“Tonally, this is comedy, this is action, with really broad stylistic touches and all this amazing music,” explains Oscar-nominated editor Tom Eagles (“Jojo Rabbit”) about striking the right balance between levity and tragedy in Jeymes Samuel‘s Netflix neo-Western “The Harder They Fall.” “At the end of the day, it’s quite a heartfelt and serious film in which we work our way towards by the end of the movie, so the ending was really important to us. We had to work our way backwards from that and the big reveal at the end and do that in a way that was satisfying but not predictable for the audience, but made sense.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

“The Harder They Fall” is Samuel’s feature directorial debut from a script he co-wrote with Boaz Yakin, for which Samuel also serves as the film’s composer.

“Shadow in the Cloud” is a war picture and a monster movie that dips into one or two more genres before it’s done, but director and co-writer Roseanne Liang (“My Wedding and Other Secrets”) never lets the pace slacken. It’s the kind of movie that has you laughing at the filmmaker’s moxie while also yelping at the suspense.
Liang and co-writer Max Landis get away with any number of bold moves — including sticking their heroine into a cramped, solitary space for the first half-hour and limiting her communication with other characters to voices on a radio channel — but in the end, “Shadow in the Cloud” succeeds so frequently that viewers will be more likely to give some of the lapses in internal logic a pass.

In a stunning upset, Bong Joon Ho’s black comedy “Parasite” almost swept the 92nd Academy Awards on Sunday night, making history along the way.
“Parasite” became the first foreign-language film to win best picture. Its victories in the international feature film, director and original screenplay categories were also a first for a South Korean movie. The film only lost in two categories: film editing and production design. Taika Waititi nabbed adapted screenplay for “Jojo Rabbit.”
“Parasite” beat out Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman,” Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story,” Todd Phillips’ “Joker” — which had led nominations with 11 — Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Sam Mendes’ “1917,” James Mangold’s “Ford v Ferrari,” Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit” and Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” for the top prize.

“It’s mind blowing to be nominated in the same category as Thelma Schoonmaker,” editor Tom Eagles admits about his first ever Oscar nomination for “Jojo Rabbit.” He adds that she “is an editing idol of mine and a god in the field, so yeah I am blown away!” Watch our exclusive video interview with Eagles above.
In writer/director Taika Waititi‘s satirical “Jojo Rabbit,” Johannes “Jojo” Betzler, a young boy (Roman Griffin Davis) during WW2 Germany discovers that his single mother Rosie (Scarlett Johansson) has been hiding Jewish girl Elsa (Thomasin McKenzie) in the attic of their home. Jojo befriends Elsa and confronts his own prejudices while also interacting with his imaginary friend, a neurotic and moronic Adolf Hitler (Waititi), who follows him throughout his journey of self-discovery. The film has been a hit on the awards circuit over the last few months, nabbing six Oscar nominations including...

A couple of small surprises went down last night at the 70th Annual Ace Eddie Awards. The editing Guild is a noteworthy one because of how Best Film Editing ties into Best Pictures at the Academy Awards, so plenty of eyes were on this one last night. Interestingly, neither of the presumed favorites at Ace Eddie emerged victorious, perhaps setting the stage for an Oscar update. Read on for more below, including the full list of winners. While Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) initially seemed like a battle between Ford v Ferrari and The Irishman, especially considering how the later was done by the legendary Thelma Schoonmaker, the Ace Eddie prize went to Parasite, furthering its Oscar credentials. Then, in Best Edited Feature Film (Comedy), the Academy snubbed Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood seemed like the safe bet, but the Guild opted to reward Jojo Rabbit instead. Both just...

Bong Joon Ho’s acclaimed South Korean class-divide thriller “Parasite” and Taika Waititi’s Nazi satire “Jojo Rabbit,” both Editing and Best Picture Oscar nominees, were the surprise feature winners for drama and comedy at the 70th Ace Eddie Awards Friday at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. “Toy Story 4” and “Apollo 11,” meanwhile, took the awards for animation and feature documentary.
However, since Ace has long been an Academy Awards bellwether for editing, “Parasite” (edited by Jinmo Yang) now becomes the Oscar favorite, besting the frontrunner, Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” (edited by three-time Oscar winner Thelma Schoonmaker). And it could even be a harbinger for “Parasite” to make Academy history as the first international feature film to win the coveted Best Picture Oscar.
For Yang, who previously cut “Okja” and “Snowpiercer” with Bong, the director’s avoidance of coverage became even more of an obstacle on “Parasite.

“Parasite” and “Jojo Rabbit” have won the top feature-film awards at the American Cinema Editors’ 70th Annual Ace Eddie Awards, which were handed out on Friday night in Beverly Hills.
Both winners are nominated for the film-editing Oscar, along with “Ford v Ferrari,” “The Irishman” and “Joker.” Although those three films are more typical editing winners, “Parasite” beat them all in the Best Edited Feature Film (Drama) category, while “Jojo Rabbit” topped “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” for Best Edited Feature Film (Comedy).
The win for “Parasite” was only the second Ace Eddie win in history for a non-English film. In 2007, “Babel” tied with “The Departed” for the award.

Chicago – In a sense of deja vu from the recent Golden Globe Awards, the nominees for the 92nd Academy Awards has been named on January 13th, 2020. This breaks a precedent of the last ten years, with the Oscar ceremony moved up to February 9th from it’s usual position in late February to early March.
Nine films were named in the Best Picture category, with “Little Women” and “Ford vs. Ferrari” joining the seven other films recognized by the Golden Globes (including Best Foreign Language Film Globe winner “Parasite”). “Joker” led the numbers game with 11 nominations, with 10 nods for “1917,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “The Irishman.” The Best Actress category was exactly the same as the Globes (Drama), and Leonardo Di Caprio is the only difference in the Best Actor column. As at the Golden Globes, the directing category is the same five men, again snubbing Greta Gerwig for “Little Women.

To deliver the “anti-hate satire” of “Jojo Rabbit,” the story of a German boy who idolizes his own particular vision of Hitler before slowly learning the truth, director Taika Waititi followed a simple philosophy when it came to assembling his crew: “I like working with nice people.”
Most of the members had previously collaborated with Waititi. For instance, costume designer Mayes C. Rubeo, who recently made the Costume Designers Guild Assn. shortlist for her work on the film, also joined Waititi on “Thor: Ragnarok.” “She has such style and class,” says the director. “And she’s got a great eye.” Waititi says Rubeo traveled Europe to acquire the vintage textiles that brought the film’s costumes together. “She would haggle,” he jokes.

The influential Ace Eddie Awards nominees for editing include the prestige dramas “Ford v Ferrari, ” “The Irishman,” “Joker,” “Marriage Story,” and “Parasite,” Left out was Sam Mendes’ late-breaking bold, single-cut “1917” from Oscar-winner Lee Smith (“Dunkirk”), which does not bode well for an Academy Award nomination. Best Picture contender “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” made the cut as a comedy nominee along with “Dolemite Is My Name,” “The Farewell,” “Jojo Rabbit,” and “Knives Out.”
This makes for a competitive Oscar race, with three-time Academy Award-winner Thelma Schoonmaker as the frontrunner for “The Irishman,” Martin Scorsese’s deeply personal, character-driven, non-linear ode to mob life, complicated by Ilm’s experimental VFX de-aging of Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci. “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Quentin Tarantino’s complex love letter to Tinseltown, should earn a nomination for Fred Raskin; Todd Phillips’ bending of reality and fantasy around...

The American Cinema Editors nominations for the Eddie Awards announced on Wednesday (December 11) include our Oscar frontrunner for Best Film Editing, “The Irishman,” along with three of the other four films we’re predicting to reap bids in that race: “Ford v Ferrari,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Parasite.” While the WWI epic “1917,” which is made to look like one continuous shot, was snubbed by the guild we expect it to be the fifth Academy Awards contender.
The Ace Eddie Awards divide their prizes for editing between dramas and comedies/musicals. “Ford v Ferrari,” “The Irishman” and “Parasite” contend here in the drama race, which is rounded out by “Joker” and “Marriage Story.” Facing off against “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” on the comedy side are “Dolemite is My Name,” “The Farewell,” “Jojo Rabbit” and “Knives Out.”

On the television side, the spy thriller “Killing Eve” scored Ace nominations for Dan Crinnion for the “Desperate Times” episode and the “Smell Ya Later” episode for Al Morrow.
Winners will be revealed during Ace’s annual black-tie awards ceremony on Jan. 17 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and will be presided over by Ace president Stephen Rivkin.

“Ford v Ferrari,” “The Irishman,” “Joker,” “Marriage Story” and “Parasite” have been nominated in the dramatic-film category at the American Cinema Editors’ Ace Eddie Awards, which honor the best in film editing.
In the comedy category, the nominees were “Dolemite Is My Name,” “The Farewell,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Knives Out” and “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood.”
The most notable omission was “1917,” which contains dozens of cuts but was designed to look as if it was filmed in one continuous, unbroken shot.

In recent years, more than 90 percent of the Oscar nominees in the Best Film Editing category have first been recognized by the American Cinema Editors. The majority of Oscar nominees have come from the Ace Eddie dramatic category – though for the last two years, the Academy has taken three nominees from the Ace Eddies’ comedy category and only two from the drama category.

This season’s top three editing contenders, “The Irishman,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” and “Joker,” offer complex and confounding narratives. They challenge conventions of reality, fantasy, history, and memory, which definitely enrich their stories about stardom, violence, love, and death.
Martin Scorsese’s go-to editor, Thelma Schoonmaker, aims for her fourth Oscar win with the gangster epic, “The Irishman.” It’s the director’s summary statement about “loyalty, love, trust, and ultimately betrayal.” Robert De Niro’s elderly mob hitman, Frank Sheeran, looks back on his violent life and divided loyalties between cunning Philly crime boss Russell Bufalino (Joe Pesci) and hot-headed Teamsters leader Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino). The narrative contains a dense, zigzagging structure, complicated by Industrial Light & Magic’s innovative VFX de-aging of the three actors. This meant that Schoonmaker’s editing was made more difficult by the quality of the facial animation. Scorsese would carefully...
