The latest on the sequel to The Zombie Diaries ... As we told you earlier, Kevin Gates and Michael Bartlett's follow is called World of the Dead: The Zombie Diaries 2 . Below, you'll find the American Film Market art and a full synopsis. Three months have passed since a viral outbreak wiped out 99.9% of the world's population, turning its victims into flesh-eating living dead. In the UK, a surviving band of soldiers and civilians have taken refuge at the rural military barracks. Life in this new world is tough and brutal, but hope appears when a high level communication is received from a military base on the coast, telling of sanctuary elsewhere in Europe... But just as salvation appears to be in reach, the base suffers an overwhelming defeat at the hands of the living...

It was officially announced today that Kevin Gates and Michael Bartlett are teaming back up for World Of The Dead: The Zombie Diaries 2 The film is scheduled for release in 2011. No details have been released, but we got our hands on the art inside. The Zombie Diaries took place in the early part of the 21st Century where an unknown virus began spreading among the populous. Within weeks it had engulfed the entire planet, from the smallest rural communities to the greatest cities. Upon the death of its host, the virus would reanimate the corpse until it was no longer able to support itself. Soon, the planet was infested with a new threat - the undead. So begins our journey into the dystopian world of The Zombie Diaries.

Director Michael Bartlett just checked in to let us know that his sequel to the very popular The Zombie Diaries (review here) is well on its way and has a new title and even a new teaser one-sheet! Ready for the goods?
The new film is now being called World of the Dead: The Zombie Diaries 2, and Bartlett is getting set to shoot from a script from long-time collaborator Kevin Gates.
Like Romero's Diary of the Dead, only made before it, The Zombie Diaries was a pretty disturbing flesh-eating opus shot in the style of cinéma-vérité. Plot details on the sequel are for now scarce, but rest assured we'll have an interview with Bartlett soon that should flesh things out for you!
In the interim dig on the artwork below.

It's going to be called World of the Dead: The Zombie Diaries . Kevin Gates will return to co-direct the film with Michael. Disclaimer: These films are in no particular order and aren't all films I like. I wrote this post to be a companion piece to Kurt Halfyard's wonderful Brave New Worldview – 30 Science Fiction Films of the 21st Century posted over at Row Three, so read this and then piece it together with his and we think you'll have a pretty comprehensive list of important genre stuff from the new millennium to catch up with.
Here's the thing; we love the post apocalypse around here. No foolin'. For those of you just tuning in, Quiet Earth started life as a site dedicated to the genre. And while we cover the whole gamut of weird and wonderful genre film from around the globe now, we still like to think of ourselves as the go-to-guys on the subject. From Panic in the Year Zero, to Planet of the Apes, to The Postman, we've seen...

“Diary of the Dead” & “The Zombie Diaries”
Every now and then, some movies spawn a low budget film based on the same concept. More than likely, the movie would be put on the shelf as an under-rated B-movie; But sometimes that under-rated film surpasses the original. Two films that literally coincide with each other would be the two recent zombie movies, “Diary of the Dead” and “The Zombie Diaries”. Each of these movies is more or less the same movie, due to the fact that each movie is shot in a first person view w/ a digital camera. Diary of the Dead was written and directed by the zombie king himself, George A. Romero. The Zombie Diaries was written and directed by English writers Michael Bartlett and Kevin Gates.
Diary of the Dead follows a group of film students who are in the process of creating the next big horror film.

A couple of years ago filmmakers Michael Bartlett and Kevin Gates cut a trailer of their film The Zombie Diaries. Soon after we aired it for them, the offers starting coming in for the duo; and before you knew it, the flick found some serious distro both here in the States and abroad. Well, Michael and Kevin are at it again with The Zombie Diaries 2, and we've got the official word on what's cookin' thus far!
"The film is being co-financed by Weinstein and a UK distributor," Bartlett tells us. "The UK deal is still far from clear due to some sequel options Kevin and I signed with the first film, but once that is resolved, we hope to be able to shoot in the summer."
"Obviously nothing is guaranteed until that is sorted, but if and when it is, I will let Quiet Earth and you guys at Dread Central know first,...

This is news to me, but apparently there's been an effort on director Michael Bartlett's part to do a sequel to the U.S. DVD release The Zombie Diaries (released theatrically in the UK). Bartlett co-helmed the film with Kevin Gates. Bartlett stated, via his Twitter account, today: "Harvey and Bob Weinstein approve the Us deal for The Zombie Diaries 2. Almost there." I presume by saying "almost there," Bartlett means they're trying to lock down funding. The first Diaries was released through the Dimension Extreme label. And it's funny because the similarly themed and executed Diary of the Dead , by George Romero, was acquired by the Weinstein's and released through Dimension, too. However, they didn't get their paws on Romero's follow-up Survival of...

Michael Bartlett and Kevin Gates came to our attention a little while back with The Zombie Diaries, an ultra-low budget affair that nevertheless managed to put a slightly different spin on the material, breathing some fresh life into the tired genre. While The Zombie Diaries certainly shows some of the limitations of its miniscule budget it also made it very clear that Bartlett and Gates were the real thing, very talented directors with a unique spin on genre material that made them very much worth keeping an eye on. And now they’re back.
Due to shoot in 2010, they’re next picture will be a time travel picture titled Timeless and while they’re keeping tight lipped about any specifics - as they should with this sort of material, no point spoiling your own film - they have released the initial key art and allowed the fine lads over at...

Of all the zombie movies to hit in recent memory, few have sparked quite as much praise, criticism, debate or controversy as Michael Bartlett and Kevin Gates' debut effort, The Zombie Diaries. Part faux-documentary, part shorts series, The Zombie Diaries may not have been everyone's cup of tea, but it showed the duo as budding film talents who understood the fundamental principles of how to make something out of nothing. Like a lot of low-budget hits before it, it was high on concept and low on production cost (ie. the documentary aesthetic), but by refusing to scrimp on story or direction, Tzd got noticed fast and was scooped up by Weinstein's Dimension Extreme for American distribution.
Luckily for us, Michael Bartlett has become as much a fan of Qe as we are of his work, so through the years since Tzd we've kept in touch and have hounded him...

It's been a while since we've heard from our good friend Michael Bartlett (The Zombie Diaries), but thankfully he dropped us a line tonight with some teaser artwork and information about his and co-director Kevin Gates' next film, Timeless.
"I can't say too much other than we're in the early stages of development, and it is a film about time travel and redemption," Michael tells us. "Fans of films such as Jacob's Ladder, Children of Men, and The Butterfly Effect will not be disappointed. Although time travel is normally associated with sci-fi, this is more of a human story about atoning for the sins of the past. It is deeply spiritual and philosophical."
Ok, brother. You've got our attention. Look for more on this one soon. For now dig on the artwork below.

We've been sitting on this one for a while now but it's time to give our readers a taste of what's to come. From the directors of The Zombie Diaries (review), our friend Michael Bartlett and Kevin Gates, comes a post apocalyptic time travel film which we've got the script for, and we can tell you, should be incredible. Admittedly we're biased as Michael is one cool cat and we've been in on the project for a while, but as we have the script we can honestly tell you we're greatly looking forward to another film from the Bartlett/Gates duo. Unfortunately we're not allowed to give anything away at this point, but you can see the poster to the right and we'll have an exclusive script review coming soon!

Our boy cyberhal was lucky enough to get an interview with Michael Bartlett (The Zombie Diaries) in while he was visiting La, and while we've been holding off on publishing the interview, we've received some further news. Michael is currently in talks with a number of artists to turn one of the feature films he has in the works, Timeless, into a graphic novel. A post apocalyptic film described as a cross between Sin City and The Butterfly Effect, the central theme of the film is addiction and it is through that we explore time travel in a way never seen before. Michael and Kevin Gates are also working on another film called Forever Darkness which is like a cross between The Mist and Pitch Black. While I can't give you many details it sounds awesomely apocalyptic. As an added bonus, there's a link to a Pa short Bartlett did...

With their first film, The Zombie Diaries (pictured), debuting in the U.S. today on Dimension Extreme DVD, the film’s London-based writers/directors/producers Kevin Gates and Michael Bartlett already have a number of new genre projects lined up. One of them, needless to say, is a follow-up to their vérité undead opus.
“We’ve written a sequel to Zombie Diaries, told in the same style as the first film,” Gates told Fangoria Radio last week. “But we’re waiting to see how the first film does in the States first. We also have Forever Darkness on tap, which can be described as ‘Pitch Black meets The Mist.’ Plus, we’ve written an untitled, very dark time-travel film that’s sort of ‘Leon [a.k.a. The Professional] meets The Butterfly Effect.’ ” Stay tuned for more movie news from the British zombiemeisters, and go here for Fangoria Radio’s comprehensive audio archives.

Again, the Zombie Diaries dvd cover has nothing to do with the film, it seems Dimension Extreme has issues with truth in marketing, but regardless, it's a great film made by our friend Michael Bartlett (who we'll have an interview posted with soon) and Kevin Gates. Next is a documentary on my favorite rap group, Wu-Tang called Wu: The Story of the Wu-Tang Clan which may not be normal Quiet Earth fare but I'm excited to see. Last off is a trifecta of Minoru Kawasaki weirdness: Executive Koala, The Rug Cop, and The World Sinks Except Japan. Check after the break for trailers, amazon links, and the works.

With the impending release of The Zombie Diaries (review here) hitting DVD in a few days, co-directors Michael Bartlett and Kevin Gates are showing no signs of slowing down at all. In fact the duo are working on no less than three new projects including The Zombie Diaries 2.
"We have a couple of ideas for our next film right now," says Bartlett. "The first is called Forever Darkness, and it will basically be a cross between The Mist and Pitch Black. It takes place in a rural community in the present day, and the gist of the film is that something is coming but we don't know what it is that's approaching. Everywhere that it has hit so far we cannot establish communication with. It all shows from the characters' perspective as if you were there.
