The made-for-tv Pedro makes its way to DVD this week, boasting a script by Milk Oscar-winner Dustin Lance Black. It could be argued that both films slightly suffer from the impossibility of finding an actor to be as charismatic as the real-life person depicted—especially when that person has been extensively captured on film in real life—but Alex Loynaz takes a valiant stab at portraying Pedro Zamora, the AIDS activist whose stint on MTV's The Real World made him one of pop culture's most visible gay men. The film definitely benefits from producers Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland (Quinceañera...

Fifteen years after his death, the network that brought the voice of openly gay Cuban-American AIDS educator Pedro Zamora to the world is once again celebrating his work and legacy. On April 1st MTV and several of its affiliates (including Logo, the parent company of AfterElton.com) will be broadcasting Pedro, a biopic of the beloved reality star.
And while the film may lack the polish, star power or distinct narrative voice of Oscar-winning brother-in-arms Milk, Pedro pays earnest tribute to a man who shattered preconceptions about gay people and people living with AIDS in millions of homes in America and beyond.
Much like Milk (both scripts come from Academy Award-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black), Pedro introduces us to its subject near the end of his life, in a moment of reflection. It is 1994, and Zamora (played by relative newcomer Alex Loynaz), at the height of his Real World fame,...

Miami resident Alex Loynaz plays the Miami-born title character, who was made famous when he was cast on MTV's "The Real World: San Francisco." After his appearance on the show, Zamora dedicated himself to raising awareness and educating people about the disease, including testifying in front of Congress for more educational programs aimed at youth. Pedro, a biopic about openly gay HIV activist Pedro Zamora and the impact he had on the entire nation by appearing on MTV's The Real World, has been acquired by Wolfe Video for a DVD release this June, according to indieWIRE.com. Alex Loynaz stars as the Cuban-born Zamora, who shared with MTV viewers his struggles with AIDS, his wedding to his partner Sean and, eventually, his death. Justina Machado (Six Feet Under) plays Pedro's sister Milly.

Pedro Zamora, Alex Loynaz
The inspiring and heartbreaking life of Pedro Zamora has made it to the big screen in a new bio-pic, with help from a few out Hollywood big-wigs.
Pedro (who's certain to rank high on our Favorite Gay Reality Stars poll, which closes tomorrow!) learned he was HIV-Positive at age seventeen, and spent the rest of his life trying to educate young people about the disease. His appearance on MTV's The Real World: San Francisco in 1994 was groundbreaking, and when he died the day after the final episode aired, it was a shock to all of us who had become enamored of his sweet smile and gentle personality.
Pedro stars newcomer Alex Loynaz in the title role, and focuses on his Cuban family, his relationship with partner Sean, and his close friendship with Real World housemates Judd and Pam.

Oddly enough Dominic Murphy's White Lightnin' will be playing although it's having it's premier at Sundance. Another film we reported on, Uli Lommel's Absolute Evil starring David Carradine will also be playing, and I'm still wondering how the hell they got that in there.
You can check out the list of all 21 titles after the break.
