free is a terrified nun who discovers a dark secret at the heart of the Catholic church. Here’s our The First Omen review.

Now that Daily Dead readers have had a chance to check out Immaculate in theaters, I am excited to share my recent interview with director Michael Mohan! We talked in detail about the film last week, from the journey the project took to get to the big screen, to working with Sydney Sweeney, and the ending everyone is talking about:
[Spoiler Warning]
What was the journey this project took to get into production? I understand it took a little bit of time and I'm curious about when you got involved in the process.
So it was the longest process for Andrew [Lobel], the writer. He came up with this about 18 years ago and it almost got made at a studio, where Sydney had auditioned for the part. She had multiple callbacks, but ultimately the film ended up falling apart.
Years passed and Sydney was tracking the project, seeing what was happening with it.

In his review of the new horror film Immaculate (you can read it Here), JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray said the movie – which reunites Sydney Sweeney with Michael Mohan, who directed her in the erotic thriller The Voyeurs and the Netflix series Everything Sucks! – is “a decent throwback to Dario Argento-style Italian horror movies.” During a recent post-screening Q&a at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Boston Seaport, Mohan also revealed that one particular scene in the movie was inspired by the work one of my favorite grindhouse era filmmakers, Jack Hill – and that same scene also had to be salvaged with the help of Saw X director Kevin Greutert!
Our friends at Bloody Disgusting shared the information from the Q&A, reporting that Mohan said, “The biggest scene that did not work and I’m still not happy with is the scene when Isabelle tries to drown Cecilia. I studied a...

From the late 1960s to the 1970s, religious horror cinema reigned. Free of the censorious Hays Code, Hollywood could be transgressive again. Americans were generally more Christian 50 years ago than they are today, so scary movies where the horror literally comes from the Devil? Those struck right at the heart of the public.

2024 is shaping up to be a great year to be a horror fan and certified Sicko™ because every day seems to bring a fresh bit of news guaranteed to scare the squares. Michael Mohan and Sydney Sweeney's "Immaculate" is causing a moral panic among conservatives, "Late Night with the Devil" is allegedly bringing in dollar amounts that match the mark of the beast, and it was recently revealed that "The First Omen" had to fight with the Motion Picture Association to earn an R-rating after receiving five separate Nc-17 hits. During an interview with Fangoria, director Arkasha Stevenson talked about making the sixth film in "The Omen" franchise and the first prequel film in the series, which included a "long battle" with the MPA over the film's content.

Get ready to clutch your rosaries and gasp your Hail Marys, because Immaculate has risen to theatres, proving itself to be the unholy offspring of gothic horror and cult craziness we didn’t know we needed. Immaculate takes us on a perilous pilgrimage of a young nun who finds her sanctuary is anything but. Directed with a gothic touch by Michael Mohan, and starring the doe-eyed and scream-filled Sidney Sweeney, Immaculate weaves a tale of faith, terror, and unholy revelations.

Upon her arrival at a picturesque Italian convent, an American nun, Sister Cecilia (Sydney Sweeney), finds herself entangled in a web of divine terror. A fish out of water and without a full grasp of the language, Cecilia leans on the well-meaning intentions of her hosts and keepers, proving to be a grave mistake. Mohan...

The Sydney Sweeney nunsploitation flick "Immaculate" is having one hell of an opening weekend. Not only does the film now hold the distinction of earning Neon's biggest opening weekend ever domestically, but the borderline Satanic panic coming from evangelical conservatives losing their minds over the film has been the type of grassroots marketing campaign a PR can only dream of. After the now-deleted account @AuroraFaced posted the best possible pull quote for the film by writing on X (formerly Twitter), "Libs saw how the anti-woke crowd embraced Sydney Sweeney as their new darling and right away had to shove her in this blasphemous, Satanic, feminist, pro-abortion, anti-life movie degrading Christians! This movie also debases Mary, Mother of the Christ!", Neon, who distributed the film, quickly turned the post into a viral poster, and most certainly inspired some ticket purchases in the process.

Sony had the big win at the box office over the weekend, with "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" taking the top spot on the charts, but additional context puts some qualifiers around that movie's win, since a $45 million opening weekend haul is a mixed bag for a film with a $100 million budget. While ghosts were being busted, though, two smaller horror movies had downright incredible weekends for their respective distributors. Neon's "Immaculate" and IFC's "Late Night with the Devil," bolstered by very strong buzz, had record-setting debuts for both labels. Put simply, horror stays winning.
Director Michael Mohan's "Immaculate" led the way with a $5.3 million debut, good enough to land at number four on the charts just above Mark Wahlberg's "Arthur the King" ($4.3 million). That represents the biggest opening weekend ever for a film released by Neon. Granted, the company behind movies like "Parasite" and "Ferrari" often opens...

To promote the release of Immaculate, director Michael Mohan participated in post-screening Q&As at select locations throughout the weekend. At last night’s showing at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Boston Seaport, an audience query about post-production challenges led the filmmaker to reveal how the editor of Saw helped save one of the film’s horror sequences.
“The biggest scene that did not work and I’m still not happy with is the scene when Isabelle tries to drown [Cecilia, played by Sydney Sweeney]. I studied a lot of ’70s exploitation movies featuring two women getting in fights, and I wanted it to be like a more direct homage to a genre known as nunsploitation,” Mohan explained.
“I studied some of Jack Hill’s work. Typically what they would do with those types of scenes is they would leave them in a medium-wide shot and just let it play out. The...

[Editor’s note: The following story contains major spoilers for the ending of “Immaculate.”]
If you’ve been praying to the genre movie gods for a pregnant final girl to wreak bloody havoc in the last act of a horror movie, “Immaculate” has answered you.
While the first hour or so of director Michael Mohan’s “Immaculate” is laden with familiar jump scares and ominous Catholic portent, all hell breaks loose in the last act. Sister Cecilia (Sydney Sweeney), who embraced religious piety after surviving nearly drowning in a frozen lake as a young girl, is the new nun in town at an exclusive Roman convent that doubles as a hospice care center for dying nuns in their last days. Despite coming to the convent a virgin, Cecilia is stunned to discover she’s pregnant.

“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” kicked off with $16 million in North American ticket sales across Friday and preview screenings in 4,345 theaters. That nearly matches the $16.6 million that its predecessor “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” earned on its opening day in November 2021. Sony’s sci-fi comedy sequel will easily top domestic charts, though its work isn’t done yet considering its $100 million production budget.
That’s an uptick in the price tag from “Afterlife,” which cost $75 million before marketing and distribution. That franchise revival nearly tripled its $44 million domestic opening weekend, playing well through the Thanksgiving holiday to finish with $129 million and $204 million worldwide. Similarly, “Frozen Empire” could boost its fortunes with Easter at the end of the month.
Reviews have been leaning more lukewarm compared to the so-so received “Afterlife.” Early moviegoers are also a little cooler on the franchise now, with audience survey firm Cinema Score turning in a B+ grade. (“Afterlife” scored an A-.

“Immaculate” marks the latest project to star Sydney Sweeney, who is known for television shows like “Euphoria” and “The White Lotus” and Sony’s latest superhero endeavor “Madame Web.” Sweeney also made up half of the dynamic duo — alongside Glen Powell — that brought “Anyone but You” to box office success, and just as she produced that rom-com, she’s a producer on the horror film “Immaculate.”

Spooky titles lead the new openers at the UK and Ireland box office this weekend with Sony’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire unleashing into 687 cinemas.
The fifth addition to the ghoul-hunting franchise is slightly up from its predecessor Ghostbusters: Afterlife which opened in 670 locations in 2021. That film had an opening weekend of £3.7m and ended shy of £12m. It also has more locations than Paul Feig’s female reboot which debuted in 581 sites in 2016 before making £4.4m in its opening weekend.
The first Ghostbusters made an impressive £12.4m at the box office back in 1984 while Ghostbusters II scored £8.3m in 1989.

Convent-set movies occupy a storied place in cinema history—one too vast to attempt summarization in this review. But it’s no matter: Immaculate stands to be a minor entry in both the crowded genre and in Sydney Sweeney’s present ascension to movie stardom. Sweeney produces and recruited Michael Mohan to direct Immaculate after their previous collaborations on TV series Everything Sucks! and erotic-thriller throwback The Voyeurs.
Narratively, Immaculate owes more to Dario Argento’s Suspiria than any nunsploitation picture. The setups are essentially identical: wide-eyed American girl (Sweeney as Sister Cecilia in this case) heads to an all-girls dormitory in Italy. Nefarious plotting by shadowy leaders is unveiled over the course of the narrative.
Both films contain a cold open that sees a young girl attempt escape before meeting her doom. Immaculate’s opening is quite tense, its best sequence. In the aftermath of this chilling intro, the...

Michael Mohan revealed that his new horror film, Immaculate, originally had a very traditional ending. More on it below.
Warning: Mild spoilers for Immaculate’s ending follow
Sydney Sweeney stars in Michael Mohan’s religious horror film Immaculate, which is now in cinemas – we gave it a glowing four stars in our review. Sweeney plays Sister Cecilia, who transfers to an Italian convent but quickly finds herself miraculously pregnant.
In our chat with Mohan, the director revealed that the script originally had a very different ending.
“Originally, this was a studio movie, and it had a much more traditional ending, a very conservative ending,” he said.
If you’ve seen Immaculate, you know how strange that sounds. The current ending of Immaculate is thoroughly shocking, but also very impressive. The final minutes of the film follow Sweeney, in an uninterrupted shot, as she commits something horrific and, depending who you ask,...

Sydney Sweeney’s presence in any film is hard to ignore. With her distinctive millennial drawl and unmistakable presence, she often brings a piece of herself into the characters she portrays. Whether being real life whistle-blower in the impressive Reality, to playing Glen Powell’s love interest in Anyone But You, Sweeney is fast becoming the Julia Roberts of her era, which is why it is so exciting to see her taking risks with her ever growing career with the excellent new horror, Immaculate.
In the film, Sweeney stars as Sister Cecilia, a virginal young nun mysteriously impregnated and imprisoned by a fanatical convent convinced she carries the second coming of Christ. Directed by Michael Mohan, this film takes audiences on a wild ride through themes of religious oppression, superstition and feminine autonomy,
From the outset, it’s clear that Sweeney’s star power adds a layer of complexity to the character of Sister Cecilia.
