Welcome to PeekTV, your daily look at the best that television has to offer. In each installment, we make three picks for the best shows to watch and…toss in a little extra.
Wednesday, May 17 What Happened Last Night?!
(To see what this intrepid TV news crew might be staring at, check out last night’s TV picks.)
“I Am Heath Ledger”
Spike, 10:00 p.m.
Synopsis: Heath Ledger was one of his generation’s brightest young actors. An immense and generous talent who burst upon the Hollywood scene, he quickly rose to the heights of fame before his tragic death.
Why You Should Watch: It’s hard to believe that it’s already been ten years since Ledger’s passing. Judging by David Ehrlich’s review of the film out of Tribeca last month, this doc’s greatest value is in paying tribute to the artist as a young man.

Jughead discovered Archie's secret affair with Ms. Grundy, Veronica tried to make amends to Betty, and Cheryl cracked under the pressure of her grief at the Riverdale High pep rally on Riverdale Season 1 Episode 2.
Below, TV Fanatics Mandy Treccia, Paul Dailly, and Justin Carreiro debate what Archie should do next with his information about July 4th, Reggie and his attitude, and the music of Josie and the Pussycats.
We got to see more of Jughead this episode. What did you think of the character?
Mandy: I like him a lot. I'm partial to the smart, observant characters. I like that he called Archie out on his affair. And I really enjoy his voiceovers mixing with his novel.
Paul: He's considerably more interesting than some of the others. I agree with Mandy about the observant part. It's crazy how much the observant characters can figure out without really interacting with anyone else.

Anticipation for 2017’s major festivals is at an all time high, with Coachella‘s lineup serving as the holy grail of the entire season. We’ve already heard some rumors about the alleged headliners, while DJ Khaled inadvertently spilled the beans on his slot at the festival. Now we have another enticing update to ponder with a list that attempts to predict the entire lineup.
A website called TravelGrom has consistently made predictions about Coachella lineups in the past with a high degree of accuracy compared to the average rumor, and they’ve just offered up their projections for 2017. While the information is just conjecture at this point, TravelGrom predicted last year’s lineup with 64% accuracy. If that figure holds true again, over half of the list will wind up on the official lineup.
The alleged lineup includes a diverse array of styles, with representation from Edm, Rock, Rap, Pop and everything in between.

The Avett Brothers stopped by The Tonight Show for a rootsy performance of new song "Satan Pulls the String." The band released their ninth album, True Sadness, last Friday.
Scott and Seth Avett passionately delivered the bluegrass track with their full band. The performance wrapped with a quick banjo, fiddle and guitar jam session at the end.
The Avett Brothers will be touring in support of their Rick Rubin-produced album this summer, with dates across North America scheduled through October. In February, they'll play several nights at the Hard Rock Hotel in Riviera Maya,...

The Seattle indie rock group Band of Horses’ fifth studio album Why Are You Ok arrives after a four-year hiatus. The record largely combines two very intuitive for this band but vastly different sounds: the ambient nostalgia conveyed through wistful vocals and guitar licks on one hand and on the other the cheery country-rock vibes. ‘Why Are You […]

I know this may not be really a geek thing, but I’m really into biking, and I love the indie rock band Band of Horses. This video combines those into an incredibly insane collection of parkour-style bike stunts featuring Danny MacAskill. This guy seriously pulls off some jaw-dropping moves. I can’t believe what this guy is capable of.
Filmed over the period of a few months in and around Edinburgh by Dave Sowerby, this video of Inspired Bicycles team rider Danny MacAskill features probably the best collection of street/street trials riding ever seen. There's some huge riding, but also some of the most technically difficult and imaginative lines you will ever see. Without a doubt, this video pushes the envelope of what is perceived as possible on a trials bike.

Despite rumors to the contrary, Neil and Pegi Young's annual Bridge School Benefit show is going forward, although much of the biggest names on the bill are looking back to the '90s. Pearl Jam and Soundgarden are among the biggest names slated to play semi-acoustic sets along with Neil Young at the Northern California charity gig this fall. Other acts on the bill will include Florence and the Machine, Tom Jones, Norah Jones, Band of Horses and some "special guests." Pegi Young will also play with her band The Survivors. With the recent news that the Youngs had filed for divorce after some 30 years of marriage, some fans were speculating that the show would be cancelled, but, fortunately, the show is going on. Now in its 28th year, the benefit has previously hosted such names as Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Radiohead's Thom Yorke, Simon & Garfunkel, David Bowie, Metallica,...

Frequent listeners of the Sound On Sight podcast would have heard me discuss my day job working with kids. For the unfamiliar, I am the director of a community center, and the coordinator of a summer camp here in Montreal. At the start of the summer, I was talking to my kids about music and I discovered that none of them knew what a mix tape was, much less an audio cassette – so, I decided it would be a good idea to make them some complications. Of course, I’m not recording these on actual cassettes, but nevertheless, they get the idea. As it turns out, the kids love it, and now that the storyline in Guardians of the Galaxy revolves around a mix tape, they keep asking me to make more. Here’s the most recent compilation I’ve produced following Making Time. This one is simply titled, Awesome Mix Tape Vol.

Don't know much about this American pop-rock quartet, but I'm sucker for a nice clean guitar hook and tight pop song structure. Apparently their lead vocalist Chris Anderson now makes Boston his home, moving from the band's homebase in Fort Collins, Colorado, but I couldn't tell if you if that will be an issue moving forward, Check out two stellar tracks from their forthcoming September release Living Asleep. Suffice it to say, if your into Band of Horses, The Shins, or Arcade Fire, Fierce Bad Rabbit will most certainly appeal to you.

It may have gotten lost in all the meeting-the-mother mythology, catchphrases, slaps and recurring gags, but How I Met Your Mother was an incredibly musically-minded sitcom. Look no farther than its stupidly catchy theme song, a 12-second excerpt of "Hey Beautiful," written and performed by the Solids a.k.a. the band of Himym creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas. Not only did the show feature a bevy of pop stars — Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Katy Perry, Enrique Iglesias, to name a few — the show had some truly catchy original tunes,...

"Every song we’re going to add somebody until there’s like 30 people up here," quietly joked Ben Bridwell. The lead singer of Band of Horses had taken the stage at the Cathedral Sanctuary at the cavernous Immanuel Presbyterian on Wednesday night and started playing "St. Augustine" on acoustic guitar as if it were a practice session. With a new instrument added during each of the first five songs, eventually the space was filled with the recognizable sound of the band. The Sanctuary -- which played host to multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bird in December -- has acoustics built to accommodate soaring jams, organ-driven

Greek yogurt is everywhere you look these days, and Dannon has rounded up the cast of Full House to push the company's own strained milk product, Oikos, during this year's Super Bowl. "Oikos" means "house" in ancient Greek, so tapping Danny Tanner, Joey Gladstone and Uncle Jesse for the spot isn't totally ridiculous – though the same can't be said for the red footy pajamas that Dave Coulier sports in this teaser clip.

Band Of Horses frontman Ben Bridwell is taking a short break from his main band this November to tour the South under the name Birdsmell, because that's the kind of band name you can have if you're already pretty sure people will pay to come see you anyway. Damn, playing a Gibson Sg never looked or sounded so sexy! Before the press folks dropped her new album on me, I didn't know of this compelling singer-songwriter formerly with the North Carolina outfit The Biscuit Burners. This is my pick hit from her new effort. Collaborating with bassist Bill Reynolds of Band of Horses has given her a chiming folk-rock vibe on her third solo effort. And tours with the Tedeschi Trucks Band and Chris Isaak certainly helped inform her "new" sound.

I don’t want to bring it up. I really don’t, but I’ll get it out of the way very quickly, as if I’m ripping off a band-aid, getting my eyebrows waxed, or having my heart ripped out in one swift motion: The Red Wedding. There, I said it! Don’t worry, I’m not going to spill anything of major importance here. But can we at least talk about “The Rains of Castamere”? Man, is that a song. I’m talking an eerily foreboding, spine-tingling, tear- and fear-inducing piece of music.

As if trying to prove his own diversity, and your own inability to pin him down, Evan Andree has released another Ep that takes him in an altogether different direction yet again. Whether it was intentional or not, Evan seems to be proving himself quite the talented chameleon. Now these aren’t drastic switch arounds; like, I don’t know, going from being a roots blues act to a dubstep infused death metal band, or rap to purest soulful folk – but they are considerable shifts that show a depth of talent at Andree’s fingertips.
Now, I reviewed his two previous releases this year, Here and Here, and as stated prolifically proving a point, he’s back again with some new songs and a new sound. For those unfamiliar with those EPs, the first sported a very prominent pop-centric indie with the subtlest hints of Passion Pit,...

Spring has arrived -- flowers and music in full bloom. Some of it only hints at what might be as summer approaches. Until then, here are few things I'm carting around in my wheelbarrow. Dig it.
"Spiderlegs" Danny Malone: Balloons (Dm)
Happy accident as I had no prior knowledge of Mr. Malone prior to listening to his new album, but no worries. Here's a wonderful folk-rock tune from this Austin-based singer/songwriter's second long-player. He recorded this set of confessional musings in a haunted 15th century castle in Denmark, each song in a different room. He calls his music "sexy, dirty, sad songs about the human condition." This remains my favorite track; and the video below is pretty bloody "sexy" too.

Nashville, Tenn. — Sam Beam of Iron & Wine makes music for people who listen with headphones.
Sure, you could check out his music on a computer or pop his CD into your car stereo. But you'd be missing so much.

Beam has achieved an extra level of interest in his music by creating dense sound collages that dance and move like fabric in the wind, yet remain true to the wandering spirit he unveiled while using an acoustic guitar and a four-track recorder to learn the craft.

Nashville, Tenn. — A few weeks before taking off on Band of Horses' current tour, frontman Ben Bridwell decided to make a pilgrimage of sorts to his old haunt Seattle to meet with old friends, stop by familiar landmarks and dodge umbrellas as he "walked in the ghost of my own footsteps."
The 34-year-old singer-guitarist thought the trip might spur a songwriting rush. Instead, he came away with a lot of unexpected emotions as he revisited memories of homelessness and the early days of his band.
"You know, it's funny," Bridwell said by phone. "I get here and I'm staying at this fancy hotel and it's two blocks away from this parking lot, now a vacant parking lot, that they used to have Ryder trucks on – a rental place. And I used to actually sleep on those trucks. I'd get thrown out of the truck at 6 a.m. in my sleeping bag.

Nashville, Tenn. — Macklemore isn't afraid to tell you he was scared when he saw some of the destinations for his upcoming tour.
Idaho. Montana. Texas.
None of those places in the Heartland seemed like they'd be receptive to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' left-leaning, socially conscious message. A hostile reception seemed more likely – especially for the lightning-rod song "Same Love," which offers support for the gay community.
To the 29-year-old rapper's surprise, he found the crowds singing the chorus right back at him.
"Those were three places where people probably sang the loudest and it gives me some hope in the power of music and what music can do," said the Mc, whose given name is Ben Haggerty. "To hear people's testimonials about `Same Love' changing the way that they feel about gay people or the language that they use in their everyday life, making them consider changing that language, or...

Once upon a time, a long, long time ago, independent movies used to curate interesting and savvy soundtracks featuring independent, lesser-known artists. Big budget films used to feature fairly predictable top 40 bands, but everyone was still pretty much happy. Then along came the mp3 industry crash of the early aughts, and struggling musicians learned that licensing their music to soundtracks was often lucrative; especially when they weren't small indie films with no budget. High and low disappeared, with everyone struggling to get a piece of the pie. Hence, the "Twilight" saga soon picked up songs from "cool" bands like Radiohead, Beck, Vampire Weekend, Iron & Wine, Thom Yorke, Muse, Metric, The Black Keys, Band of Horses, Death Cab for Cutie, Bon Iver and St. Vincent, etc. In short, there's really no sense in complaining that good bands often give their music to lame movies that are often antithetical to the spirit of what.
