Created by writer/director Aaron B. Koontz and writer Cameron Burns, the horror-comedy Scare Package was released on AMC Networks’ horror streaming platform Shudder in the summer of 2020. Scare Package is an anthology film that tells a series of blood-splattered, satirical horror stories from various directors, which are being recounted by Chad Buckley (Jeremy King), the owner of a video rental store called Rad Chad’s Horror Emporium. This year, Koontz and Burns have assembled a new team of directors for a sequel to Scare Package, the horror-comedy anthology Scare Package II: Rad Chad’s Revenge, which features the return of Chad Buckley, a character who feels like a combination of Joe Bob Briggs and Randy Meeks.
In addition to the impressively over the top practical effects, part of what makes Scare Package and Scare Package II: Rad Chad’s Revenge so much fun are the ways in which the anthologies parody common horror tropes,...

This week is not only the first week of winter, officially beginning on December 21st, but the week is also capped off by Christmas Day on Sunday, December 25th. As you might imagine, it’s not exactly going to be a big week for new movie releases, with James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water likely dominating any and all movie conversations these next several days.
And don’t forget that Tommy Wirkola’s Christmas genre movie Violent Night is also still playing in theaters through Christmas, the film thus far slaying its way to 55 million worldwide!
What about New genre movies for the week, you ask? Well, there are only four new ones remaining for the entire rest of the year, so let’s take a look at those in one fell swoop.
Here’s all the new horror arriving December 19 – December 31, 2022!

"You can't kill pure evil." Shudder has revealed an official trailer for the fun horror anthology feature Scare Package II: Rad Chad's Revenge, a sequel to first Scare Package series that opened in 2020. This next one is set to start streaming on Shudder later in December. When horror guru Rad Chad Buckley's funeral turns into an elaborate series of hilarious death traps based on his favorite scary films, the guests must band together and use the rules of horror to survive the bloody game. The full cast includes Jeremy King, Zoe Graham, Rich Sommer, Kelli Maroney, Shakira Ja'nai Paye, Graham Skipper, Maria Olsen, and Byron Brown. This looks much funnier than it does scary, though there's ton of crazy gore and blood to be disgusted by anyway. And if you haven't seen the original, maybe it's time for a double feature to enjoy both. ›››

India Walton estimates there are at least 50 people walking around Buffalo with her art on their body.
Yes, the winner of last month’s Democratic primary for mayor of New York’s second-largest city was, for about six months, a tattoo artist. It was only one of several stops Walton made en route to her presumptive new role as America’s first socialist mayor in over 60 years. She’s also taken turns as a nurse, a union representative, an executive director of a nonprofit, and other more “wacky” titles, as she describes them.

New York’s second largest city, Buffalo, is poised to make history this fall by electing its first female mayor — and the first socialist mayor of a major American city in more than 60 years. On Tuesday, 38-year-old India Walton defeated four-term incumbent Mayor Byron Brown in the Democratic primary. Walton was leading Brown by more than 1,500 votes, or roughly 7 percentage points, when the AP called the race on Wednesday morning.
As the returns streamed in on election night, Walton was jubilant. Asked about her political philosophy and whether she really considered herself a socialist,...

"We told you, and you did not listen, and now it's officially too late!" Gravitas Ventures has unveiled a trailer for an indie absurdist comedy titled I've Got Issues, from filmmaker Steve Collins. This premiered at the Austin Film Festival last year, and also at the Virginia Film Festival. It's a comedy about despair and what to do with it - in a series of intertwining stories. Collins explains that "it really feels like an apocalypse. I decided, as therapy for myself, to make a film about my tenderhearted characters joining together and choosing light over darkness. I'm trying to take these small stories of people being taken advantage of, heartbroken, beaten down, and link them to the larger picture of suffering across history, to see pain is part of the process in our renewal." The film's cast features Macon Blair, Claire Titelman, Maria Thayer, John Merriman, Byron Brown, and Jim Gaffigan.

Great Point Capital Management, the UK-based, media-focused investment fund run by Robert Halmi and Fehmi Zeko, plans to build a $50 million-plus film and television studio complex in Buffalo, NY.
The firm earlier this year signed a deal with Rich Holdings to buy a site where two 20,000-square-foot stages and another 70,000 square feet of office and support space will be built. The studio will be built in two phases, with construction on Phase 1 slated to start in September with projected completion in the fall of 2021.
Buffalo Studios is the third production backed by Great Point to enter the pipeline, all of them in New York state. Construction on its Lionsgate Studios in Yonkers and Hudson Studios in Tarrytown has resumed after a three-month hiatus due to Covid-19.

Other than knowing that Keith & Heath features the two titular puppets, I went into writer-director Andy Young's (The Crime of the Century) eight-minute short film with absolutely no idea what to expect. And, I gotta say, I was pretty blown away! The Keith and Heath puppets have a familiar Sesame Street-like air about them, with a craftfully-rendered design (Puppet Designers: Laura Dávila, Victoria Prescott & Laura Stephens) that is more nostalgic than mere copycatting. The voicing (Jon Cozart), puppeteering (Jennifer Bateman & Christian Haigis) and production design (Emily Haueisen) are so spot-on perfect, that it is difficult to believe that this is not a Sesame Workshop or The Jim Henson Company production. On top of all that, there is a bevy of Austin-based talent that appears as the puppets' human counterparts -- such as Sam Eidson, Byron Brown, Katie Folger and Tony Vespe. Unlike some of the actors who have...

Grow Up, Tony Phillips, the new comedy from Emily Hagins, made its world premiere at SXSW last week, in the Vimeo Theater of the Austin Convention Center. The audience was eager and excited to see the latest project by this young Austin-based director.
Tony Phillips (Hagins film regular Tony Vespe) is an easygoing senior in high school who still dresses up for Halloween and loves trick-or-treating. He spends his fall months thinking up costume ideas, even sketching concepts in his college prep class. He tells his mom that he sees these costumes as his "legacy."
His two closest pals are cool kid Craig (Devin Bonnee, another Hagins regular) and Elle (Katie Folger, also in Zero Charisma); both attempt to get Tony to get past this fascination with October 31. In one discussion with Tony, Elle comments, "You don't really worry about anything, do you?" They have their own reasons for worrying about Tony.

The promoters of Austin's legendary South By Southwest Festival , which kicks off on March 8, have announced the massive lineup of film for 2013 (69 world premieres, 14 North American and 5 U.S. Premieres so far), which includes the world premiere of Evil Dead, the much-talked-about reboot of the Sam Raimi classic from director Fede Alvarez. That's the big news, of course, but the lineup also includes a wealth of horror, thriller, dark fantasy and other genre-related titles. Here's a few of those additional highlights: Milo Director/Screenwriter: Jacob Vaughan, Screenwriter: Benjamin Hayes A man discovers that his chronic stomach problems are due to the fact that he has a demon baby living in his colon. Starring Ken Marino, Gillian Jacobs, Peter Stormare, Stephen Root and Mary Kay Place. (World Premiere) Much Ado About Nothing Director: Joss Whedon Shakespeare's classic comedy is given a contemporary spin in Joss Whedon's film, Much Ado About Nothing.

In the classic underground movie book Visionary Film, historian P. Adams Sitney coined the term “trance film” to describe the primary type of post-wwii avant-garde cinema that was in vogue at the time. In Sitney’s view, short movies such as Maya Deren‘s Meshes of the Afternoon, Kenneth Anger‘s Fireworks and Stan Brakhage‘s Flesh of Morning all feature somnambulist protagonists wandering through surrealist nightmare worlds of their own psyche.
Movies featuring sleepwalking main characters are, of course, the antithesis of popular mainstream entertainment, which at all times attempts to thrill the masses with tales of heroes of extraordinary abilities doing amazing things.
Flash forward about 70 years and Don Swaynos‘ debut feature film, the surrealist comedy Pictures of Superheroes, doesn’t quite fit Sitney’s “trance” mold, but it’s main character, professional cleaning woman Marie (Kerri Lendo), does appear to be sleepwalking through her life. The film...

You might have noticed a sad lack of reviews here recently from our contributor J.C. De Leon. That's because he's busy working as an associate producer on the movie Grow Up, Tony Phillips, the latest feature from Austin filmmaker Emily Hagins (My Sucky Teen Romance). The film shoot started Monday and is keeping J.C. pretty busy.
You too can be a part of this movie if you like ... onscreen as an extra. J.C. tells me that Grow Up, Tony Phillips will be filming the Friday/weekend after Thanksgiving at Eastside Memorial High School (1012 Arthur Stiles Road, not far from 183/Airport). They need young-ish extras who can portray teenagers realistically, and older extras who can portray teachers and chaperones, for scenes set at a high-school dance.
If you're interested in being an extra, contact J.C. at jc [at] arcanumpictures [dot] com and he'll give you the details. I wish...

Much like Austin music, the local comedy scene has seen its ups and downs through the last couple of decades. Lately Austin comedians have received more recognition not just on stage but onscreen. Sometimes the writing and delivery of stand-up doesn't translate well to the silver screen. However, this year Austin Film Festival features Pictures of Superheroes, a local movie that not only showcases great comedic talent but congeals their multiple personalities in a humorous and insightful tale written and directed by Don Swaynos.
Pictures of Superheroes drops viewers into the humdrum life of maid-for-hire Marie played by Kerri Lendo (Sleep Study) as she deals with her insensitive boyfriend Phil (Byron Brown) and even sleazier boss Gil (Chris Doubek) who runs the French Maid "Cleaning" Service, which fronts as a prostitution store. After being fired from her job and breaking up with Phil, Marie is hired off the street by...

The Dallas International Film Festival has announced 15 of the films in its 2012 lineup, and not only does Texas make a great showing, but Austin is well represented. I'm hoping to attend the festival this year, the selections look so good so far. Some notable non-Texas films include Lawrence Kasdan's Darling Companion, which has former Austinite Mark Duplass in the cast; The Brooklyn Brothers Beat the Best, the directorial debut of actor Ryan O'Nan (The Dry Land), and Takashi Shimizu's Tormented.
Cinema Six, the latest feature from filmmakers Mark Potts and Cole Selix (S&M Lawn Care), will have its world premiere at the festival, which takes place from April 12-22 (corrected from original text). Jenn and I visited the set in Lockhart last year (when the movie was called A Splice of Life). The filmmakers aren't from Austin, but many of their cast and crew are: producer Kelly Williams,...

Yogi Bear is a live-action/animated hybrid that follows very closely in the tradition of the well-established sub-genre of Warner Brothers cartoons. Not without spunk and moments of wit, Yogi lacks the edge in a bid to be faithful to pre-established conventions. It’s fitting a Road Runner cartoon appears before the feature.
Dan Aykroyd voices the precious pick-a-nic basket stealing bear, with Justin Timberlake as his sidekick Boo Boo. In a bit of type-casting, Tom Cavanaugh again plays Ranger Smith, a nice man who has trouble talking to women. Smith’s relationship with Yogi is, interestingly enough, quite respectful: he’s a pleasant annoyance to Jellystone Park.
Cavanagh is probably a very nice guy in real life, he’s been playing this same role since he came on my radar with the extremely likeable NBC series Ed years ago. Perhaps he should take a role as a rapist or...
