Context is something that's probably needed before stepping into Nobuo Mizuta's “We're Millennials. Got a Problem? International” for two reasons. Firstly, it is the spin-off film of the comedy-drama television series of the same name which first aired in 2016. This would explain some of the backstory and in-jokes established form the start, alluded to in numerous meta flashback moments. Secondly, the ‘yutori' generation to which the Japanese title (“Yutori desu ga nani ka”) refers to those born between 1987 and 1996, when educational reforms intended to reduce the burden on students, allowing for greater creativity. This is, therefore, a generation with the stigma of being afforded some more breaks that those before them. So, a little more than just millennials in age.

A Japanese-language remake of British drama “Still Life” could be the first film to flow from a fund created to support Chinese-Japanese joint productions.
The fund is operated by WeF Cultural Investment Media, a company founded earlier this year with the backing of government bodies in Beijing and Qingdao — the Chinese coastal city which boasts vast studios built by Wanda and now owned by Sunac.
Unveiled on the first day of the Tiffcom rights market, an adjunct to next week’s Tokyo International Film Festival, the WeFmedia fund is looking to back two films from long-standing production company Sedic International, according to WeFmedia executive Watanabe Masashiro.
The fund is intended to take advantage of and facilitate use of the China-Japan film co-production treaty that was signed last year. Masahiro listed factors including significant differences in production system, scale of market, and size of budget as obstacles that hinder...

Tiffcom’s China Day comprised a series of seminars and a networking event and follows the signing of a China-Japan co-production agreement last year.
Japan’s Sedic International is in talks to remake Uberto Pasolini’s Still Life as a Sino-Japan collaboration, one of many projects currently being discussed between Japan and China as the two Asian powers explore ways of working together.
The remake was flagged up during Tiffcom’s China Day, which comprised a series of seminars, presentations and a networking event, and follows the signing of an official co-production agreement between China and Japan in May 2018.

The difference between saying "I'm sorry" and an apology is the unlikely source of comedy (and some well-earned sentiment) in Nobuo Mizuta's madcap The Apology King. A collection of oddball vignettes prove that even the most fraught of international incidents just need a little helping of empathy and understanding to bring peace between strangers. Structured in a series of cases, The Apology King sees Tokyo Apology Center director (and seemingly its sole employee) Mr. Kurojima (Sado Abe, Kamizaze Girls, Yatterman) offering his apology services to his Japanese clients who've found themselves, for whatever reason, unable to make amends.* As a master of the doreza - the formal, forehead to the ground bow apology - Kuroshima promises the ultimate apology (for a modest fee). Whether it's...

The Fantasia Film Festival is taking place from July 18th to August 6th in Montreal and will feature over 100 films from around the world. We gave you a look at the initial lineup last month and now have an additional list of Fantasia 2013 films that will be screening, including Curse of Chucky, You’re Next, and Frankenstein’s Army:
Horror Is Child’S Play – Don Mancini’S Curse Of Chucky (World Premiere)
A rarity among genre franchises, the Child’S Play series (begun in 1988) has retained the sure-handed guidance of original screenwriter/creator Don Mancini throughout killer doll Chucky’s decades’-long reign of horror. Mancini, who will be hosting our “scar-studded” world premiere, graduated to the director’s chair with 2004’s Seed Of Chucky, after having co-written or written every entry in the series. His longevity with the project is, of course, matched by the fiendish voiceover work by...

Inspired by a real-life rescue event that occurred following the Chuetsu earthquake of 2004 - and named after the Tokyo Fire Department code that indicates the discovery of survivors in need of rescue - Nobuo Mizuta’s, Japanese, special effects-laden disaster movie 252: Sign Of Life hits UK DVD next week. The effects look great, but action disaster movies fans take note. Being Japanese, as well as thrills, they’ll probably be a fair dollop of melodrama thrown along in for the ride. 252 goes on sale next week. Synopsis: Giant, baseball-sized hailstones and a devastating tidal wave are merely precursors to the main event, a mega-typhoon that strikes Japan and virtually destroys Tokyo, leaving a handful of survivors trapped in the rapidly flooding and collapsing subway system with their fate of hanging in the balance. Among them is a former Hyper Rescue Squad member, Yuji Shinohara, and his young deaf-mute daughter,...

[Thanks to our friend Josh Hurtado for providing an advance look at the schedule.]
It is July. For me this means gearing up for my annual marathon movie event, the Asian Film Festival of Dallas. The organizers have been tossing hints at titles out via facebook and Twitter, but yesterday they finally let the cats out of the bag.
This year Affd is screening 30+ features as well as their usual shorts programs. I'm pretty sure this may be their biggest festival ever in terms of variety. The schedule looks great, with some really awesome titles and some surprises (which are almost always my favorite part!). Affd has a newly redesigned website that makes it easy to explore the titles, watch trailers, make your own schedule, and learn about the events. Facebook friends and Twitter followers are always the first to know about cool events and news, so be sure to check them out there as well as the official site for all the latest!
