I keep thinking to myself after each new episode of Serial that next week will be the week they decide to zoom out completely (à la Koenig’s first-episode metaphor) and give us something resembling a bird’s-eye view of the entire story. Episode five is as close as we’ve yet gotten to that actually happening. Sure, there are still granular details, like the size of a Portland, Oregon, police station and the drab cubicles of a military office in Tampa; but if anything can be gleaned from Serial about how to construct a compelling narrative, it’s that the shift between particulars and context propels the story forward. And that’s especially true in an episode like this, where the story itself is stasis, bureaucratic lethargy, and, ultimately, non-action.The episode begins with Kim Harrison, a family friend of Bergdahl’s who he put down on Army paperwork...

Every year, I kvetch about Comic-Con. And every year, I kind of want to go. I mean, not go to the Comic-Con that will actually take place. I want to go to the Comic-Con of 1993, when I was an important part of a major publishing company and everyone kissed my ass and I could get a table at the restaurant of my choice at the time of my choosing.
I would also like a unicorn, but that’s another column.
Anyway, this year, what I mostly regret is the opportunity to meet my future husband, Chris Hardwick, who is podcasting his program from San Diego all week. Not only would I enjoy meeting him,...

Another day, another schedule for the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con. Next up is Day 3 - Saturday, July 14th - which is just about as chock-full of events for the horror crowd as Friday the 13th!
As always, our focus is the horror panels, but included are a few others that we think will be of interest as well. Remember that times and participants are subject to change so keep your eyes on the official Sdcc site for updates. And hopefully they'll provide a fix soon for the Sdcc smartphone app - in years past it's been extremely helpful.

For anyone who hasn’t discovered Kim Harrison or her Hollows series of novels, you are missing out. The novels detail the misadventures of Rachel Morgan, a witch who works as a runner (private investigator) in Cincinnati. In this alternate universe, “Inderlanders” (witches, vampires, werewolves, etc.) have lived among us unnoticed until the mid-twentieth century, when the T4 Angel virus attached itself to a flaw in genetically manipulated tomatoes, killing a quarter of the human population – an event known as “The Turn”. Biogenetic engineering was outlawed, and humans developed a fear of tomatoes. Inderlanders, immune to the virus, were brought out in the open, and live a sometimes uneasy existence alongside humans.
To help keep law and order, there are two law enforcement agencies that deal with problems involving the two groups: The I.S. (Inderland Security) and the human run Fib. In the first novel – Dead Witch Walking – Rachel quits the I.

"Shut up Dr. Phil"
[Spoilers]
Though a fleeting stranger with the likes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, even I had to admire Supernatural's vigour in this episode. Reuniting two of Joss Whedon's greatest protégés, James Marsters and Charisma Carpenter - Buffy's (and Angel's) Spike and Cordelia Chase respectively - Supernatural effectively tipped its hat to Whedon's expertise, whilst providing an encapsulating plot worthy of the man himself.
Shut up Dr. Phil sees Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam (Jared Padalecki) heading to Prosperity, Indiana, following the mysterious deaths of two of its inhabitants. However, Dean's unusual behaviour - even for him - has Sam spooked, and he confronts his brother in true Winchester fashion:
