Ever since Friday the 13th helped solidify the concept of the summer camp being a place to just massacre teenagers, we’ve never been short on the supply of new killers and people for them to kill. Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight aka W lesie dzis nie zasnie nikt, is a new Polish addition to the list, but does it offer anything new?
When a group of technology-dependant teenagers are sent to offline camp they are forced to hand over all their phones and tablets to the councillors. Sent off on a hiking trip for a few days, they find themselves not only fending off nature, but a set of monstrous twins whose only aim seems...

Silence
Martin Scorsese's anticipated new missionary drama "Silence" is aiming for a November release through Paramount Pictures according to Screen Daily. Scorsese's film, an adaptation of the Shusaku Endo novel, is not expected to be done in time for Cannes next month, but the date suggests a Venice or Tiff premiere could well be on the cards.
Digital Retouching
The same technology that was used to render Brad Pitt at various ages in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" has expanded and improved exponentially to the point that digital 'retouching' has become a major thing.
Vulture has done a feature piece on the technology where the surprise is how prevalently the technology is employed - not just to smooth out wrinkles but to add muscle definition, adjust shape, change performances, change actors body structure, replace whole actors and editing together elements of different takes. It's a must read piece.

For the 2013 edition, this year’s dozen includes some familiar names and fairly diverse international mix and at the top of the list we find Andrew Renzi who’ll be at the fest the week later with his short Karaoke! and will be workshopping his feature film Franny. Russell Harbaugh who brought his queasy The Celebration-esque short Rolling on the Floor Laughing to the fest the year before, will also be receiving support on his debut entitled, Love After Love. Jan Kwiecinski whose most recent short was part of The Fourth Dimension project will tackle The Incident, and K’naan, an artist who is already had practice at...

Grolsch Film Works and Vice Films today announce the global YouTube release of the new space-and-time-questioning omnibus film, The Fourth Dimension, with segments by Jan Kwiecinski (Poland), Alexey Fedorchenko (Russia) and Harmony Korine (Us).
They were reportedly tasked by Vice Magazine’s own Eddy Moretti with creating their own 30-minute shorts, shooting in each of their native countries and exploring the notion of a ‘fourth dimension’.
The short behind Korine’s segment will see Val Kilmer playing a character named ‘Val Kilmer,’ a motivational speaker at a fictional ‘Lotus Community Centre’, set in Nashville, Tennessee.
The omnibus film has been showed at more than 30 festivals including San Francisco, Tribeca and Edinburgh.
Fedorchenko shot his chapter in Ekateringburg, 20 hours from Moscow. His short, Silent Souls follows the journey of a reclusive time-traveller Grigory who is relentlessly attempting to reach the ‘fourth dimension’.

There's not much you need to know about the omnibus "The Fourth Dimension" except that it features a short directed by Harmony Korine, and starring Val Kilmer as a motivation speaker who has awesome secrets. And while it might seem like the kind of film that would have to finish doing the festival rounds, then get picked up by an obscure indie outlet before it begins to play a year later, once a week, at your local arthouse, the folks at Vice Films seem to have circumvented that route. They've gone ahead and dropped the full "The Fourth Dimension" online for your viewing pleasure, so you might want to bookmark this for later when you're at home. And in case you're wondering, Korine's short leads things off if you don't really care about the other entries by Alexey Fedorchenko and Jan Kwiecinski. Though in our review of the film(s...

Anthology featuring a series of offbeat films from America's Harmony Korine, Russian auteur Alexey Fedorchenko and Polish director Jan Kwiecinski, each taking a character on a journey which leads them to reappraise life. In Korine's offering, an admirably up-for-it Val Kilmer subversively plays an unhinged celebrity-turned-motivational speaker. Elsewhere, Igor Sergeev plays a frustrated scientist whose investigation of time travel is constantly stymied and a group of slackers wander a village unaware of the approaching deluge.

The 2012 installment of the Edinburgh International Film Festival runs from June 20th to July 1st, and marks the return of major awards of incarnations prior to 2011′s edition. This year’s line-up is distinctive in its feeling of being a heavily curated affair courtesy of artistic director Chris Fujiwara, rather than just a selection of films out in a few months time (though there’s still a few of those, obviously). I will be providing Sound on Sight’s first ever coverage of Eiff over the coming weeks, and this year’s line-up is an especially enticing blend of buzz films, intriguing retrospectives, global or international premieres, and an array of eclectic content.

Director: Benh Zeitlin Writers: Benh Zeitlin, Lucy Alibar Starring: Quvenzhané Wallis, Dwight Henry, Jonshel Alexander, Marilyn Barbarin, Kaliana Brower, Henry D. Coleman, Joseph Brown, Nicholas Clark The light in Benh Zeitlin's Beast of the Southern Wild is similar to the light that Terrence Malick captures in his films. In Zeitlin's film, the light is imprisoned within the frames of a portrait that depicts a world suffering from a peculiar catastrophe. It haunts my mind and disturbs my soul, but I like it. From the very first scene in which she appears, I am a bit fascinated with Zeitlin’s lead protagonist and her ill father who appears a few minutes later. They inhabit two old and devastated, wooden cottages in the forest near the river. Hushpuppy (Quvenzhané Wallis) is named after an animal. She is like a little beast of this southern wild. She is sweet and dreadfully intelligent.

Having been around for eighteen years, the Chicago Underground Film Festival has continually changed what it defines as “underground.”
So its 19th annual edition, which will be held on May 31 to June 7 at the Gene Siskel Film Center, feels like its most experimental edition in recent years.
While things kick off on the 31st with the Vice-produced anthology film The Fourth Dimension by Alexsei Fedorchenko, Harmony Korine and Jan Kwiecinski, the rest of the fest is packed with feature-length and short experimental work, documentaries and alternative narratives.
Some of the experimental feature highlights include the vastly prolific Robert Todd‘s Master Plan, which examines theories of modern housing from private residences to prisons; Australia’s two-person art collective Soda_Jerk’s epic rip on media piracy, Hollywood Burn; Michael Kosakowski’s compendium on murder fantasies, Zero Killing; L.A. filmmaker Daniel Martinico’s meditation on the acting process, Ok, Good...

While things kick off on the 31st with the Vice-produced anthology film The Fourth Dimension by Alexsei Fedorchenko, Harmony Korine and Jan Kwiecinski, the rest of the fest is packed with feature-length and short experimental work, documentaries and alternative narratives.

In the omnibus film The Fourth Dimension, Brooklyn based Vice Magazine along with commercial company Grolsch Film Works dispatched three filmmakers to tackle on a subject matter that must have been elicited from a hazy drug fueled debate. At least that is how it seems to deal with its abstract subject matter, the concept of the fourth dimension otherwise known as the unification of space and time, or space-time continuum. Apropos to cinema, the concept seems to fit perfectly and offers up a treasure trove of possibilities both scientific and philosophical. But the lack of cohesiveness to each short film make the overall structure a chore to get through and will leave you scratching your head in bewilderment rather than having deep philosophical conversations about space and time.
The opening short film, and arguably the best of the bunch, is Harmony Korine’s The Lotus Community Workshop starring Val Kilmer as himself.

Harmony Korine, Alexey Fedorchenko and Jan Kwiecinski each take a directorial segment in this trio of short (around 30mins each) films based around the concept of the fourth dimension. Each has its own distinctive style and tone but in so doing reveals the problem of buffet filmmaking: if you only like one of the dishes, I’m sorry but you’re actually stuck with the other two as well.

Last Friday night, “The Fourth Dimension” made its world premiere at the San Francisco International Film Festival, a collaborative film that we thought got satisfying results out of its premise. In attendance were the set of directors responsible for the three short films created based on a collection of random instructions generated by Vice Films producer Eddy Moretti in a collaboration with Grolsch Film Works. The directors tapped included Harmony Korine (“Trash Humpers,” “Gummo”), Aleksei Fedorchenko (“Silent Souls”) and Polish director Jan Kwiecinski, making his big screen debut. We sat down to talk to Harmony Korine and Val Kilmer -- who stars in Korine’s film as a ridiculous motivational speaker -- about their short, “Lotus Community Workshop.”
The description of Korine creating a film within a structured set of rules may sound familiar. Back in 1999 Korine created his sophomore feature narrative “Julien Donkey-Boy” under the notably restrictive rules of the Dogme 95 movement.

Awesome secrets. Light and fluffy. Cotton candy. These are words you're going to be hearing a whole lot more should you tune into "The Fourth Dimension," the Tribeca Film Festival flick from Vice mastermind Eddy Moretti collecting short movies from directors Harmony Korine, Aleksei Fedorchenko, and Jan Kwiecinski.
The film is split into three segments, but if it's star power you're after, there's no where better to turn than "The Lotus Community Workshop," Korine's short starring Val Kilmer as — wait for it — Val Kilmer.
"The premise is so great," Kilmer told MTV News about his work in "Fourth Dimension," which mostly involves a fictional version of himself giving a rousing and thoroughly absurd speech to a down-and-out community. "I'm a motivational speaker, but I'm a complete idiot. I still laugh every time I say it!"

Last Friday night, the San Francisco International Film Festival hosted the world premiere of “The Fourth Dimension,” a production born out of a partnership between Vice Films and Grolsch Film Works.
“The Fourth Dimension” consists of three short films (though requests itself be called a feature film) by three directors, Harmony Korine (“Trash Humpers,” “Gummo”), Aleksei Fedorchenko (“Silent Souls”) and new-comer Jan Kwiecinski, all sprung from an identical creative brief. The brief itself is a list of over 50 instructions as incalculable as “You must forget everything you know” or specific as “A stuffed animal needs to make an appearance.” Even if you wanted to skip the context of the film’s roots, you can’t, as the shorts are hitched together with a series of bumpers that recall a number of the brief’s commands.

With summer nearly upon us, studios are heavily pushing their upcoming genre fare with gaudy orange/blue-gradient posters, but among the slew of studio material trying their hardest to stand out, the names Kilmer and Korine together seem the most exciting.
First off, Bradley Rust Gray's film “Jack and Diane” has firmly grabbed the “lesbian werewolf romance” tag in its run up to release, but the poster is playing down its lycan elements for love, by splashing the film's two leads Juno Temple and Riley Keough across the front instead. With Mum and Kylie Minogue (!) providing new music (with the latter in a supporting role as well), it all should make for an interesting ride. The film premiered last week at the Tribeca Film Fest, and you can read our review here.

The poster for the new space-and-time-questioning omnibus film, "The Fourth Dimension," with segments by Jan Kwiecinski, Alexey Fedorchenko and Harmony Korine, debuts today exclusively on Indiewire, ahead of its east coast premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, which launched its tenth edition last night. The film, which was spearheaded by Vice Magazine's Eddy Moretti and Grolsh Film Works, is raising eyebrows not only for the exciting combination of directors, but also for the concept behind Korine's segment, which will see Val Kilmer playing a character named "Val Kilmer." The film made Indiewire's list of the 12 films we're excited to see at Tribeca this year. Go Here to see what else made the cut. Here's the exclusive poster:...

The 55th San Francisco International Film Festival (site), opening tomorrow and running through May 3, "will seem comfortingly the same" to many in the Bay Area, writes G Allen Johnson in the Chronicle:
[A] lavish opening-night film and party, a rocking closing-night film and, in the two weeks between, 172 more films from 45 countries and tributes to distinguished celebrities... But behind the scenes, it's been the most challenging year in the festival's history. Two executive directors of the San Francisco Film Society have died — Graham Leggat, who lost a battle to cancer in August at 51; and his replacement, independent film maestro Bingham Ray, who had two strokes and died at 57 while attending the Sundance Film Festival in January. He had been on the job only 10 weeks.
"It sounds like a line, but it's actually true that for me personally it was a relief that I had something I could throw myself into that...

"The Fourth Dimension" is made up of three short films. The two shorts that aren't by Harmony Korine are directed by lesser-known Polish filmmaker Jan Kwiecinski and Russian filmmaker Alexey Fedorchenko. As with anything launched by Vice Films (in partnership with Grolsh Filmworks), this is no ordinary omnibus project. All of the films had to follow four pages of very specific, weird rules such as "Someone should wear tap shoes" and "There needs to be a character named Mickey House." Director Jan Kwiecinski says: "We were asked to write the stories which explored the fourth dimension. My film is about a group of friends who decide to stay in the abandoned village evacuated by the flood's alarm. Soon they discover that they're not alone..." His background: "I come from moviegoers family. My father is a producer. I was on the film sets from my early childhood. It didn't take me...

This year's Tribeca Film Festival carries one of its strongest line-ups in years. In addition to films from Cannes, Venice, Toronto, Sundance and Berlin circuit, there's also a wealth of U.S. premieres or lesser-known festival movies in the line-up that look just as promising this time around; after a relatively weak SXSW, it looks like the East Coast is getting some of the good stuff.
Below, you'll find 15 films that seem among the most intriguing Tribeca has to offer this year. Of course, we can't speak for their quality as yet, but they certainly look promising at this point at time. And for the record, we haven't included the high-profile opening and closing films -- "The Five-Year Engagement" and "The Avengers" -- partly because they're getting more than enough attention elsewhere, and partly because we've already seen both (although can't review them just yet -- keep your eyes peeled...

The San Francisco International Film Festival unveiled the lineup and program for its 55th edition yesterday, 174 films in all, from 45 countries. Sfiff's not a festival that places much emphasis on premieres, but one that it is touting is The Fourth Dimension, a collection of three shorts by Harmony Korine, Alexsei Fedorchenko (Silent Souls) and Jan Kwiecinski, screening April 20 and four days later at the Tribeca Film Festival (Sfiff runs from April 19 through May 3, Tribeca from April 18 through 29).
The Hollywood Reporter debuted the trailer on Monday; and, for Sfiff, Cheryl Eddy fills us in: "Created under a 'manifesto' whose directives would make Lars von Trier shudder, this three-part film might look on paper like an exercise in forced hipness…. Working under orders tall, whimsical (according to the manifesto, a stuffed animal must make an appearance no matter what) and surreal, Korine's Lotus Community Workshop drops Val Kilmer in an alternate-universe existence...

An anthology film with bizarre “rules” that was produced by Vice Films and Grolsch FilmWorks and directed a trio of international auteurs including Harmony Korine, The Fourth Dimension was always destined to be decidedly odd. But, on the evidence of this newly released trailer, it looks like it could be pretty great too. Korine’s contribution to the film features Val Kilmer as a motivational speaker (called Val Kilmer!) trying to get people to harness their “awesome secrets,” while the rest of the film is comprised of segments from Russian director Alexey Fedorchenko and Poland’s Jan Kwiecinski about a time travel-obsessed scientist and a group of rebellious teens, respectively.

Anything that bears Harmony Korine‘s name can’t be “normal” by any reasonable standard, but this teaser for The Fourth Dimension — an anthology film he partially directed, alongside Alexey Fedorchenko and Jan Kwiecinski — put a strain on the eyebrows, if you know what I mean. The only things I could gather were something about Val Kilmer playing a motivational speaker, establishing a signal, and a group of friends hanging out.
Then I read the Tribeca Film Festival’s description, and… no, still can’t figure this thing out. Read it, anyway:
“A motivational speaker named Val Kilmer (played by Val Kilmer) delivers a sermon at a roller rink. A Russian scientist builds a time machine in his apartment. Four friends stumble upon an abandoned village in the Polish countryside. All are in search of the fourth dimension—whether they know it or not. Weird, ominous, cool, compelling: These three...

Val Kilmer + Harmony Korine + roller rink + motivational speaking....if that doesn't get your cinematic nether regions wet, then we don't know what to tell you. But there is perhaps no pairing more inspired or more insane heading to cinemas this year than the actor and director on their upcoming segment in the omnibus project "The Fourth Dimension." And with a trailer now landing for the movie, we have our first look at their collaboration. And yeah, it looks amazing.
Not much is known plot-wise about the short, except what we just told you, but last fall it was revealed that the filmmakers involved in the project -- which also includes Alexey Fedorchenko and Jan Kwiecinski -- had to adhere to bunch of random Dogme-style rules that included stuff like: This film must be the best film you have ever made; This film has to have real life and You cannot fail.

With The Five-Year Engagement set as the opening title for the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival, they’ve announced more of the line-up today with World Narrative & Documentary Features as the Viewpoint titles. We’ve got the next film from The Exploding Girl director Bradley Rust Gray, Jack and Diane (as well as a first look about featuring Juno Temple, thanks to Styd).
There is a new Harmony Korine short as well Kate Bosworth‘s While We Were Here and The Girl, starring Abbie Cornish. James Franco also has his latest film, Francophrenia, featuring footage from his performance on General Hospital. SXSW kicks off later this week, but once your done slurping the BBQ sauce off your fingers, pack your backs and head north to Manhattan as the Tribeca Film Festival is gearing up to unspool in April. To whet cinephile appetites, organizers have dropped the lineup for the World Narrative Feature Competition, World Documentary Feature Competition and Viewpoints lineups and there are plenty of titles to take note of.
Among the narratives, the anticipated "Jack And Diane" from Bradley Rust Gray will make its world premiere. Starring Juno Temple and Riley Keough, the film takes a teenage lesbian love tale and twists the formula, with one of them revealing she's a werewolf. Add to that a cast rounded out by Dane DeHaan, Jena Malone and pop star Kylie Minogue (as a tattooed lesbian, of course) and you can see why this will be one of the hottest tickets at the fest.
