It’s that time of year for various organizations to recognize some of the best films of 2011. Some of these awards are lesser known, but the Film Independent Spirit Awards, is not one of them. Film Independent which also helps produce the Los Angeles Film Festival has announced the 2012 Spirit Award Nominees.

Scenic Route will be directed by Kevin Goetz and Michael Goetz from the screenplay by The Beaver writer Kyle Killen. The indie drama follows two old college friends who are stranded in the desert and start to emotionally and physically clash as they come to realize that they may not be rescued. Anonymous Content produces Scenic Route along with Best Medicine Productions' Paul Jensen and Brion Hambel. Killen is the creator and executive producer of Fox's Lone Star and is currently writing Awake which NBC has ordered for midseason, reports Variety. The concept of the The Beaver may have been intriguing, however having a struggling Mel Gibson on board as the lead, drowned the film at the box office with a paltry $970,000 from a $21 million budget.
